  • Various Data Points about Super Bowl Quarterbacks, starting with a repeat:

Patrick Mahomes is looking to join the following QBs who have led their teams in wins in back to back Championship games##, in chronological order:

    Pre-Super Bowl era:

    Sid Luckman  1940-41

    Otto Graham  1946/47/48/49/50  and  1954-55

    Tommy Thompson  1948-49

    Bobby Layne  1952-53

    George Blanda   1960-61

    Bart Starr  1961-62  and

    Jack Kemp  1964-65

    Super Bowl era:

      Starr:    1965/66/67

    Bob Griese  1972-73

    Terry Bradshaw  1974-75  and 1978-79

    Joe Montana  1988-89

    Troy Aikman  1992-93

    John Elway  1997-98

    Tom Brady  2003-04

He must, of course, now beat Brady to join this group

    ##  Arnie Herber led the Green Bay Packers to back to back championships in 1929-30...but no  Title game was played in those years.  In the 1922/23/24 Canton/Cleveland Bulldogs no player specifically identified as a "quarterback".

Highlighted:  eligible players for HOF, but not elected thereto.

  • QBs that started Super Bowls with 2 different teams:

    Brady:   Pats/Bucs

    Peyton:  Colts/Broncos

    Warner:  Rams/Cardinals

    Morton:  Cowboys/Broncos

  • Super Bowl  starting QBs who at some point played for the Cleveland Browns:

    Len Dawson

    Trent Dilfer

    Mark Rypien

  • #1 Overall  Draft Picks who started as QB in a Super Bowl (# see Paul Hornung below)

    Troy Aikman

    Terry Bradshaw

    John Elway

    Eli Manning

    Peyton Manning

    Jim Plunkett

    Jared Goff

    Cam Newton

Steve Young.....taken with equivalent of #1 pick in Supplemental draft.

  • Heisman Trophy winning Quarterbacks who started in the Super Bowl:

Paul Hornung.......was a QB in college, but play halfback in NFL

    Roger Staubach

    Jim Plunkett

    Cam Newton

    and that's it!  So far.

And, as you can see, only  Plunkett and Newton had the Trifecta:   Heisman/#1 pick/started Super Bowl (and ONLY Plunkett won SB)   (though again...Hornung not started as QB)

Repeat:  ONLY   Jim Plunkett   was the QB in history  who:  Won the Heisman.   Was  #1 pick in the Draft.   Won the Super Bowl.

    Joe Flacco

    Russell Wilson

    Aaron Rodgers

    Matt Ryan

    Cam Newton

    Jared Goff

    Jimmy Garropolo

    ##  Drew Brees, not yet officially retired.

  • I don't even want to talk about previous buccaneer QBs who went on to win a Super bowl with a different team..?

    Go Bucs!!! Go Browns!!

Doug Williams, Steve Young, Trent Dilfer ...

That is what I thought of when I read that post.....there are several former Bucs QBs that went to and won SBs.

And hell....they even had the sons of former Super Bowl winning QBs start for them:    Chris Simms,  Brian Griese

But, they do have Brad Johnson whom I would think would be a folk hero in Tampa....but does not seem to be that.   You and Axe are from Tampa area-ish.  What is the status of Brad Johnson there?

  • Just heard this bit of Trivia on PFT:

Only  3 Three teams have won  Super Bowls with 3 different QBs:

    Packers:  Starr,   Favre, Rodgers

Giants:  Simms, Hostetler, Eli  Manning   (also had Kerry Collins start and lose)

Redskins:   Theismann,  Rypien,  Williams.  (also had Billy Kilmer start and lose)

Teams who had 2 starting QBs win:

49ers:   Montana, Young  (also had Colin Kaepernik and Jimmy Garrapolo start and lose)

Raiders:  Plunkett, Stabler  (also had Daryl Lamonica and Rich Gannon start and lose)

Broncos:  Elway,  Peyton  (also had Craig Morton start and lose)

Cowboys:  Staubach, Aikman  (also had Craig Morton start and lose)

    Chiefs:  Dawson, Mahomes

Colts:  Unitas,  Peyton  (also had Earl Morrall start and lose)

    Ravens:  Dilfer,  Flacco

Steelers:  Bradshaw, R-berger  (also had Neil O'Donnell start and lose)

Add:   Buccaneers:   Brad Johnson,  Tom Brady

He's just Brad Johnson. They love Mike Alstott up there. And they love that defense ... Derrick Brooks, John Lynch, etc.

There are not a lot of Bucs fans here in Naples. Mostly Packers, Bears, Vikings, Lions, Browns, Steelers, Patriots ... All of the Midwest and East Coast teams have fan clubs here. The old-timers are Dolphins fans.

So, not much love for ole Brad.

And yea, I figured that Naples was more or less an "open city"  given the transient nature of most of its population.

And, actually, in checking,  I see that Naples is actually almost 50 miles closer to Miami than it is to Tampa.   So now that makes sense that they may lean toward the Dolphins.

  • There have only been  3  Quarterback rematches in NFL history:

    Bradshaw  vs Staubach

    Aikman vs. Kelly

    Eli Manning vs. Brady

The first QB listed won both matchups.

  • The following QBs won  Championships in both pre and post Super Bowl eras:

    Johnny Unitas

    Bart Starr

    Len Dawson

  • OK,  the new Answer to the Trivia Question:   Name those QBs that have won Championships with 2 different teams:

    Tobin Rote

    Peyton Manning

    Tom Brady.
