Head Coaching Longevity One team

The Browns Board
7 3 416
  • Mike Tomlin just signed a  3 year extension.   If he coaches to the end of that extension it will mean he will have coached  18  years with one team.  Very few coaches in history have gone that long with one team:

    George Halas   Bears   40 years

    Tom Landry  Cowboys  29 years

Don  Shula  Dolphins  26 years   (also coached Colts for 7 years)

    Steve Owen  Giants  24 years

    Chuck Noll Steelers  23 years

    Curly Lambeau  Packers  21 years

Bill Belichick  Patriots  21 years and counting  (also coached Browns  5 years)

    Others:

Hank Stram   17 years with Chiefs

Joe Gibbs   16 years with Redskins   (not consecutive)

Paul Brown  17 years with  Browns  (also coached Bengals)

Bill Cowher  15 years with Steelers

Sean Payton  16 years with Saints and counting.

Also note:   John Harbaugh  has coached the Ravens just one year less than Tomlin has been with Steelers.

Only other active coach with  10 or more years with same team is Pete Carroll with Seahawks.

Andy Reid has a total of 22 coaching seasons between the Eagles (14 yrs) and the Chiefs  (8 years)

Also:   Weeb Ewbank,  Mike Shanahan and  Tom Couglin each put in  20 years of coaching with multiple teams.

Weeb Ewbank is still the only one of two coaches to win Championships with 2 different teams.   Guy Chamberlain from like the 20s did  also.

  • Notes:

The Head Coach with the fewest career victories  is Guy Chamberlain  with only  81  wins.   Of course, he coached in the 20s  when fewer games were played,   but, his teams also won  4 championships in that decade.  So that makes him HOF, for sure.

The HC with the most  wins  who is eligible, but is not in the HOF?     Marty Schottenheimer with 200 career victories.

  • If this ownership can keep the same HC, and let him build a structure of smart coaches , and have the players be very capable of dominating the field, and he continues to win, then this Browns team can be back in the headlines as a threat to the teams in our division and across the league. That's how it should be and how it should remain. GO BROWNS !

As of now, I would say that is exactly where they are.   Here are the odds, not that I fully comprehend these numbers:

    AFC North Winner Odds
    Team American Fractional
    Baltimore Ravens +110 11/10
    Cleveland Browns +175 7/4
    Pittsburgh Steelers +350 7/2
    Cincinnati Bengals +2500 25/1
  • If Stefanski is better than Wayne Fontz, he will last 9 full seasons with the Browns.

  • Funny, but think at that for a few moments...lol

Fontz really wasn’t that bad was he? His record is about as good as anyone they have had in 50 years
