Philadelphia vs. Chicago
-
The Stanley Cup Finals in the NHL is set. This year the Philadelphia Flyers will play the Chicago Blackhawks for the titles.
Here is the history in the Finals between teams in these two cities:
1910 MLB The Philadelphia As defeated the Chicago Cubs 4 games to 1 in the WS.
1929 MLB The Philadelphia As defeated the Chicago Cubs again by 4 games to 1 in the WS.
1947 NBA The Philadelphia Warrior defeated the Chicago Stags 4 games to 1 in the BAA (NBA) Finals.
1947 NFL The Chicago Cardinals defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL Championship game
1948 NFL The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Chicago Cardinals in the NFL Championship game.
And that is the last time until now that teams from these two major cities met in the Finals of one of the major sports.
One reason for this is that now, Philadelphia and Chicago cannot meet in the NFL title game or NBA Finals anymore because they are in the same conference. Only in baseball if the White Sox and Phillies played, or in the NHL like now can these cities meet.
One good thing from my standpoint about this matchup is that we will have a team win that has not won in a very long time. The Flyers last won the Stanley Cup in 1975, the Blackhawks in 1961. The NBA does not seem to be as promising. Once again the boring old Lakers and Celtics matchup may be in play. Yawn.

Some Philly v. Chicago matchups I remember:
Mid-Seventies, Cubs versus Phillies, the wind is blowing out at the friendly confines and Mike Scmidt jacks four home runs in a game that was like 22-20.
Late-eighties, Bears versus Eagles, Fog Bowl playoff game ... literaly could not make out shit on the TV coverage.
There were some good matchups when Jordan was with the Bulls and Barkley with the Sixers too.

Hey, I was thinking about doing something like this. You beat me to it. But good job. Though, are you sure it is not a bunch of drunken Italians vs a bunch of drunken Pollacks?

Chicago in 6. I'll be happy for either city - it's been a while for both teams and I hope the ratings are high. I love cinderella stories and Phillie getting into the playoffs on the last day by winning a shoot-out in NY then going to the finals is a big one. But I heard that the team was a disaster in the locker room and it looks like they just happened to find a hot goalie on the bench. Hardly one of those "David beats Goliath" stories.

Since my daughter lives in Philadelphia, I go with the Flyers.

as a flyers fan i honestly didnt expect them to get this far, but i think it will be the closest stanley cup in recent memory, i am pretty confident this will go to a game 7 but i can say who will win, i think it comes down to who wants it more and i am sooo excited to watch every minute of the action. GO FLYERS
