Don't underestimate Seneca as Browns backup qb

I saw a report that Seneca was struggling to adapt to the Browns offense. I can go find it, did real all of it.

But Wallace, in 2008, played in ten games, ran 16 times for 72 yards. So, he is no Anderson Bigfoot.

In his career, his qb rating has always been in the 80's, at least.

And, Banks had him rated as the #5 backup qb. That's a pretty good backup for the Browns....

SI ranks Seahawks' Seneca fifth-best backup QB

Given that some football people will tell you the second-most important player on a football team is the backup quarterback due to the incredible value placed on that position, there's an interesting story today on Sports Illustrated's website rating the NFL's second-string signal callers.

If you trust Banks' judgment, the Seattle Seahawks are in pretty good position as he lists Seneca Wallace No. 5 in the league.

Banks has Michael Vick second behind Oakland's Jeff Garcia.

As for Seattle's NFC West competition, Arizona's Matt Leinart (No. 22), San Francisco's Alex Smith (23) and St. Louis' Kyle Boller (29) are all rated in the bottom third of the league.

With Rams starter Marc Bulger sidelined for a couple weeks with a broken pinkie finger on his throwing hand, Boller is currently working as the starter in St. Louis. But while Bulger is missing preseason work, he plans to be back by the regular-season opener when the Rams play the Seahawks.

"It's my job to be ready whenever I can come back," Bulger said in this Associated Press article. "I'll try not to miss a beat. No. 1 on my list is Seattle. It's just going to be a pain thing."

As for Wallace, the Seahawks went 3-5 with him as a starter last year when Matt Hasselbeck was sidelined with a back injury. But Wallace was surrounded by an injury-hammered offense so it's tough to judge him strictly by the overall record.

Here's the take of SI's Banks:

I'm no Donnie-come-lately on Wallace, because I had the Seahawks veteran No. 6 in my backup rankings last season. He got substantial playing time last season, starting eight games in place of the injured Matt Hasselbeck, and even though Seattle didn't win much, it wasn't Wallace's fault. The former Iowa State star completed 58.3 percent, with 11 touchdowns, three interceptions and a more-than-solid 87.0 passer rating. There are a handful of teams Wallace could start for.

At 29, it'll be interesting to see how Wallace's future plays out. At some point, the guy deserves a shot as a full-time starter somewhere. But will that be in Seattle? Only time will tell.

And, the "WILDDAWG" offense was brilliant ! I can see the Browns fans chanting "WILDDAWG" whenever Cribbs and Wallace go out

    to the huddle...

and, btw, I can't WAIT until our SECONDARY STARTS BARKING AGAIN.

This coming season is going to be GREAT. And yeah, the first time somebody on TV calls in the WILDDAWG,

ClevelandFanForLife should get a free ticket to a game and a trophy. LOL

what i've heard from various reports here in cleveland is that wallace is coming along well. i haven't heard anything bad about him. his former oc (haskell) is helping daboll out with the playbook so i'm sure that helps.

Wallace could start today for us and be much better than BQ and DA were for us so it is at the very least, an upgrdade. The same could be said for Jake. And so if Jake were to go down, I wouldn't worry one bit about Seneca coming in.

Absolutely agree with you Mo! Seneca, while not a world beater, is a clear-cut upgrade above both DA and BQ and the same goes for Delhomme. Either way, we WILL have improved QB play this season.

Also, to piggyback off Zombo, i think if the Browns approach this the right away, they can really utliize this Wilddawg and make it work to another level and make it something VERY special for our team. I just hope it isn't a lot of talk as sometimes things of these natures can be.

if we run this properly and J-Money starts the season getting some touches into the pay dirt, defensive coordinators will HATE planning against us. not only will they have to eat up considerable minutes going over and over how they're going to try and contain it (as we all know cribbs is unstoppable), but its impossible to find a practice squad to run it because nobody has anybody like cribbs. dude is a FREAK

Is J-money supposed to be Jake Delhomme, James Davis, Josh Cribbs, Jennings, or Jerome Harrison? 😁

Seneca Wallace having a Hall of Fame type practice. That's only a slight exaggeration

Wallace is a solid backup. I don't think he will ever lead a team to a SB but very few backups ever will. Laugh all you want but Wallace is 10x better than what Cleveland had starting under center all last year. It is progress.
