Concerned About McCoy

I don't think he was drafted as a franchise QB. We have to get over this notion that every qb we draft is going to be our starter.
Holmgren has a history of getting guys with some talent and at least groom them as a soild back-up. He drafted wallace, and he picked up Frye. Not to be his "Franchise" qb, but to be solid back-ups.
The fact of the matter is there are plenty of 1st round qbs who play the back-up role.
Maybe it is to the point you have to get just plain lucky to get a solid back-up qb with a 6th round pick. So unless you plan on getting lucky you need to spring a choice on a QB fairly early in the process.
We did that. Now we have a guy who should be able to become a decnt 2nd qb, and who knows, maybe a solid starter.....but if you and others are waiting for the day Colt is a top of the league qb, i think you are going to have a long wait.

I'm just hoping that both Colt & Ratty get to play some with the 1st string offense to see how they have progressed given some time to set up. Quite frankly, I don't think Jake or Seneca would have done very well behind the lines these young men have had to depend upon.

I haven't lost hope. I think I have a firm grasp on where he most likely fits in....if he exceeds that, great. If not, all teams need a guy capable of handing off and completing a few passes and winning a game or two along the way.
You can go one of two routes. You can bring in a guy like Strock, a sage vet who is over the hill, or you can bring in(draft or trade) a younger guy like Mike Pagel. Maybe not so sage, but still skilled enough to keep the boat floating.
Colt was picked at a perfect time. It is late enough for the position you can't really ever call him a bust, but early enough you have some hope for the future in he either beats the odds and excells, or plays well enough he fits the criteria of the before mentioned players.
Let's put it this way. Having Colt isn't going to keep us from selecting Mallett if given the chance. We aren't going to pass up top rated QB's to give Colt a 3-4 year try-out at the position. You do that for first rounders maybe.....not third rounders.

I believe Colt went 13 of 13 for about 130 yards tonight.
With that first start, he has about as many wins as BQ, I'll give ya that.

Well, he looked right horrible the first quarter with the fumbled snap (chalk that one up to being a shotgun qb @ Texas) and took a couple of unnecessary sacks. After that - he showed a pretty quick release, found the open guy and hit them in stride. What a refreshing change from Anderception- who couldn't hit a quick out to save his life.
MHO- with a decent running game Coltster doesn't need to have a 40-50 yard rocket launcher. With the running game working, linebackers will bite on play action, and McCoy can just lob 20 yarders over their heads- I saw plenty of that.

I shot a lot of video at the game in the first half. The video is a little shaky as it was taken from my seat in the 300 section so I probably won't upload it here, but in reviewing it this morning (stopping/starting, pausing, rewinding to replay over and over) I feel much better about Colt and his sacks than I did last night.
He did a nice job looking away from his intended target too. Actually, In some cases I think he should have thrown to who he was looking at. #1.)The Bears had scrubs in as well and their LB's weren't exactly reading Colts eyes and moving that direction anyhow. #2.) A time or two he looked off single coverage and threw to the slanting receiver on the other side who was fighting through a double-team. However, he was accurate and hit many in stride.
On a couple of the sacks; he looked for the quick slant, but these times LB's were playing the passing lanes, he pulled it down and looked to step through the pocket, but was closed on real quick. They were quick plays, it wasn't there, coverage was deep so he couldn't sail it over head, he tried to buy another second or two but was swallowed up. I'll leave that up to the OC or QB coach to game plan out of. Beats an INT though, or a fumble from leaving the ball high up near his shoulder while being hit.
I was impressed, not just with Colts reads, but with a few of the catches out of the back field as well. The timing is a lot more quicker this year and backs were getting the ball thrown near their vicinity just as they cleared the line. Often times the passes weren't necessarily in their bread baskets and they still hauled them in and picked up positive yards.
I was a little disappointed with the WR blocking after the completition of some of them slants and also after the dump offs. Had a few of our receivers continued their patterns across the field and put a body on a DB coming from the otherside, instead of turning up field and trying to get in front of the deep guy, I think Davis could have broken one off or at least got us the first down on the play that we were 3 yards short inside our ten where Dawson kicked a field goal.
We had a lot of guys out of position. Sitting by Ed, he pointed out that #81 Alex Smith should be cut today for his play. To Smith's credit, he is a TE asked to play FB last night. Give our RB's a lot more credit considering we didn't have anyone in there clearing holes.
I saw #66 Shawn Lauvao playing center and get knocked sideways on his dupper into the intended hole. I was a bit impressed with a few of the Bears Defensive tackles, especially the one who got penetration off the ball, stood his man up with his left forearm and knocked Lauvao on his keester with his right forearm. I'm going to go look up his number and note who that was.
I took a decent picture of Colt throwing over the LB's. He made some nice reads and throws. They weren't all dump-offs. He threw over the middle and to be 13-of-13 is pretty damn good.

mccoy looks very uncomfortable taking snaps under center, most of those passes were to the check downs anyway so I would hope he had a high completion %, although it is nice to see he is somewhat mobile, It was so frustrating watching DA trying to run with his size 34 shoes

In other words you are saying that Colt's 13 for 13 performance were essentially all long handoffs?
Personally, I would not go that far, but there is some validity to the statement.
Nevertheless, baby steps is needed here with him and going 13 for 13 is a nice little/big step for his confidence at least.

He did what was asked of him. 100% completion is as good as he can do. The highlights on NFL.com had at least one nice throw that he dropped over the LBs . Looked much more like the collegiate Colt than in the first three games. I think you're going to see far more production in the passing game out of the RBs.
The WCO is predicated on five eligible receivers being in play....and that stretches the defense's discipline. This year may look more like what it was supposed to look like last year.

I'm glad he is getting a longer stint tonight.
1. it will give him more game time with little pressure other than the pressure he puts on himself
2. We get to see whether he can get a rhythm going over more drive opportunites
3. we can compare him to the disaster BQ turned out to be wihtout that first round draft pick devastation feeling
in other words - he may make it he may not but at least we didn't pick him in the first. With JD and SW we have the chance to see him develop . He also won't be holding the clipboard with that "I should be out there" look on his face - slowly slowly catch monkey.

so having watched the game tonight at a more sociable Uk time, i can say I was right.
1. the kid did put pressure on himself to perform in what he knew would be his last chance to play this season. he may well have played dinks and dunks but he also managed to see downfield if not always executed perfectly.
2. he managed 13 / 13, not something we saw from our saviour in the number 10 shirt (which I like to call the exit number - RIP steptoe)
3. he looked like a decent prospect at QB for a third round pick who was out there to do what he was supposed to do - get some NFL experience
and finally - i am writing this wjilst drink so might have to review what I have said in the monring.
howie.

Colt looks very raw. I mean he looks more like BQ not being able to throw over 10 yards than a future franchise QB. Is anyone else concerned about this. that possibly he wont develop or progress. Or is it worse case scenario we have a solid back up QB for years to come?

I see his performance as what the future holds for McCoy. He has been highly accurate at every level and it showed when he got extensive playing time, 100% not a bad line. Finding the open receiver whether it's a wr or rb has not been a trait we have seen in the last few years. Colt will be just fine as a #3 or an inactive #4 each week.

Colt is a 3rd round pick and is being treated as such.....
Keep in mind though, he is the winningest QB in college history and he played in a pretty good football conference....
Isn't it refreshing that we don't have to immediately hang our hat on a rookie QB....
Colt McCoy is a winner along with being a smart football player.. He may turn out to be a career back up or he could be the Real McCoy----only time will tell...
Peace

Ken Dorsey and Ty Detmer won a lot of college games as well. It means nothing to an NFL player's ability.

I don't think McCoy is in a bad situation at all. I believe he is in a situation where he can learn and gain more knowledge this year than Clausen. He will be prepared when (not if) his time comes. I really don't care how far he throws tha ball. I've seen him throw long in college, so that is a non-issue for me. Besides, JaMarcus Russell could throw the ball a mile and a half, but to what success?
On one occaision in Denver, Hillis was asked what position he would like to play. His response was quarterback. He said that he could throw the ball farther than anyone else on the team. He just didn't know where it was going. Colt knows where his passes are going.
When McCoy plays his game, he uses the passing game to make yards and score TD's. But he also uses his passes for ball control. He had a poor running game at Texas, so he used his passing game to fill that void.
