Benard Needs To Lose Weight?
-
I'm sure alot of you have read that the coaches want Benard to lose weight and get back to his playing weight from last season. Apparently he came into camp 25 pounds heavier than last year because he knew that the coaches were going to move him to DE and he though he should put on the extra weight and due to the lockout the coaches never knew he was adding the weight and had a chance to tell him to stop. My question is has anyone actually seen him? I'm just looking at pictures from camp and if this guy put on 25 pounds I'm thinking that about 75% of it is pure muscle! The guy looks a lot bigger in the arms and chest compared to last year. I just trying to figure out how exactly this can be a bad thing. Sure have him lose the 10 odd pounds of fat he put on, but if he hasn't lost his speed or quickness then why is it a bad thing that he added some strength as well?

U said if he didn't lose his speed....what if he did? Account and quotes from shurmur suggest he lost a step, so ur point is moot. Once again making assumptions without ant evidence to support ur claim.
A speed rusher doest get faster as he gets bigger does he?

From what I have gotten from Shurmer is that he just wants him to lose the weight, I have yet to see a quotes from Shurmer about Benard being too slow. I actually read a article from nationalfootballathority where he said Benard still had a quick step that he used to but might just need to lose the fat. Putting on muscle should not make you slower especially when you are adding equal amount of muscle mass in your legs. I understand wanting him to lose the weight in fat but why would you want one of your players to lose weight in muscle at risk of hurting his strength. Hell it doesn't take a scientist to understand that losing your muscle mass in an attempt to drop weight isn't going to be good for him, hell it's not good for anyone. In order for him to put off any gained muscle mass he is going to have to eat a very restricted carb diet which is going to hurt him alot since the season has started. I say tell him sorry for not giving him a call during the one day in the lockout when they could talk to players and help him lose the amount of fat he put on and see what he can do with the added weight in muscle mass.

It sounds like you're the one assuming. I have yet to see a quote from Shurmur or anyone else that he's lost a step, gotten slower, or has any declined production; only that he's above his playing weight.

BEREA -- Observations from Browns training camp practice ...
• Coaches were surprised to see Marcus Benard come to camp about 25 pounds heavier than his 2010 playing weight of 256.
Coach Pat Shurmur made a point of saying after Monday's practice that Benard needs to get in better condition. Benard doesn't disagree. He said adding the weight was his idea when he learned the club intended to move him from outside linebacker to end in the new 4-3 defense. The coaches love Benard's quickness and feel the added weight cancels it. Chalk this one up to the owners lockout, which halted all communication between coaches and players for over four months.

notice that bernard DOESNT DISAGREE....
while i agree that its not explicitly stated he lost a step (thats my projection), adding weight sure isn't going to make him faster...is it? i mean, if he was fast enough with the extra weoght, would they make such a big deal out of him losing it?
im just accepting the eyeball test from folks whose opinions i trust...do i expect him to be significantly slower....nope. but he sure as hell isn't gonna be faster...and not necessarily stronger. fact is...coaches want him to lose some weight....he himself agrees. if they want him as a speed rusher, then then dropping the weight should only help him be nimble.
