Actually, it shows that Heckert's predecessors are more likely the buffoons.
Here is a fact: a quality NFL team should have at its core a number of quality 3-7 year veterans that were drafted by that team. I believe each of those years on a good team would have produced at least 2 per year. The Browns have oh so very few of those types on this squad.
So, lets look at the drafts of the Browns of the last 3-7 years and see who we have on this team:
2005 Browns top picks were Braylon Edwards, Brodney Pool, Charlie Frye, Antonio Perkins....not a single current contributor
2006 Browns Top picks Kameron Wimbley, DQwell Jackson, Travis Wilson, Leon Williams, Jerome Harrison, Lawrence Vickers....only DQJ is currently a contributor. Vickers had his years, but is now gone, and Harrison had about a 5 game splash.
2007 Browns top picks were Joe Thomas, Brady Quinn, Eric Wright, Brandon McDonald.....only JT is here doing a job
2008 Browns top picks were Beau Bell, Martin Rucker, Ahtyba Rubin, Alex Hall.....only Rubin is here contributing
2009 Browns top picks were Alex Mack, Brian Robiskie, MoMass, Veikune, Maiava...Mack is good, Robo a waste, MoMass improving, and maybe one of the other guys contributes on special teams.
Pre 2005 sees only long snapper Ryan Pontbriand on this team.
Thus, in my opinion, where we should have at minimum 12 contributors from these years the Browns have only 5 or 6. Thus the Browns HAVE to rely on 1st and second year players to actually constitute the core of this team. In the last 2 drafts we have Haden, Ward, Hardesty, McCoy, Lauvao, Taylor, Sheard, Pinkston, Little, Skrine and maybe a couple of others. Almost half this team is made up of Tenderfoots really.
To make up for the poor drafting in prior years the Browns have had to rely on middle of the road FAs like Gocong, Sheldon Brown, Scott Fujita et al.
It seems to me that Heckert has done a decent job of drafting....but he is clearly going to need another quality draft to fill in holes made by the failures begat from prior drafts.
