Qb Situation And The Offense=Draft

The Browns Board

  • if you are blaming the QB for the offense then you're lookin in the wrong direction

normally im all about the offensive line but when steinbach comes back it should be alright as long as they address the other tackle position

first and foremost the browns need a WR. justin blackmon or alshon jeffries should be available and either would turn the browns WR corps around immediately

look at what green is doing for cincy.....blackmon and jeffries are better than aj green and the browns line should be better than the bengals line next year

draft a WR and a tackle and solve the problems on offense

wow. i agree with the D&D basement dweller.

we've got way to many holes to fill to burn another one on QB. it isn't colt. lat year and this year are like worlds apart with his play. no. it's the new system. hire an OC who can tweak this WCO shit to within colt's grasp, WR, RT, CB/S, LB, DE.....how many more picks?

  • mind blown that people are suggesting trading up when we have soo many holes. just fill them already.

I do agree that they need to change the offense a little to highlight McCoy's strengths instead of forcing this style of offense, and I think they have on a small scale (we saw a little more shotgun action) hopefully this continues.

And yeah, no doubt an OC.

Not enough people seem concerned about our TERRIBLE run defense though.

  • I just don't think people understand the scope of what i am saying... i mean i HEAR you when you guys say WR CB LB etc makes us better, but i am going to disagree, the way it stands i don't believe having the WR and even 2 stud linebackers would make us a PLAYOFF CONTENDER holy shit i used two different words there if you are HEARING me Playoff and Contender.

Unless we change the offensive scheme to highlight McCoys strengths, then this will always be a shit sandwiche and let's be honest Holmgreen and Shurmur aren't getting rid of the WCO and if McCoy can't run it well enough he has to go, it's all i am saying.

Our First Pick should be the best QB on the board and i am thinking that's Barkley... I am not one to trade the kitchen sink for Luck though just won't break the bank for it, I would be very comfortable trying to package a deal for 2 picks in the top 8 only if i get a QB/WR combo and every pick from round 2-7 are all linebackers and free agency addresses OL and a runningback (Hillis resign works for me)

But all in all please guys i came to these forums talking about the Kool-Aid and theres no need to drink it atm, when this season ends we really need to rethink our offensive roster and scheme.

Yea, and drafting Tim Couch was going to make us a playoff contender right away, and drafting Brady Quinn was going to put us over the edge.

Yea, this team needs to rethink its offensive scheme and its roster, but right now, QB is far, far from our largest concern or our largest weakness on this team. Let's draft what we need, not for a luxury item.

  • The Browns really cannot miss on this draft.

We could draft a CB and a pass rusher LB and be pretty much set for defense. (one more DE eventually but its not a serious issue, Sheard and Taylor have been clutch)

Or we could draft any combo of WR/RT/RB and have our offense greatly improved.

Good teams build up around mediocre QBs (see : Tommy Maddox and the Steelers) and then get the good QB, not throw a good QB in the line of fire.

How is DE not a serious issue? Rewatch the Ravens game and keep a close eye on Jayme Mitchell. Phil Dawson could do a better job defending the run. He was replaced bye a rookie UDFA until he got injured for the season last week, then in the second half Sunday Brian Shaffering got the bulk of the reps at RDE because Mitchell is worthless. He's a huge part of why our run defense leaves alot to be desired.

DE should be our #1 priority defensively, and in the top 2 or 3 of overall needs. I would say WR, DE, LB are top 3. If Hills isn't resigned then add a running back before linebacker

It's going to be hard to pick RG3 when he's not coming out this year.

If you were smart, which we all know you're not, you would have known that.

Wtf are you talking about? Why are you so confident he doesn't come out? NO PLAYER (excepts freshman/seniors ovbiously) have publically stated whether they are entering the draft or not! Now who's stupid.

He's said a number of times that he would rather return for a year of law school, try out for the Olympics, and try and lead Baylor to a BCS bowl and that the NFL will always be there but school comes first. Here's an example, douche.

"I'm not leaning towards leaving," says Griffin, who is projected by ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. to be a first-round NFL draft pick. "It's not like I have to leave. If I come back, I'll be excited because we're building something special here."

    Do your research, cocklips.

Next time you have the urge to say something, go fuck yourself instead.

I agree with you on this. While RG3 would be a very exciting pick up (I fully understand he might not come out this year and would be pleasantly surprised if he did) I wouldn't feel comfortable throwing him out there when we have much more pressing needs. Id love to see us pick up a legit WR and RB (Blackmon/ James would be perfect in my opinion) before we pick up another qb. While I've never been quite sold on Colt he is still only in his second year and I'd like to give him at least one more year, especially with a full offseason, to find out for sure if he's our future starter or future back up. I know Shurmur has looked nothing short of awful this year but again its his first year trying this whole head coaching thing. I know it sounds like I'm making excuses for Colt and Shurmur because well I am. Its a lot easier for me to digest this season with that logic but to get back to my main point I truly believe its going to be in our best interest, long term, to get our weapons in place before we go after a QB high in the draft and who knows we very well still might be able to get RG3 in the 2013 draft.

Calvin Johnson would have 4 Touchdowns and thats it and i don't base that on a think, its kinda hard to score when you throw 3 yard passes all day and in every situation.

I'm not sold on colt as the guy either but its hard to get a gage of how bad he is with his surrounding cast..

I tell you what he is no blaine gabbert

Unless our WRS could dunk in the NFL Colt McCoy throws passes so high and most often behind our recievers its a joke, I'll say it's harder to evalute Greg Little than it is McCoy i have every game on DVR i watched em all and i'll be dead honest with you... McCoy and the Play calling both suck here is an interesting fact out of every game only 3 passes have hit our WRS in the numbers everything else has been off target WAY off of acceptable.

Last year Colt had the White Rhino to take alot of that pressure off and this year we see how that's working out and without the ground and pound we have to expect McCoy to pass in the WCO and well HOUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM.

You are nibbleing around the edges of a very important point. I believe that the biggest issue on offense for us has been the deploreable offensive line play. Especially on the right side. Colt McCoy is not the problem with this team. He is suffering because of the problems we do have though.

Last season we had a solid O line. Then one guy retires and another isn't resigned. Lastly, just before the season started Eric Stienbach goes on IR.Before the first snap that counted this season our Oline went from solid and deep to shaky and thin. Then our RBs get banged up. Jackson didn't even play a down. Hillis and Hardesty couldn't make it throught the first half of the season with out missing significant time. So where does that leave Colt? In a world of hurt that's where. Without a dependable O line or running game Colt spends more time running for his life than he does reading Ds.That also explains sufficiently enough for me his accuracy issues, though I dissagree with the assertion that he is inaccureate.

Colt has what it takes to succeed in the NFL but this is a team game. He needs solid play around him.

  • I agree that there is a lot that needs improvement with the Browns. Talented players, coaches, systems, execution, play calling .... And yes, if you've ever played the game, you will know that improvement in one area synergistically improves other areas. SO there is much to do - which means we can't draft until we really know what's available. If H&H&S see their QB guy (a guy they really believe has the talent to be a franchise QB), they're not so in love with McCoy that they'll pass on the draft choice to meet another need. But if the QB's available are risky choices, they may decide to wait another year and focus the draft choices on other areas of needs. Bottom line, I wouldn't be shocked at a QB with their fist draft choice, but I also wouldn't be shocked if they didn't pick a QB at all.

  • We're not building a team around McCoy's style. McCoy has been in a shotgun spread his entire career, and only looks comfortable when we go shotgun in the hurry up. He looks awful trying to fit into the WCO. Are you even watching the games or do you just read a recap and spit out bullshit?

You've said yourself a number of times how inaccurate McCoy is and how he doesn't fit in the WCO, and it's blatantly obvious were not going to switch offensive theories.

Holmgren is going to take a QB every year, that's what he does. It doesn't mean he's a actively trying to replace the starter, he just takes a project QB in the later rounds every year.

McCoy is staying for the time being. Unless we trade for Matt Flynn, McCoy will be the starter next season while they continue to build the offense. Then, when they get a couple playmakers, you'll see Holmgren pull the trigger on a franchise QB.

Yes, obviously my statements made about those guys were facetious.

I think we need a new approach. Honestly, I do not think the Browns should be saying "we gotta have a superstar QB", and then try to turn average into super. If we were in position to take Andrew Luck, that would be different. But we won't be in that position.

I have said it several times on here the last few days: Do what the Steelers and Ravens did. Build your team around defense and the run game, then as the last piece of the puzzle put that QB in position to take you over the hump.

The browns have alot of options this coming draft and with free agency with having to use the cap space and we could see a major shuffle up, but i still believe the number 1 issue is QB, you can't give me any stud WR right now in the league and colt would make them look terrible..... I don't think there is anything wrong with Colt McCoy that a solid defense and running game could not cure. I don't think there is anything right about Joe Flacco and Ben Roethlisberger that a solid defense and running game has not already cured.
