Hey Browns Fans! I've got a good feeling about this kid out of Idaho. He was drafted by the Redskins I think. Now I've got nothing against the kid Marecic except that he's not Lawrence Vickers and he can't blow a hole through the defense. I hope that he can beef up and become a great FB at this level but so far all he has done is clog up the hole on running plays. Will this kid be the next Vickers, I don't know. Vickers was a 6th round pick I believe... this kid went a little higher, correct me if I'm wrong as I know almost nothing about him except that he can't possibly be any worse than Owen at this point. He certainly looks the part and in his interview he said that when blocking for a back like Hillis that all he has to do is run into a defense and knock things around and Hillis power in there and can use his feet to make plays. Williams is said to be a good West Coast FB and he himself says that he's at his best in space CATCHING the ball(for all you who had beef with Vickers cause he can't catch 😒 ).

As long as he can take out and eliminate at least one Linebacker on the defense and give Hillis a little room to work with we could see Hillis start to take off again. One thing that I noticed is when Hillis was in there the Blocking up front was just horrendous. I think that is why he was screaming the other game, every time it was his turn to run there were absolutely no holes anywhere. Then Obi or Hardesty would get in there and there would at least be a little gap. But it seemed like when Hillis went in there was nothing. Usually the hole that should be there was occupied by an "in over his head and outmatched" Marecic. God I hope this kid Williams proves to have a chip on his shoulder and can at least fill one of Vickers shoes, as Marecic cannot even tie his own shoes without sustaining a concussion. It's sad cause he's a good kid just not the slopper-knocker we need right now.

I know it seems far reaching that a lowly FB could change our fate and help us claw back into the light. However, I tend to be in the minority in believing that a great FB that can block and impose his will on a defenses linebackers will really open up the run game for our beast of a HB "The Juggernaut" Peyton Hillis. And when Peyton gets running downhill it only opens up our passing game to be successful. Despite all the things this team NEEDS, a powerful and imposing FB like Vickers is the one ingredient that we desperately need to move forward. Handing the job to an untested, unproven and green rookie was this regimes biggest mistake.

Well, here's to praying that Williams is our next Lawrence Vickers and the sky's his limit!

Anyone with any inside information on the kid please post your notes and thoughts here.

I'm not implying that we cut Marecic. Owen is most def still on the team, however this week he will not be traveling to Arizona with the team. Williams on the other hand will be. He was promoted from the practice squad to fill in for Marecic this week. I'm just hoping against hope that he really blows up the defense and we find another Vickers type player... a diamond in the rough...

Browns tight end Benjamin Watson done for season after suffering third concussion since training camp

              By Nate Ulrich

              Beacon Journal sports writer

              Published: December 17, 2011 - 12:00 AM

BEREA: Often overshadowed by the controversy surrounding the Browns’ handling of quarterback Colt McCoy’s concussion is this sobering fact: In the same game Dec. 8 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, tight end Benjamin Watson suffered his third concussion since training camp.

Watson, one of the Browns’ best offensive players in each of the past two seasons, was placed on injured reserve Friday. McCoy and rookie fullback Owen Marecic, who also suffered a concussion against the Steelers, have been ruled out for Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals (6-7) and did not travel with the team Friday afternoon.

The Browns (4-9) filled Watson’s spot by promoting fullback Eddie Williams from their practice squad to their active roster. Watson was evaluated by a specialist on head injuries earlier this week and did not practice.

“He’s disappointed, but it’s the right course of action right now,” Shurmur said of Watson. “I think he wishes he could still be with us, but we’ll make this move now and hopefully get him back next year.”

Watson’s string of concussions began July 30, when he took an inadvertent knee to his helmet during the Browns’ first practice of training camp. He then suffered a concussion Oct. 23 against the Seattle Seahawks and sat out all but one play from scrimmage in the second half. He left the game against the Steelers after free safety Ryan Clark hit him on an incomplete pass with 3:37 left in the second quarter.

“It’s a very difficult situation to put yourself in, and he’s a father, he’s a husband,” tight end Alex Smith said. “You have to look outside of football, and take those things into consideration. It’s one of those things where he feels good, he feels like he can still play but kind of [needs] to be smart about the situation.

“Ben’s one of our key players. He’s been one of our leaders here for the last couple of years. It’s definitely a big blow for us, but we just have to take the motto of ‘next man up.’ ”

Watson ranks second on the team in catches (37) and receiving yards (410). Last season, he led the Browns in both categories with 68 catches for 763 yards.

Despite the concussions, Watson did not miss a game this season. He’ll sit out the final three.

“That’s a big loss,” tight end Evan Moore said. “I mean all of us are really close with Ben. We wish him the best, too, in his recovery. I know that’s a decision he had to make with the doctors for his family [and] his own well-being.

“As far as we know, as far as the research that’s been done and all that, the more [concussions] you get, the scarier it is. So I think we as players take that pretty seriously.”

Incidentally, the NFL fined Watson $7,500 Friday for his late hit on Steelers linebacker Jason Worilds in the second quarter. He was penalized for unnecessary roughness.

Watson’s teammates expect him to return next season. He has one year left on the three-year contract he signed on March 12, 2010, to join the Browns as an unrestricted free agent.

“He’s pretty much just saying he’s done for these last few games,” Smith said. “I’m sure he’ll probably bounce back for next year.”

Meanwhile, several Browns players hope the league and the NFL Players Association can take steps to better handle concussions. McCoy sat out two plays and re-entered the game late in the fourth quarter after he suffered a concussion as a result of a vicious helmet-to-facemask hit from Steelers linebacker James Harrison. The NFL denied Harrison’s appeal of his one-game suspension on Friday.

Representatives from the NFL and players’ union met with the Browns this week to discuss the incident involving McCoy. Changes to the league’s protocol for handling concussions could be made.

“I think that’s something that we could’ve addressed in the CBA before we finished things up,” Moore said. “I think we as players tried to push for health issues, but I think we sacrificed a couple things in the interest of getting the business side of it done.

“I thought we could have done a better job as a union — that’s how I personally feel — of making sure we look after players first. … It’s something we could have done better and the unfortunate thing is we have a 10-year CBA with no opt out, so we’ve gotta try to find a way to get it done before then.”

All I am going to say is that we should never draft another FB unless it's like the 7th round. We had Clutts and let him go and he was a RFA pick up from the year before and he is doing great things in Chicago now.

Excatly Clutts has looked good in CHI-Town and we let him walk for Owen i never understood that pick as well as the Jordan Cameron one it didnt make sense we almost used those picks as sort of luxury picks when we need all the talent we can get...

I like the Cameron pick. Watson only has another season or two at best and Cameron has the kind of raw talent to turn into a top TE in the league and could be around the level of Jimmy Grahmn in a season or two.

I think Marecic's out of football in 2 years. Something like 3 concussion's in his rookie year, he won't be around long unless he learns to block with his hands instead of his head.

He could always make the transition to LB and be the second coming of James Harrison... 😆

This is his first concussion, it's Ben Watson who has 3 concussions this season and he already said that the doctors told him that they think he would be more than healthy enough to play again next season.

Honestly why not try him at linebacker? Seriously, the Browns have no depth at linebacker and he can't be worse than he's already been as a FB. I don't personally feel you should draft fullbacks. Let some other teams waste their picks and pick up one in free agency. Wtf is a West Coast Fullback anyways? They still only touch the ball 10 times a season at most. SMH.

Marecic did play LB full time at Stanford. At worst he should be a backup LB.
