Draft All Defense?
-
All things considered, it is still possible that it is defense that wins Championships....at least it helps mightily...so....perhap the Browns should go that route with their first 3 picks. Sounds crazy, but it is a strategy worth considering. So how about this draft:
4th overall pick: Maurice Claiborne CB LSU
22-25th pick: Zach Brown LB NC, or Donta Hightower, LB Alabama
36th pick: Nick Perry DE USC, Whitney Mercilus DE Illinois, Melvin Ingram DE So. Carolina, or Fletcher Cox DE Miss. State?
Honestly, the Browns could probably do far worse.
On the other hand, for all those saying it is offense, not defense we need, I get it. Thus, how about this:
4th pick: RGIII, QB Baylor
22-25 pick: Kendell Wright WR Baylor
36th pick: LeMichael James RB Oregon

I like your offensive draft, except James. At 36 we need a LB or OL, which ever brings the most value.

In the third round the Browns take Levy Adcock OT from OK. St.

Adcock is fat and slow!! if you draft him i will probablyy cry... would rather bring back the "big Reindeer"

Like your picks.

I am all for drafting D early and often. We can get a good RB in round 3. RB's have taken a bit of a hit in value in the draft the past couple of years. I think we can grab James in round 3 and sign a stud WR. I also think if we are not going to pick RGIII we should trade the 4 (if we do indeed end up with it) to the Skins or Phins. We coud move down to one of there picks around 7-10 and pick up atleast another second rounder and if they get into a bidding war we can prob get a first next year. Especially since Barkley is staying in school. The demand for RGIII probably went up a bit.
I would prefer getting a stud pass rushing OLB or DE with the first of our picks and waiting till the Falcons pick to go CB.

All I'm saying is that between Blackmon, Richardson and RGIII or Luck one of those guys is going to fall into the browns lap. All those guys IMO are going to be pro bowl offensive players and you're crazy (hypothetically) to think offense isn't the first priority. After that, I wouldn't be upset to see a LB or DE with the second 1st round pick.
-
RGIII has said he hasn't decided to enter the NFL draft next spring. Richardson has said he won't.
That complicates things? OR simplifies them? Too early to do a mock draft.

IMO in todays NFL using a top 5 pick on a running back is nuts. Especially when that running back isn't the last piece of the puzzle.

Rather Draft Offense and Defense first round
Blackmon at 4
Minnefield in the 20s
LB OL rest of draft
And hopefully we do anything in free agency at all i'd love to sign a WR that brings a namebrand with him i.e. Vincent/Desean Jackson or a Mario Manningham to play across from Blackmon and i really believe this offense will be way better next year and our defense picking up another lockdown corner and all the LBS rest of the draft and seriously we shouldn't have nothing to cry about next year.
Reality is we will trade all our picks, won't touch free agency, and H&H will sit up in the boxes next year with that dumbfounded look on their fucking faces.
-
H&H should call Goolie and see what he wants...
I think Goolie would tell them to go O-line with the first 2 picks and a kicker in the second and a long snapper in the third.
This way Goolie can come on here and Blast the Browns every week...Of course I would too

Hillis made a late season push to either keep his job or raise his value to other teams.
It would be stupid to let Hillis walk only to draft a Richardson with the 4th pick in this years draft. Richardson and Hillis are cut from the same mold as far as runningbacks go. Richardson may be a hair faster than Hillis, but I honestly don't believe he is. Personally, I don't think Richardson is nearly as fast as the reports out of Alabama claim, and I doubt he'll run a 4.4 in the combine. He hasn't shown any sort of stellar breakaway speed; Richardson isn't fast, nor is he slow. He is of what I believe to be average speed. Fact is, he's a bruising back who's not going to break as many tackles in the NFL as he does in the NCAA. As I previously stated, to dump Hillis for Richardson doesn't seem to make any sort of sense from the fiscal standpoint or from the production standpoint.
In 2008, Darren McFadden was picked 4th overall by the Oakland Raiders. His contract was 6 years, $60 million. Richardson will no doubt command more, since 4 years have passed since that contract and the Browns obviously have the cap room to accomodate a large contract.
Although the exact figures aren't readily available, Hillis is reportedly asking for $4 million a year. At age 25, it's safe to assume Hillis is looking at signing a 5-6 year contract. This would leave him at age 30-31 when his current contract expires. In the NFL, once an RB hits age 30, he's considered over-the-hill and is no longer needed, no matter his contributions or pedigree. (see: Thomas Jones, LaDanian Tomlinson). That would leave a 6 year/$24 million contract (not figuring in backloaded NFL contract figures and shit).
To resign Hillis would make infinitely more sense, considering as it would cost the team less than half it would to draft Richardson and by not drafting Richardson, the team can fill a different offensive void.
Of course, knowing all this doesn't matter, we're still going to cut Hillis and draft Richardson because fuck all.

I don't know if we will resign Hillis or not (4 million a year would be fine with me). I could see H and H doing either. But Heckert hasn't drafted RBs with 1st round picks. If we draft a RB in the 2012 draft it will be in the 2nd or 3rd round (Heckert drafted both Hardesty and LeSean McCoy in the 2nd round).

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past six months you'd know that the new labor agreement added a rookie salary cap.

I thought salary caps weren't going to be in effect in the upcoming season?
