  • cd: no, the answer to the bonus is not Tim Couch. Correct me if I am wrong, but that is the only question you attempted to answer, isn't it? I didn't want to miss an answer.

Here is this week's trivia, all about quarterbacks and the draft:

    1. Who is the most recent QB drafted in the first round to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame?

    Aikman

    Check

    2. Name the QBs that have been taken in the first round of the NFL draft since 1970 that have been inducted into the PFHOF.

Bradshaw, Elway, Marino, Kelly, Aikman ... Steve Young was taken in the first round of the supplemental draft, are we counting that?

Absolutely. I would have given you the full check even if you didn't mention Young. He, like the supplemental draftee that he was, is just a little bonus.

    3. Name the QBs that have been taken in the second round of the NFL draft since 1970 that have been inducted into the PFHOF.

    Cant think of any...

    4. Name the QBs that have been taken in the third round of the NFL draft since 1970 that have been inducted into the PFHOF.

Joe Montana That is one. Partial check.

    5. Who is the QB that was drafted in the 2d round of the 1982 draft with the 44th overall pick? (hint: he is NOT in the PFHOF)

    Jim McMahon?

    No

    6. Since 1970 the Browns have taken 4 QBs in the 4th round of the draft. Name them.

Luke McCown, Eric Zeier, Johnny Evans, Paul Mcdonald

Partial check. You got the two that counted. The Apostles Luke and Paul.

    7. Since 1970 the Browns have drafted only 4 QBs in the 5th round or later who ever actually appeared in an NFL game for them. Name these 4 QBs

Note: the Browns may have drafted more than 4 in the 5th round or later, but only these 4 ever appeared in a game.

Spergeon Wynn, Brian Sipe, Todd Feelscocks, Dr. David Mays

Again, you got the two that counted. Partial check.

    8. From the inception of the draft in 1936 to present, which Ohio State QB that was drafted threw for the most yards in his NFL career?

Tom Tupa? Kent Graham is my backup answer.

As is so often the case, the backup QB is...or should be more popular.

    9. Of all the Michigan QBs drafted from 1936 to present, Tom Brady threw for the most yards in his NFL career. Which Michigan QB is second?

    Jim Harbaugh

    Check

    10. From 1936 to present, which QB drafted from one of the eight Ivy League schools has thrown for the most yards in his career?

Note: Ivy League schools are: Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn, Princeton, Yale.

    Ryan Fitzpatrick

    NO

    11. Robert Griffin III of Baylor will likely be a very high pick in the draft. Before Griffin the last QB taken from Baylor, in any round of the draft, was taken 25 years ago. He was a third round pick in the 1987 draft. Who was this QB?

    Patrick Fitzryan?

Irishmen like you and I should drink to that in honor of it being a wrong answer.

    12. What is the defining common characteristic of each of these names: Keithen McCant, Clemente Gordon, Steve Slayden, John Bond, Steve Michuta, Mike Cilek, Jake Gibbs, Jim Walden, John Furman, Pat Screen?

Drafted by the Browns but never played?

In the words of Jules Winfield: Correctamundo!

Bonus: Since 1950 the QBs drafted by the Browns that have thrown for the most yards in a Browns uniform have been: 1st: Brian Sipe, 2d: Bernie Kosar.

Who is third on this list.

(note: Otto Graham is not the answer as he was pre-1950 and he was not drafted by the Browns...he was a 4th round pick of the Lions)

I would say Tim Couch too. Frank Ryan was drafted by the Rams.

You would be incorrect too. And yea, Ryan was obtained through a trade.

Hint for others: Neither Kelly Holcomb nor Derek Anderson nor Bill Nelsen were drafted by the Browns.

I looked it up, Couch had more yards than Phipps by far. The answer to the question, the way you wrote it, is Tim Couch.

    Z

That is not what I came up with...unless the info I had included yardage the guy I had had with other teams. I will check.

    Z

OK, I checked. It was Tim Couch. I had had Milt plum, but his 17000 plus yards included his years with other teams. Couch had 11131 yards with the Browns, Plum 8914....but he had again that much with the Lions.

    Answers:

    1. Who is the most recent QB drafted in the first round to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame?

    Troy Aikman, drafted in 1989

    2. Name the QBs that have been taken in the first round of the NFL draft since 1970 that have been inducted into the PFHOF.

Aikman, John Elway, Jim Kelly, Dan Marino, Terry Bradshaw and as noted Steve Young in the 1984 Supp. draft. Note that of the 6, 3 of them were from that 1983 draft class. Bradshaw was taken in 1970, and Aikman, as mentioned in 1989. Needless to say, a Hall of Fame caliber QB is not taken every year...in the first round.

    3. Name the QBs that have been taken in the second round of the NFL draft since 1970 that have been inducted into the PFHOF.

Trick question, sorta. The answer is: NO QBs that were drafted in round 2 since 1970 have made it to the HOF, yet. However, one for sure will make it: Brett Favre. And Drew Brees, another future possibility may also get there one day.

    4. Name the QBs that have been taken in the third round of the NFL draft since 1970 that have been inducted into the PFHOF.

In the decade of the 70s the third round was more productive than either the first or 2d round.

Joe Montana and Dan Fouts were the 3rd round picks drafted since 1970 to make the HOF.

    5. Who is the QB that was drafted in the 2d round of the 1982 draft with the 44th overall pick? (hint: he is NOT in the PFHOF)

Oliver Luck.....father of this year's certain overall #1 pick....by the Houston Oilers.

    6. Since 1970 the Browns have taken 4 QBs in the 4th round of the draft. Name them.

Luke McCown 2004, Paul McDonald 1980, Gene Swick 1976, Randy Mattingly 1973. I believe the latter 2 never played a game for the Browns.

    7. Since 1970 the Browns have drafted only 4 QBs in the 5th round or later who ever actually appeared in an NFL game for them. Name these 4 QBs

Note: the Browns may have drafted more than 4 in the 5th round or later, but only these 4 ever appeared in a game.

    1. Mike Norseth taken in the 7th round in the 1988 draft. Played 1 game. Didn't throw a pass, but had one rush for 5 yards.

    2. Terry Nugent (not sure if he was related to Ted Nugent....Ted probably would have been a better choice). Taken in the 6th round of the 1987 draft. Played 1 game. Was 3 for 5 for 47 yards for his career.

    3. Spergon Wynn. Taken in the 6th round of the 2000 draft. (Oh, yes....taken a few slots just before Tom Brady). Played in 10 games with 70 completions in 152 attempts for 585 yards and 1 TD.

pretty slim pickings, eh? How 'bout this next guy:

    4. Brian Sipe. Taken in round 13 of the 1972 draft. Played 125 games. Browns all time leader in passes with 3439, completions with 1944, TD passes with 154, yards with 23,713.

    8. From the inception of the draft in 1936 to present, which Ohio State QB that was drafted threw for the most yards in his NFL career?

Kent Graham with 7801 yards, mostly with the Giants.

    9. Of all the Michigan QBs drafted from 1936 to present, Tom Brady threw for the most yards in his NFL career. Which Michigan QB is second?

Jim Harbaugh with over 26,000 career passing yards. Brady is approaching 40,000.

    10. From 1936 to present, which QB drafted from one of the eight Ivy League schools has thrown for the most yards in his career?

Note: Ivy League schools are: Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn, Princeton, Yale.

Sid Luckman Hall of Famer, from Columbia with 14,686 yards with the Bears.

The Amish Rifle, Ryan Fitzpatrick from Harvard is second on the list now with 10936 yards...and will likely pass up Luckman some time before his career ends.

Third on the list is Gary Wood of Cornell with 5150 yards.

Fourth on the list of NFL passers from the Ivy League is none other than the famous B.D....Brian Dowling of Yale, who is the basis of the B.D. character of Doonesbury (and also from Cleveland St. Ignatius HS...same as Oliver Luck). He had all of 383 career passing yards with the Vikings.

Fifth is Bob Holly of Princeton with 300 passing yards.

Dartmouth, Brown and Penn have never produced an NFL QB.

But note: Two Ivy League schools have produced an NFL QB that have throw for more yards in their NFL career than any Ohio State QB ever has!

    11. Robert Griffin III of Baylor will likely be a very high pick in the draft. Before Griffin the last QB taken from Baylor, in any round of the draft, was taken 25 years ago. He was a third round pick in the 1987 draft. Who was this QB?

    Cody Carlson

(not related to Clarence Carlson whose estate I have sitting on my desk...at least, I don't think. I will have to ask his son.)

    12. What is the defining common characteristic of each of these names: Keithen McCant, Clemente Gordon, Steve Slayden, John Bond, Steve Michuta, Mike Cilek, Jake Gibbs, Jim Walden, John Furman, Pat Screen?

These QBs were all drafted by the Browns....and none of them ever played in a game for them. They are not all old timers. Slayden was drafted in 1988.

This question was a screwup for me. I had Milt Plum with over 17,000 yards. But that was his career total with more than the Browns. With the Browns he had 8914 yards.

The correct answer is Tim Couch with 11,131 yards.
