Super Bowl Losers
-
For the 18th consecutive year the loser of the Super Bowl again fails to make it back as far as the Conference Championship game. Here are the results of what happened to the Super Bowl loser, going back to 1992 when the SB losing Bills again went back to the SB to lose again:
1992 Bills, return to the Super Bowl
1993 Bills, go 7-9 no playoff
1994 Chargers, lose in wild card round
1995 Steelers, lose in division round
1996 Pats, lose in division round
1997 Packers, lose in wild card round
1998 Falcons, go 5-11, no playoffs
1999 Titans, lose in divisin round
2000 Giants, 7-9, no playoffs
2001 Rams, 7-9, no playoffs
2002 Raiders, 4-12, no playoffs
2003 Panthers, 7-9, no playoffs
2004 Eagles, 6-10, no playoffs
2005 Seahawks, lose in division round
2006 Bears, 7-9, no playoffs
2007 Pats, 11-5, but no playoffs
2008 Cards, lose in division round
2009 Colts, lose in wild card round
2010 Steelers, lose in wild card round
Throughout Super Bowl history only the 1970 SB losing Cowboys and the 1971 SB losing Dolphins ever came back the next year to win the Super Bowl...Cowboys in 1971, Phins in 1972.
The only Super Bowl losing teams to come back to lose the Super Bowl again the next year were the 1986-1987 Broncos, and of course those 1991,1992,1993,1994 Bills.
I did not go back before 1992 to see which SB losing teams may have returned to a conference championship game, only to lose it. I suspect there were a few.
