Stand Alone Super Bowl Question

The Browns Board

  • I'll just take my stab at the SEC players i recall

    Starr

    Namath

    Stabler

    Manning, P.

    Manning, E.

    Tarketon

    Woodley

    Grossman

I don't think I am missing anybody, so 8 is my guess.

  • And for Independents You have Montana (Notre Dame) and Staubach (Naval Academy). Rothlispuke is Miami OH, MAC.

As to school with most qbs? Well Purdue has two, Griese and Brees. Alabama has two Stabler & Namath- so who has three?

Four anyone? Give me four? 🙂

    Bama has three....add Bart Starr.

  • I guess you could say that this is a "stand alone Super Bowl Trivia Question. So be it, though I think it may have some relevence to our Browns QB discussions. Here it is:

We are now to Super Bowl XLIV (46), which means that in Super Bowl history, there have been 96 starting Quarterbacks in Super Bowl history. Break down that number of 96 into how many of those QBs came from each of the following College conferences or categorie:

    ACC:

    Big East:

    Big 10:

    Big 12:

    PAC 12:

    SEC:

    Notre Dame and other Independents:

    WAC/MVC:

    Smaller colleges and conferences:

Note of course that of the 96 starting SB QBs, there have actually been only 52 players to fill those 96 slots, due obviously to return performances by many QBs, like this year Brady is making his 5th AB start and Eli his second.

Its not that I want to pull the plug on this thread, actually, I want to kick start it.

One of the problems with breaking this kind of thing down is the damn mobility that a lot of schools have in terms of conference switches. First a school is in the Big East, then the ACC, etc.

ACC: 3 Super Bowl starts. Here demonstrates the problem. I have ACC QBs starting only 3 SB games: Esiason 1 and O'Donnell 1 both of Maryland, and Brad Johnson 1 of FSU. (but note however that Miami and Boston College are now ACC teams that used to be Big East teams....I included them in the Big East

Big East: 9 SB starts. I have this conference...which has been scavenged with QBs starting 9 SBs:

Unitas 1 Louisville, Marino 2 of Pitt, Hostetler 1 of WVA (which is now moving), McNabb 1 of Syracuse, Hasselback 1 of Boston College and Kelly 4 Miami (of course these have since moved to the ACC)

Big 10: 14 SB Starts. Dawson 2..Griese 3...and Brees 1 of Purdue. Morrall 1 of Mich. ST. Brady 5 of Michigan. Eason 1 of Illinois. Kerry Collins 1 of Penn St. (and I am not sure if Penn St. was in the Big Ten when he played there)

PAC 12: 19 Super Bowl starts Plunkett 2 and Elway 5 of Stanford. Kilmer 1 and Aikman 3 of UCLA. Chris Chandler 1 of Washington. Mark Rypien 1 of Wash. St. Kapp 1, Morton 2, Rodgers 1, and Ferragamo 1 of Cal

SEC: 14 SB starts Starr 2...Namath 1...Stabler 1 of Alabama. Tarkenton 3 of Georgia. Woodley 1 of LSU. Grossman 1 of Florida. P. Manning 2 of Tenn. and Eli Manning 2 of Ole Miss

Notre Dame and other Independents: 11 Super Bowl starts I give this group 11 starts with Montana 4...Theisman 2...Lamonica 1 of Notre Dame. And Staubach 2 of Navy.

WAC/MVC: 3 Super Bowl Starts McMahon 1...and Steve Young 1 of BYU. Dilfer 1 of Fresno State

Smaller colleges and conferences: "]19 Super Bowl starts[/color]

Bradshaw 4 of Louisiana Tech. Warner 2 of Northern Iowa. Favre 2 of Southern Miss. Roethlisberger 2 of Miami Oh. Delhomme 1 of Louisiana-Lafayette. Gannon 1 of Delaware. McNair 1 of Alcorn St. Humphries 1 of Louisiana-Monroe (though he also attended LSU). Doug Williams 1 of Grambling. Simms 1 of Morehead St. Anderson 1 of Augustana, Ill. Jaworski 1 of Youngstown St.

Big 12: Here I could get technical and say that -0-, NONE, NADA came from The Big 12.

However, the Big 12 could possibly claim 2 halves of players.

Aikman attended Oklahoma for 1-2 years before transferring to UCLA.

And Vince Ferragamo played at Cal before transferring to Nebraska for his senior year.

Again, technically I could say that Nebraska isn't even in the Big 12 as it is now a Big 10 school, but we know that is a recent development.

Note of course that of the 96 starting SB QBs, there have actually been only 52 players to fill those 96 slots, due obviously to return performances by many QBs, like this year Brady is making his 5th AB start and Eli his second.

  • Here is my bottom line discussion point on this thread:

PAC 10 QBs: 19 Super Bowl starts

Small College QBs: 19 Super Bowl starts

Big 10 QBs: 14 Super Bowl starts

SEC QBs: 14 Super Bowl starts

Notre Dame and Independents QBs: 11 Super Bowl starts

Big East QBs: 9 Super Bowl starts

ACC QBs: 3 Super Bowl starts

Big 12 QBs: -0- Super Bowl starts

Also, note the QBs that were starters on this year's NFL playoff teams:

SEC schools: Tebow, Stafford, E. Manning

    Big Ten: Brady, Brees

    ACC: Ryan, TJ Yates

    Pac-12: Rodgers...Smith?

    MWC: Smith? Dalton?

    Small College/conference: Flacco, Roethlisberger

Note that Smith's school was an MWC member when he was there....as was Dalton's, but both those schools have moved on: Utah to the Pac 12, TCU is going to the Big 12.

Still, it is a case, it seems that schools from the SEC/Pac-12/Big Ten/Small schools dominate. The Big 12 just has no pull when it comes to QBs from that conference.

So, what is the moral of the story? Stay the F*** away from Big 12 QBs? Forget RGIII? Forget McCoy? Forget Tannehill?

Go for guys like Foles or Osweiler from the Pac 12? Or Kirk Cousins of Mich St.? Or better, perhaps small college sleepers like Domenique Davis of East Carolina, or Austin Davis of Southern Miss.

Maybe Delaware has a guy....it gave us Gannon and Flacco

The answer to the question is: The University of Cal-Berkely. It gave Joe Kapp, Craig Morton, Aaron Rodgers and Vince Ferragamo...at least part of him. In review, he spent 2 years at Cal, 2 at Nebraska.

Notre Dame had 3: Theisman, Montana, Lamonica

Purdue had 3: Griese, Dawson, Brees

Alabama had 3: Starr, Namath, Stabler

    Maryland has 2: O'Donnel, Esiason

    BYU has 2: McMahon, Young

    Stanford 2: Elway, Plunkett

    UCLA 2: Kilmer, Aikman

LSU 2: Woodley and Humphries (though he transferred out)

    2 x 46 = 96? 😕

What's striking is how many forgettable QB's started SB's...

LOL, I forgot Vince Ferragamo started in one. That list proves what I've been saying for years- you may not get to the Super Bowl consistently without a super stud qb, but you can sure as hell get to one with a very average qb, as long as the rest of the team is solid.

    Yes, I mis-typed. It should be 92.
