Colt Mcfrye

The Browns Board

  • I'm getting sick and tired of all the people who continue to make excuse for Colt McCoy. McCoy at this point in his career is terrible. Period. He's a 3rd round pick. The chances of him getting better are minuscule. Could it happen? Yes. Is it likely? No. Browns fans who continue to defend McCoy are like women who continue to defend their bad/abusive relationships. They continue to make weak excuses for McCoy and continue to hold out blind hope that he will one day be as good as Brees or Rodgers. They blame everyone else for McCoy's lack of production.

What's really sad is that Tim Couch was able to lead the Browns to more points in 1999 with a far worse offensive line and fewer playmakers than the Colt McCoy led offense produced this year. McCoy has 2 Pro Bowlers on offensive line. Tim Couch had none. The Browns in 1999 allowed 61 sacks! In 2011 the Browns only allowed 31. No running back in 1999 even rushed for 100 yards in a single game! Yes, Colt McCoy is arguably worse than Tim Couch was in 1999.

Below I will list the stats for another Hall of Fame 3rd round Browns QB: Charlie Frye. In 2006 Charlie Frye played in 13 games just like Colt McCoy did this year.

    Charlie Frye 2006 Game Log

    Colt McCoy 2011 Game Log

Notice how both of their QB ratings are nearly the same. Charlie Frye completed a higher percentage of passes (64%-57%) and averaged more yards/attempt(6.3-5.9). Yes, Colt McCoy is not much better at this point in his career than Charlie Frye. 5.9 Y/A is pathetic. This shows that he cannot throw down the field. A good QB will usually have a YPA over 7. 5.9 is inexcusable.

How many fans think it would have been a good idea to build around a 3rd round pick like Charlie Frye? Frye never was named a starter after he was traded by the Browns. If Colt McCoy were released today he would not be named the starter on any NFL team. The idea that we should build around McCoy is ludicrous. He is more likely to have a career path similar to Charlie Frye than to become a good quarterback in the NFL.

  • two years.

  • two years.

    ...technically, not even two years...

Last season he had NO offseason save for "Camp Colt"- which he did by himself. The year before he was never even given first team reps until Blowhomme and Wallace went down with injuries. The kid is gonna be great, just you wait and see. I'm all in with Colt..

  • Tim Couch outperformed Colt McCoy as a rookie with less talent around him.

  • Tim Couch was a beast. One tough SOB and Kevin Johnson was just as good a wide receiver as anyone the Browns had on the roster last year. Had Couch went to ANY team but the expansion Browns he would have been a ProBowler...

Oh man talk about looking back through rose colored glasses!!

    Couch a beast??!! Hilarious !!

  • couch was good coming out of college. chris palmer was one of the best QB gurus in the game and selected him #1. everything else about the team sucked. if we don't do anything to help the right side of the line and someone goes down on the left it will be a certain career crusher for mccoy same as couch.

browns kill QBs more than any team i can think of. oh and here are the fans: "he sucks one year trade/cut him the next."

go ahead draft RG3 and trade everything for him. let's see how he does with the same squad as last year. aholes.

  • I couldn't agree more, but most people on here will like you said defend the guy to death. The learning curve for QB's isn't two years anymore, whether you want to argue it is or not. Franchise QB's show their colors from day 1, and Colt hasn't even held the jock of those guys. I ask this all the time and just something to chew on: if colt was drafted to the falcons, lions, bengals, panthers or any other team that have taken their QB early, does he succeed with "better talent"? The answer is most likely no because many of the mistakes he commits have nothing do with how bad the talent is around him.

I'm not going to sit here and argue anymore over it though. To me, it couldn't be more obvious that Colt isn't ever going to be the guy and some people think he is. I think what we'll see in two years in Colt buried on a depth chart for some team and us with another QB, and people will sit and say that he "never got a real chance". I don't like doing the QB carousel anymore than any die-hard browns fan, but it needs to take another ride this time.

  • The best QB the browns have had since the return got no respect because everyone was looking to the next guy. Now that next guys is in Denver crying.

Colt may not be the guy or he may be but there are so many needs. I wouldn't take a QB this year. They'll be another can't miss guy next year like every year.

  • ...it's the song that never ends, it just goes on and on and on and on and on...

Give me Trent Richardson, Justin Blackmon, Kalil, Claiborn, Coples, Minnifield, Lamar Miller, Kendall Wright, Merciless, Burfict, DeCastro, "Kooche", Hightower, Kirkpatrick, Jenkins... any two of these players in the first round and maybe three with our first three picks- please, but no, no, no QB. Unless it's Luck than that trumps said decision...

We will never win until we get a good quarterback. It's the most important position. H&H didn't draft the first round busts in the past. They have nothing to do with the failures of past front offices. Whether you like H&H or not you have to give them a chance to get a decent QB.

i don't know either if colt is going to be 'the guy'. but why waste our first pick on a guy who you don't know will be 'the guy' either? why not give it another year? really. are we in that much need of a qb this year? there's a cb sitting there whose team mate (from last year..patrick petersen...you know him. he's one of the guys we were all salivating over last year) says is a better pure corner than he ever can be. or a de who would make an immediate impact on the pass rush?

i just don't get this NEED TO HAVE or this RUSH TO JUDGEMENT that has a lot of browns fans screaming to draft RG3. there are #1 qb prospects EVERY STINKIN YEAR. why not build this team with quality picks on both sides of the ball and see what happens then at qb? hey if he shits the bed, trade him or cut him or whatever. but we'll have a pick next year to get 'the guy' who may never turn out to be 'the guy'.

  • Well...Lets look at this a little further shall we?

    Randall Cunningham

    Daunte Culpepper

    Vince Young

    Michael Vick

    Donovan McNabb

Last time I checked only 4 teams in the entire NFL allowed fewer points than the Browns. All 4 of those teams made the playoffs. Offense is our biggest need. And the most important position on offense is QB. Colt McCoy did not play well last year, neither did he show any flashes of brilliance. No one can argue that. True any pick can be a bust, but you have to be willing to take a chance on the most important position. Everything in life involves risk; marriage, jobs, driving. People who never take chances never go anywhere in life.

I didnt say anything about race asshole...YOU DID!

  • You need to join this group at a tailgate sometime Nick...I like to meet the various characters on this board. Good to see you around.

At any rate, as for Colt....I don't really like the guy but it won't make me bonkers of we give him one more look.

I just think we need to have a viable option, and that isn't Wallace and whoever else was called a QB.

  • I'm one who is all for giving Colt "tools" rather than drafting another QB before we REALLY see what we already have & who among us really has that type knowledge. Two years ago, we obtained one of the more successful GMs in the NFL & he (Heckert) has also done well here. I will trust the moves he makes...After all, I believe his choices will be more informed than ours, & he HAS a history of success.

    Mike

  • The thing about fans of mediocre players and teams is they don't know what they're missing (winning) so mediocrity becomes the standard they become most comfortable with. Drafting RGIII is way too threatening to a fanbase who celebrate mediocrity.

Read many of the posts in this thread and you know what I'm talking about.
