Drafting Claiborne Is Not A Long Term Solution

The Browns Board

  • The top ten highest paid cornerbacks in the NFL in 2011 made from 7.8m #10 to 12m #1.

Joe Haden accounts for 9.7,10.9,10.6 million dollars against the cap in the following three seasons until he is an unrestricted free agent in 2015. Think he's not going to want a raise? Remember who his agent is, look it up if you have to.

Drafting Claiborne in the top 5 would award him with roughly a 4 year 20 million dollar deal with a 5th year team option. If everything goes as it should when taking a cornerback that high he's going to demand 10+ million a year money at the end of his rookie contract.

So yes, the idea of having two shutdown corners is hard not to like. Keeping both of these shutdown corners when they are in their prime however is difficult to pull off.

  • We would get the same situation with Chase Minnifield,

  • yip yap same old crap.

one person likes this guy the other god forbid likes someone else in the draft.

i'm not ant anyone, i just think it's prudent to look at the whole picture of what the problems are with the team and what holes need to be filled.

  • Thats the same with any position.......The reason you draft them is so you don't have to go pay top dollar in free agency

  • either way there'll be joy and sadness next season. joy when the picks the browns make turn out to be great and sadness when a guy we passed on turns out to be the next 'whoever'.

    the ultimate poker game.

  • So is this our #4 pick?

  • We could draft a CB in the 7th who turns out to be great and he is going to demand the same money after his contract is up. It doesn't matter. Anyone you draft at 4, if they turn out great which is what you want will want a large amount of money once they get offered a new contract.

  • Good point but a later round draft pick would most likely be thrilled to sign a long term extension in their second or third year given the opportunity.

The contract would not be an instant 10 million dollar a year deal like it would be if a top 5 pick re-ups.

Bullshit. Any player who is performing is going to ask for a contract to represent how they have been playing, regardless of what round they were drafted in. When contracts are up it not where you were drafted it's how you have performed, period.

  • Yeah because when Anthony Henry intercepted ten balls his rookie year he got a major fuckin payday right? Wrong.

You are trying to say a lower round guy making 500k a year is not going to accept a raise in his second or third year to make say 3-5 million? That he is going to hold out for that big 10 mil a year contract when nothing in life is guarenteed. Now that is bullshit.

Well no one gets a fucking restructured contract after one year in the league. What I am saying is that after 4 years with a 1st round draft pick and 4 years with a 7th round draft pick, both of whom performed exactly the same, will get similar contracts.

  • A late round draft pick who plays well will be offered a long term extension for less than premium money.

    Ahtyba Rubin.

Rubin got a 3 year (not long term) 27 million (9 mill a year, more than premium for his position) dollar contract, sounds about right to me. If he had been drafted first round he would not be making a penny more than he is on his current contract.

  • Rubin is making 6.1 , 7.7 , 6.6 million. That's not premium money and corners get paid more than defensive tackles.

A first round pick comes with a sense of entitlement, ego and big time agents = big time dollars.

That is Rubin's guaranteed money, counting his bonus cash, which he reached this year I'm sure, he gets payed on average 9 mill and he is not where near the long term lock up contract like you claimed he should get. Plus I didn't claim he was getting premium money for players period, I said he was making good money for a DT. Plus that entitlement and ego come with the player, not the draft position and big time agents come with the performance. It is not unheard of for a player drafted later to switch agents when it came time to get a bigger contract.

Point is, it doesn't matter where we draft a CB, if he performs at a high level he is going to demand a lot of money regardless of where he is drafted. Now if your argument is that we can't sink more money into the CB position right now, then that would make more sense.

  • My point is the subjects title, we won't keep both Haden and Claiborne when they are both in their primes so why draft claiborne at 4.

Why ever have more than 1 good CB is what you are saying. Why have any more than the current amount of good players we have now? Regardless of who we draft they will need to be resigned and they will need to be resigned for big money if they are good, so what the hell does it matter. Regardless of who we draft there, if they are good they will demand a lot of money to be resigned, period, regardless of position. Might as well draft another CB since we only have one good one.

  • Okay then let's draft another corner and in a few years we can add another name to the list of first round draft picks who no longer play for the Browns.

Or do. You can make your same lame ass argument for any position. Your argument should be, lets not draft anyone good period, because it they turn out to be good we can't resign them.

  • the RG3 cock slobberers are all going to be pissed so get used to the crying now.
