Pesonally, I like the two running backs idea, but heckert said after the season something about hardesty "being much stronger next year" so I don't think they have given up on him, I think they fully expect Hardesty and Brandon Jackson to be part of the RB equation.

Of course if they draft Richardson that changes everything.

I like the two RB idea as well because I don't believe in Hardesty. I would rather see another RB have a chance to be the guy in Cleveland. I do like Jackson, and I think he will be a great 3rd down back for us. Obbi can go.

Here's something I don't see a lot of people mentioning regarding the #4 pick as well. I think it has to be a offensive player, and Holmgren is noted as being against taking a WR that high in the draft. with that being said, if you ask me I think the browns are looking to trade down possibly with Miami to reach for Tannehill or another team that wants blackmon/Richardson (highly doubt anyone trades up for Claiborne there). IF we could stay in the top ten and get either blackmon or richardson which is quite possible that would be the best scenario.

...but we'll probably trade into the late teens, take a safety no one is expecting and everyone here will talk shit haha.

Actually Holmgren has been quoted as saying he has discouraged Heckert from trading down this year. Hasn't said it won't happen but they are not looking that route unless something pops up like a bad injury or something.

Interesting draft - I like your first two choices... πŸ™„

But if you draft a second wr, it should be Dale Moss. Seriously.

I know, I read this earlier today and I thought about it, but I couldn't realistically think where he would go. With his numbers he could go late 2nd, early 3rd, but because of where he went to school and played he could fall to the 5th or 6th. I'm more familiar with Page having watching him play OSU, BG, and OU and in my complete honest opinion he is going to make some team very happy as a slot WR and return guy. Could be as good as Wes Welker.

    Decent effort.

We agree on Foles in the mid-rounds...

    I'll leave it at that.

I meant to say too I really hope the browns can scoop up eric page in a later round. That guy is an amazing football player who can do about everything on the offensive side of the ball. He's gonna be a good steal for someone who uses him the right way.

  • So apparently I pissed off my roommate again by being too loud making breakfast this morning and waking him up (asshole thinks out living room is his bedroom for some fucking reason) so I have nothing else to do today. I thought I would give a thought out mock draft based on not who I personally want the Browns to pick, but who I think they will pick. My picks are passed on a combination of BPA and needs until round 4 when they will be based souly on BPA.

    Round 1:

Pick #4, Trent Richardson: I would first like to explain why we take Richardson over other players available here such as Blackmon and Claiborne. I think Claiborne very well would be the pick if we had any kind of offensive playmaker, but sadly we don't. We can't afford to not take an offensive skill person with out first pick. Then there is Blackmon. Great player, obviously the best WR in the draft, a great character person. The problem is that there has been talk outside of BL that he openly doesn't want to come to Cleveland. Whether this is true or not it might put Heckert off from picking him and as we know this years draft is very deep at WR. Richardson makes sense here. He is in his own class when it comes to RBs in this draft (even though this position also has a deep pool of talent). The drop off between Richardson and Miller is much bigger than say Blackmon and Floyd/Wright. The only we Richardson isn't the pick here is if Heckert is in love with the 3rd or 4th best RB's in this draft, Wilson and Martin. Richardson has the speed you want in a powerful back, reporting to run under a 4.5 and is a physical freak which really shows on film. On top of that he is also good in pass protection and a good receiver out of the back field.

Pick #22, Stephen Hill: Since RB was addressed with #4, then WR will be addressed with #22. If WR is addressed at #4 then expect RB to be addressed here. There is a few reasons why Hill will more than likely be the pick. Floyd will be gone at this point, Jeffery still has to do his pro day and will likely run a 4.6, Wright isn't the kind of WR H&H like except for the slot position and honestly isn't as fast as people think he is. If Hill isn't the option it will only be because he has less tape on him and that is something Heckert really uses to evaluated a player. But with his production at the combine and pro day, how well he has done in drills, I expect Heckert to go back over his tape and see a very good player. He will give the Browns the tall wide range WR that they like, but also someone with straight line speed.

    Round 2:

Pick #37, Brandon Boykin CB Georgia: Brandon Boykin was a special player at Georgia playing both ways. He is an excellent cover corner in both zone and man and he has the fluid hips and speed you want to see. He also has nice hands and can return kicks. He has 3 INT last season and 3 TD's, 2 receiving and 1 rushing. He is a mid 2nd round talent but we know that Heckert isn't afraid to take someone several spots ahead of where they would go if he likes them. I also wouldn't be surprised to see us take a flyer on OLB Brown if Heckert thinks his issues are behind him or a RT/G since there will certainly be a top guy who should have gone at the end of the first fall to us in the early second.

    Round 3:

Pick #68, Lavonte David LB Nebraska: David is a a physical freak. He has the speed, instincts, and tackle ability that the Browns have been lacking at the OLB position. The knocks on David though are his size and ability to shed blocks. Even though he is not weak, he needs to put on about 10-15 pounds and he needs to be coaches to shed blocks easier. The thing though is that his instincts are good enough that he tends to sneak through before getting blocked more often than not to make the tackle. He is also very good in coverage and has the ability to cover not only TE but quick inside slot recievers. He could easily be gone when the Browns pick but his size has him falling down draft boards. If the Browns don't take a CB in the second expect them to take either Josh Norman or Chase Minnefield here.

    Round 4:

Pick #100 Eric Page WR Toledo: At this point in the draft you start to pick for best player and start to completely ingore need. Eric Pgae will be lucky to fall this far to the Browns because I know there are one or two teams out there that can see this kids talent and could very well take a flier on him in the third. He isn't going to grab your attention with his speed or his size (runs a 4.5 and is around 5-10) but he has some power for such a small WR and he is deadly quick and agile. Think of Norwood but with more college production (even against top defenses) and more talent. He was also one of the best kick/punt returners in the whole NCAA the past two seasons and with Cribbs getting up there in age we need a legit second returner that isn't a starting CB.

Pick #118 Nick Foles QB Arizona: At some point in this draft between the 2nd to 7th round H&H will take a QB to either compete with Colt or to groom. Foles has the kind of body and arm strength that we all want in a QB but lacks accuracy. With time to learn he might develop into a starter or at least a good back up. If they don't go QB here I would expect Heckert to finally pick an offensive linemen (I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see him take one earlier. If that is the case I see us taking Potter from Boise State. He is a great pass protector and has great height for an OL. His only problem is he needs to put on more strength to become a better run blocker so it's good news that he is 6'6" 300 pounds, he has plenty of room to put on more muscle. This would be more of a developmental pick like Pinkston was last year but he is more likely to see the feild without anyone getting injured because of our need at RT.

    Round 5

Pick # 131 Chris Rainey RB/WR/R Flordia: Even if we draft Richardson, he will need a back to take over a few times a game. When you are looking for someone to take over for a power guy like Richardson, you want a speedster to step in. Speed is where Rainey shines with a high 4.3 low 4.4 speed and lighting quick cuts. Richardson and Rainey would be thunder and lighting. The Browns would have their own Sproles.

This is where our picks get dicey. The Vikes get one of our picks for the Mitchel trade, but as far as anyone knows it is undisclosed as of right now. No one knows the terms for what we would need to give the Vikes. It could be as high as a 6th since we resigned him, or nothing since we didn't even use him the year we traded for him (similar to the Greco trade). I would predict that we are giving them a 7th round pick and I am also guessing that we are going to get a 7th round conditional pick so the 7th rounder I put up will be a border line UDFA guy.

    Round 6:

Pick #164 Tom Compton OT South Dakota: Tom Compton has a chance to be one of the better offensive linemen taken in the draft if he can transfer well from AA ball. He was the most dominating OT in Div 1 AA last season and holds plenty of honors for his play. This pick is risky since he is a small school guy but he has everything you look for in a starting T in the NFL. in the 6th round he is worth the risk.

    7th Round:

Conditional Pick: I'm not even going to guess a pick at this spot because it could be damn near anyone, but I will mention a few players we might see taken. There is the MAC stud Chandler Harnish from N Illi who put up big numbers last season with few receiving weapons. Tank Carder OLB from TCU could very well still be available, he has great instincts and could play at either OLB or MLB and then of course at this point of the draft you see the injury parade. Guys who suffered season ending injuries who's stock sharply fell because of it. You have Moss-Page DE from UNC who tore an ACL, had a nice 2011 with 7.5 sacks and is a small speed DE that Heckert likes. Broyles WR from Oklahoma who like Page is a Norwood clone with more production and finally Chris Owusu who missed a lot of last season do to concussions but put up some of the best numbers of any WR at the combine and had a very productive 2010.

    Tell me what you think.

Update: After some pro days, interviews with Heckert and other coaches, plus the addition of 4 late round comp picks, I decided to waste some time on my day with zero classes to make an updated mock draft.

    Round 1:

#4 Trade back with St. Loius for #6 and #65: This trade happens in a scenario where Miami doesn't trade ahead of us with the Vikes. I don't think they will because that give the #3 pick +value because it turns it into a franchise QB pick. Miami would have to give up next years 1st rounder and a mid round pick this year to make the move. They won't trade with us because they know if we are trying to trade, we won't take Tennehill and Heckert isn't the kind of guy who is going to draft someone just to make someone trade with him. This really leaves St. Louis. They really like both Kalil, Blackmon, and even Richardson. If Kalil is there when we pick we WILL get more than their 3rd round (which is actually slightly above value for the move up) because Kalil is the best LT prospect since Jake Long and there will be teams bidding for the move up. But I think the Vikes make the pick for Kalil, we trade back to #6 at value, and the Rams take Blackmon.

#6 Claiborne CB LSU: At this point in the draft Claiborne is a steal. He is projected to be even better than what people were thinking Peterson would be last year and could really have a Haden like rookie season. This pick is based solely on the fact that Tampa will take Richardson. If by some miracle Miami trades up to #5 to take Tannehill, we will be taking Richardson. Also a chance that we trade back to #8 now by scaring Miami from our trade back and possibly getting either Claiborne still or M. Floyd. Regardless I'll just stick with Claiborne here and set Cleveland up to have the best CB duo for at least half a decade.

#22 Johnathan Martin OT Stanford: I really think the Browns are going to be tempted to jump up and grab another guy they like in Mercilus DE, but they are going to remain calm and remember, Hey we need some O. I think they will be looking skill position in this spot. Wilson is surely a guy they have been targeted and only Richardson and Miller should be gone at this point. Wright is also a possibility (being the only WR at this point in the draft that I think they actually like. Heckert won't touch either Hill or Jeffery with a 10 foot pole unless they slid extremely far). Martin though is a top 15 pick who falls to us as #22 because of teams needing more interior help and teams needing outside help picking after us. That makes this pick a possible trade back for a team wanting Martin for his superior pass blocking to play LT, but I think we take him here giving us a good RT and really making our O Line something solid and make is so McCoy gets sacked around 10 times less next season.

    Round 2

#37 Wilson RB VT: I think it is entirely possible for a team to take a flier on Wilson in the 1st or early second before we pick. Several teams at the end of the first could pick for value and grab him while the Colts who are ahead of us might be looking for something more solid in the run game to support Luck. St. Loius is only looking at Richardson because well it's Richardson and I think the Colts do what teams normally do when taking QB and take a WR in Randel LSU and that will leave us with Wilson. Wilson's numbers from last season can't be ignored and they rivaled those of top RB Richardson. He also has a blazing 40 time of 4.4 which is just as good as several 3rd down undersized backs in this draft, only he has legit every down starter size. His only knock is that he is a one year starter and is reported to have constantly wined and complained to coaches about his playing time before last season. But with his production it appears warranted and with only 1 season starting he still has plenty of tread on the tires.

    Round 3

#65 From St. Louis Chris Givens WR Wake Forrest: Now all we need to complete our offensive revamp is a good WR. What does everyone want. A fast guy with decent height who can catch the damn ball, hopefully with some actual college production to back it up. That is Chris Givens. He had a great season with 80+ catches for 1300 yards. He timed around a high 4.3 to a 4.4 flat in the 40 at the combine and put up other great numbers in the vert and bench press. This is the only guy with what everyone wants, so might as well take him.

#67 Brock Osweiler QB Arizona State: The Browns are going to take a QB at some point and they are going to try and take a guy who they won't be pressured to start and who that shows the ability to be a great QB if he can be groomed correctly. That to me screams Brock. He had a good season at Arizon, is surprising mobile in the pocket for such a tall guy, has a cannon arm, and it also surprising accurate. His only real knocks are he is messed up mechanics, reminding some of Tebow, and he has limited starting experience. Those last two things can be fixed with time and coaching. Solid pick in round 3, especially since we have two picks in this round.

    Round 4

#100 Nigel Bradham LB Flordia St: This guy was the leading tackler for FS two years in a row at OLB. He has good speed at 4.6 and can cover any TE he is matched up against and he is also solid against the run. With Fujita possible missing games and getting too old anyway Bradham can literally step in and start ate WLB and do a better job as a 4th round pick. I think this guy is going to have a very solid career with 1 or 2 possible pro bowl appearances and he is a steal.

#118 Ladarius Green TE Louisiana-Lafayette: This guy is this years physical freak TE. I know we have 5 TE on the roster right now and I know 4 of them are expected to make the final roster. I have this guy being taken here because of the serious interest Heckert has shown in the guy. Why has he shown interest? It could be because of a multitude of reasons. Watson coming off a 3 concussion year. Moore butting heads with Shurmer and showing an unwillingness to improve his run blocking, insurance encase Cameron doesn't develop, or to simply replace to only average blocking and well below average receiving Alex Smith.

    Round 5

#139 Dale Moss WR South Dakota State: This is one of those boom or bust small school prospects we have all been hearing about and he plays a position that Heckert will be double dipping at, especially since we don't take our first WR until round 3. Moss is a raw prospect who played basketball for 4 years at SDS and only 1 year playing football. Last season he lead the Jack Rabbits in receiving with just under 1000 yards. His knocks are obvious. Played Div II ball and only played for one year. His positives are great. Great range at 6-3 with a 42 inch vert, good speed at 4.45, and very solid hands. His biggest point though is posting a 4.08 in the short shuttle and a 6.3 in the 60 yard cone drill. Those are numbers you see small guys like Wright posting, not big guys like Moss. To translate, those drills show how quick he is off of cuts and off the line, meaning he should get good separation on his routes. Could be a 5th round steal.

#160 Lucas Nix G/T Pittsburg: Getting a G/T in the 5th last year worked for us so we might as well do it again. Nix is very versatile, playing right guard and both tackle positions over the course of last season. He could very well go in the 4th but I have also seen people have him taken in the 6th so it is very possible for us to get him here. If Heckert was familar with Pinkston last year he should have already had a look at this guy. Nix and Pinkston G/T combo on the right could work great since they are already used to working with each other.

    Round 6

#204 Moss-Page DE NCU: I had us taking him in the 6th the first time around and nothing changes. A real boom or bust type of guy. Needs an attitude change and a chance to play healthy, other than that a great DE talent in the 6th.

#205 Chandler Harnish QB N Illi: As mentioned in my previous mock, this guy is a Mac stud. 64% completion percentage, 2500+ yards, 21 TD to only 5 INT. A good 6th round QB to develope into a back up/potential start/future trade bait. Wallace should be out the building anyway with his attitude. Heckert personally doesn't have and ties to Wallace and Holmgren can't always pull rank to keep his favorite bet in the building. Besides, Lewis makes a better potential back up going into his 3rd season under Shurmers offense. Harnish makes the practice squad the Browns go with 4 QB's on the active roster.

    7th round:

IDK. We are talking about boarder line Mr. Irrelevant's here. probably 2 guys who should have gone in round 3 or 4 but fell. I bumped some guys I mentioned who could be taken here to round 6 just cause we had the picks too. Broyles and Owusu are possible pick ups here because of their injuries last season.

  • Update: After some pro days, interviews with Heckert and other coaches, plus the addition of 4 late round comp picks, I decided to waste some time on my day with zero classes to make an updated mock draft.

    Round 5

    7th round:

Saw the list of guys we invited for private workouts. What surprised me the most we had 1a and 1b guys for both the RB and the QB position (guys like Richardson, the Va Tech RB, Pead, Tannehill, Cousins and Weeden) Looks like just Blackmon at WR.

I hope we take Richardson. If not- lets move down acquire more picks this year and next year and make a run at a real franchise QB.

I think there are two trade downs that exist. The Jags at #7- with us- to take Claiborne who will go top 5 whether its us, a trade partner or the Bucs.

At 7 we are in an interesting position- Miami may take Tannehill- the Chiefs are interested- and in a position where Cassel is not a long term option and they have Rivers and Manning in their division. Could see us moving from 7 to 11.

Could get 2 2nd rounders this season and 2 2nd rounders next year- still be in line to take a guy like Floyd, keep the 22nd and have 3 second roun picks this year.

I'll be the first to admit that this mock draft WILL NOT HAPPEN based solely on the fact the guy has us taking people about 1-2 rounds after they are projected to be picks, you know and he actually has us take Burfict who we won't even talk to when he becomes an UDFA.
