Schizophrenic Cities
-
I know this is a subject I touched upon a couple of years ago, but I thought I might revisit it again as we have new patrons here.
As you may all know the NFL establishes a team's "natural market" as being anything within a 75 mile radius of the team's home stadium (I believe that is how it is measured). So from with that 75 mile radius each team's home fan base is generally established...and that is also that radius they use to determine if a game should be blacked out.
And either within or just outside that 75 mile radius (say 100 miles or so), there are in fact a few cities that are essentially equidistant from 2 different teams, so the question of the natural loyalties of the citizens of those cities can be divided...thus the schizophrenia aspect. Following is a list of "Inside cities" and "Outside Cities". The Inside cities are within 75 miles of two different teams. The Outside cities are about equidistant from 2 or more teams, but just outside the 75 mile radius of either. (I count Giants/Jets as one)
Inside cities:
1. Youngstown, Ohio, probably the most famous one about 60 miles from bot CLE and PIT.
2. Sandusky, Ohio, equidistant (crow fly) from DET and CLE
3. Richmond, Ind. within the 75 miles of both CIN and INDY
4. Wilmington and Dover Delaware within both BALT and PHIL radius
5. Central New Jersey falls within both PHIL and NYC 75 mile radius
6. The Baltimore-Washington overlap. Most of these teams market radius overlap as they are only 35 miles apart. It would be like having one team in Akron and another in Cleveland.
7. The Bay area overlap. Most of the OAK and SF market areas overlap.
8. NYC, as mentioned, two teams in one stadium
Outside cities:
1. Hartford Conn., about 100 miles from both NE and NY
2. Cumberland Md., @90 miles from both PIT and BALT
3. Harrisburg Pa.. @80 miles from both BALT and Philly
4. Erie Pa. is about 90 miles each from CLE/PIT/BUFF
5. Columbus, Ohio is just outside the radius of both CLE and CIN
6. Findlay, Ohio is equidistant about from DET/CLE/CIN
7. FT. Wayne Ind. is about 125-150 miles from all three of CHI/DET/IND
8. Milwaukee is about 90 miles from CHI and 110miles from GB
9. Grand Rapids/Kalamazoo Mich. is equidistant from DET and CHI as the crow flies
10. Louisville Ky. is about 100 miles equidistant from both CIN and IND.
11. Chattanooga Tn. is right in the middle between ATL and Nashville where TN plays
12. Greenville SC is close to equidistant from ATL and Carolina
13. Orlando/Daytona Beach are just outside the radius of TB and JAX
14. Ft. Meyers/Naples are about equidistant from MIA and TB
15. Columbia/Jefferson City Mo. are about 120 from both STL and KC
16. Springfield Ill. is between CHI and ST.L
17. Eau Claire Wisc. is between MINN and GB
18. Austin TX is 167 miles from HOU and 190 Miles from DALL.
So, the real question is, who do the majority of people in these cities and areas root for since they are about even between two or more teams?
One I know about from experience and that is the fact that Milwaukee is Packer country, no ifs, ands or buts. Ballpeen and Zombo could probably tell us about Chattanooga and Ft.Meyers/Naples respectively.
What about the other towns? Do some blow with the wind, i/e do the FRAK off and go with who is winning, or what?

I can't stand all the front running Steeler fans here on the Outer Banks. I bet half of all football fans down here are Steeler fans, 25% are Redskin fans and 20% Panther fans. The other 5% are the "others". There is actually a Steeler bar down here which I was thrown out of twice. Bunch of tards.

Well, the outer banks is not one of the areas on that list, but do you think the people you are talking about are transplanted Pittsburghers, or just FRAKS?
If they were true Steeler fans, a couple of losing seasons wouldn't change anything. But if they were FRAKs, you might find them replaced with Cowboy bars or by whomever is winning....or even Browns bars if they start winning.
Even with all the losing the Browns have huge followings in a lot of places.

This article is a couple of years old, but it may still be illustrative. And I know from having my sister-in-law near San Antonio, and my daughter about to attend college there, that that area is still Cowboy country.
Not sure how that would change if the Texans, who seem to be becoming a power, should start to prevail:

I grew up on the west side of Cleveland and then moved to Toledo during highschool and was like why the hell does everyone root for the Tigers and Lions up here...you go into a walmart or dicks and you don't see a single Browns item...just tigers, Flyers and Lions crap.
-
I grew up and live in Youngstown... I have watched the Steelers population grow steadily of the past 12 seasons. It is sad to see, but when the Browns start winning (one of these days) you'll see the fans start to come out of the woodwork.
Basically almost 65-70% of the area are Browns fans, but you have to remember - 75% of Steelers fans wardrobe is Steelers gear, so it seems like there's more of them than there are...
However, if the Browns don't start winning soon, Youngstown will turn into a Pukesburgh fan infested sh**hole. But, they'll all still be Indians fans.
Go Browns!!!

I went to college at Toledo. It's mostly Detroit fans up there b/c it's closer; however, this is the HUGEST split of Michigan and Ohio State fans I've ever seen in one city. I loved being up there during college football season for that rivalry.

Yea just shootin the shit. Some transplants but many front runners. Have no beef with the transplants, it's the bandwagon fags that will root for the Cowboys next time they win a Superbowl.

live above nyc and for the most part the split goes like this: mets/jets or yankees/giants. probably because the jets and mets used to play in the same stadium at one time. my best friend is an exception to the rule and loves the mets and giants.
jealous of him during football season but no so much during the baseball season. GO TRIBE!!
we've also got our fair share of front-runnin steeler and cowboy fans here too. and man do the majority of the people let them have it when the giants beat up the cowboys. most leave before they break down in tears.

On one note of the above, see where I observed that Findlay Oh. is equidistant between Detroit, Cleveland and Cincinnati. And of course we all know who a denizen of Findlay, but it is my understanding that he "grew up" as a 49er fan. What kind of a FRAK is that?
And of course there is that putz from Akron fucking Ohio whose initials can be "Little Blow Job". He was sucking the cum of the Yankees/Cowboys/Bulls. Of course his problem was no male role model in his life, so it is no wonder he would be a Front Runner Ass Kisser.

Falcon roots run deep, but the Titans now own Chattanooga. They locked up the good radio station and do a better hob of marketing the the team even though Atlanta is about 30 miles closer.
But it's not like the people have dumped the Falcons. Being in different conferences, both teams are followed, but all in all, Chattanooga is a Titans town. If nothing else, the in state thing made the difference.

My hometown, 30 miles north of Cbus, is predominately Browns/Tribe country. Of course we have a small scattering of Bengals
and Steelers misguided baffoons but for the most part Cleveland dominates, as it should. Of course, Ohio State football is the
king around here, but that's a topic for a different discussion. The Cbus media evenly splits coverage of Browns/Bengals and is
fair in their determintation of who gets tv coverage on football sundays. 30 miles south of cbus you enter heavy pockets of
bengal roooter with dispersed regions of squeeler supporters who ended up in southern ohio after their misguided
attempt to locate appalachain pa. Their double wides can be found on the fringe of most larger county
towns and their steeler stickered vehicles are easily spotted outside their places of employment, usually
Subway or Mcdonalds. North of the border, the english language is spoken as intended with some local dialect.
Down in Bengal county you hear a lot on monosyllabic, gutteral, pidgen hickspeak. Even in my homtown you
can spot a steeler fan sporting their colors in a trip about town. I have instructed my young sons that
under no circumstance are they to communicate with any of these type people. We need to properly instuct
the younger generations in their dealings with squeeler fans. It is our duty as Browns supporters.

I was talking to this guy today who stoped over my buddies house in Warren Ohio and come to find out his aunt just died and they buried her in a Steelers jersey.
He said he was a Steelers fan to but he lived in Ohio his whole life. I told him I could never root for a team that's outside of Ohio and his reply was something like this. "How could you root for the Browns if you never lived in Cleveland"?
I told him I did live in Cleveland up until I was 10 years old so he shut up. It seems to me that he thinks its ok to root for Pissburgh because he doesnt live in Cleveland or something along those lines. It was pretty sad.

It seems like the younger generation likes to rebel against whatever they're parents like so watch out because they might just start to root for the Steelers just to piss you off one day lol.

That reminds me of Eminem the rap singer. He openly stated that growing up and even now he's a fan of the Cowboys because "they used to be really good". lmao

I'm in CT, which is smack dab in between Boston and New York. The football fan base is roughly 50% Giants, 40% Patriots, 5% Jets and 5% everyone else.

Oh, I have in fact run into any number of "contrarian" personalities who only take on what they claim is "loyalty" to say, the Steelers, because their parents or all their friends were Browns fans....and they have some deep psychosis that impels them to "root for" the enemy
I mean, its not like these guys could have rebelled and become fans of the Chiefs, or Saints or Charger or Falcons. The HAD to become Steeler fans because the Steelers were the hated rivals. And the thing is, thay are not really Steeler fans, but anti-Browns fans.

Curious as to why so few fans of The Jets?
My pereception is as you say, Connecticut is Giants country.
But I also an under the impression that New Jersey is more Jets.

Just wait until our new "throwback" uniforms go viral, everyone will be converting to our fan base, or lose their memory.

Or, more likely lose their lunch?
