Oh, and the Rose Bowl is incorrect. My source says that it has never been the home field for an NFL team.

San Diego Chargers played a "home game" at the home of the Arizona Cardinals due to the brush fires in San Diego. I believe they played the Dolphins in the game. Qualcomm was being used for people who had been evacuated from their homes. I want to say the year was 2006.

Long Island would be another right answer, but not the only other right answer.

I'm not adept at a lot of this kind of stuff, but with this being the worst possible time of the year for a football fan, this trivia stuff is most appreciated.

I would hope that even if some people don't attempt to answer the questions that they at least look at the final posting when I give the answers so that they can learn some interesting tidbits.

Example: When looking this stuff up, I learned that while the Cleveland Rams played their first year at Muni, they also played home games at League Park and at the East Cleveland Shaw High School Field. (OK I gave up one of the answers). It is curious to speculate as to why they would have played at those sites and not just stayed at Muni. I suspect venue size and the cost of opening up the huge stadium had something to do with it....plus it was probably during WWII when those moves were made, so that may have had something to do with it..

Here is some trivia about stadiums used by current NFL teams throughout history:

    Answers:

    1. What was the first stadium that the New York Jets fka Titans played their first home games in?

The Polo Grounds in upper Manhattan, which was still there in the Jets initial 1960 season.

    2. What was the first stadium that the New York Giants played their home games in?

This too was The Polo Grounds back in the Giants initial 1925 season.

The NY Baseball Giants also played at the Polo Grounds. Recall the famous Willie Mays catch off Vic Wertz was in the Polo Grounds. What I am not sure of is if they ever played Polo there.

    3. Which 3 Ivy League schools stadiums served as the home field for an NFL team at one time or another?

The Giants played 2 years at The Yale Bowl when Giants Stadium was being built.

The Pats played the 1970 season at Harvard Stadium.

The Eagles played from 1958 to 1970 at Franklin Field which is on and owned by the University of Pennsylvania (Penn)

    4. What was the first stadium that the Rams played their first home games in?

The Rams played their first year at Cleveland Municipal Stadium...but also played seasons at League Park and Shaw stadium.

    5. The earliest ever built stadium used by a current NFL team for their home games was built in 1881, but was not occupied by that NFL team until the period from 1960-1965. What was the city and the name of the stadium?

The Stadium was Sportsman Park in St. Louis, built in 1881 and occupied by the football Cardinals when they moved to St. Louis. It was then known as Busch Stadium I.

The second oldest ever stadium played in by an NFL team was the Baker Bowl in Philly, built in 1887.

Three other stadiums were the home of NFL teams that were built in 1891: League Park, the Polo Grounds, and the Wisconsin State Fair grounds Stadium where the Packers played regularly at some point. I am not certain, but it is possible that League Park is the only one of these that remains today, though the Fairgrounds are still there..

    6. Which stadium that has been used as an official home field of an NFL team has/had the largest capacity?

The LA Coliseum may not only be the largest capacity stadium in NFL history with a 101, 574 official capacity, it may have also been the stadium that more NFL teams called home than any other. The LA Rams played there for years, as did the Raiders during their tenure in LA, and the "LA Chargers" as they were first known had their home in the Colisseum.

The runnerup is the Jerry Dome: the new Dallas Cowboy stadium which has a 100,000 capacity.

(This does not include 1 time uses by teams of a field, like Azteca Stad. or Wembly Park)

    7. There are only 6 NFL teams that have never played official home games in a stadium that was ever occupied at one time by a MLB team. Name these 6 teams.

The Texans, Jaguars, Panthers, Cowboys, Saints, and Bucs have never played in a stadium that was ever the home to a MLB team. All others have. I will give some more data in a later post.

    8. On three occasions in history an NFL team has had to play one of its home games in the stadium of another NFL team due to natural or other circumstances. Name the three teams and the three fields they played their home away from home game in.

Two were mentioned: the Saints moved their home game from New Orleans to Giants Stadium on 9/19/05. They then played the balance of their season in the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Also on 10/27/03 the Chargers moved their home game to Sun Devil Stadium, then home of the Cardinals due to the wild fires that engulfed that area.

The other occasion was the most recent: on 12/13/2010 due to the collapse from snow of the Metrodome roof the Viking moved their home game to Ford Field in Detroit, home of the Lions.

Other games have been moved due to weather, but only these 3 were moved to a "rival" NFL teams home field. I think it became the policy of the NFL to protect their owners economic interests by moving games to NFL fields in order to reap parking, concessions etc. revenue from a game. Though certainly there were other times when games were moved to non-NFL stadia. The Vikings that same year moved a game to the TCF Bank Field...or better known as The Gopher Hole...i.e. the Univ. of Minnesota's home field. As mentioned the Saints moved to the Alamodome after Katrina. The 49ers moved a game to Stanford Stadium after the 1989 World Series (Loma Prieta) Earthquake.

Perhaps most famously, the 1932 NFL Championship game between the Bears and the Portsmouth Spartans was moved inside into Chicago Stadium due to weather. That is the game where the field was only 80 yards long.

    9. In 1970 with the merger and the explosion of TV interest the NFL came out with a rule that all NFL stadiums had to have a minimum capacity of 50,000. One team had to move its home games as a result of this rule. Which team?

The Bears had to move out of Wrigley Field. For a bit they moved to Dyche Stadium, but then finished the 1970 season at Wrigley. But the next year they had to relocate to Soldier Field.

    10. Which of the following cities/states/boroughs have the New York Giants NOT had their home games held in at some point in time: Bronx, Brooklyn, Connecticut, Long Island, Manhattan, New Jersey, Queens, Staten Island.

The Giants have NOT played in Brooklyn, Staten Island, and Long Island.

They have played in Manhattan/Polo Grounds, Bronx/Yankee Stadium, Connecticut/Yale Bowl, New Jersey/Giants Stad. MetLife Stad., and Queens/Shea Stadium.

Technical note: though Queens is on Long Island, when people refer to Long Island they generally mean that part of that Island that is not part of NYC, either Queens or Brooklyn

    11. There are two teams which in their histories have only ever played their home games in one stadium. Which are these two teams?

The Jags have only ever played in the refurbished Gator Bowl, which has had several names: Jacksonville Municipal/Alltell/Eversavegreenreadywhateveritisnow.

The Texans have only ever played in Reliant Stadium.

Several teams are tied with having played in 6 stadiums including the Giants/Pats/Packers/Cardinals.

The Browns have played every single one of their home games on the same field....at CBS which was built up around the field, and Muni. before that.

    12. Name the NFL team that at one time played their games in the stadium with the following names:

    A. Shaw Stadium East Cleveland Shaw HS...Rams

    B. Universal Stadium This was the stadium in Portsmouth OH where the Spartans nka Detroit Lions played.

    C. The Baker Bowl. Eagles

    D. Alumni Stadium In Chestnut Hill Mass, home field of Boston College...Patriots

    E. Jeppeson Stadium The original stadium in Houston where the Oilers/Titans began play.

    F. Balboa Stadium Chargers

    G. Hagermeister Park Original park the Packers played in.

    H. Frank Howard Field This is the name of the field at Clemson Stadium where the Panthers played their first year.

    I. Houlihan Stadium Better known as The Big Sombrero in Tampa.

    J. Normal Park The original field in Chicago that the Cardinals played at. In fact, the Cardinals were originally called The Normals after their field.

    K. TCF Bank Stadium This is the Univ. Of Minnesota stadium the Vikings played in after the roof collapse.

    L. Dyche Stadium This is the stadium the Bears moved to for a while after that edict noted above in 1970. This is Northwestern Univ.'s field.

    18. The Packers regularly played 3 home games at Milwaukee Co. Stadium, used by both Braves and Brewers

    19. Vikings and Twins shared both the Metrodome and old Metropolitan Stadium. (now site of the Mall of America)

    20. Falcons and Braves shared Atlanta Fulton Co. Stadium

    21. Cardinals as noted played in Busch I. as did Cards and St.L. Browns. When in Chicago they played at Comiskey park

    22. The Rams shared the Big A in Anaheim with the Angels.

    24. Seahawks and Mariners both played The Kingdome

    25. The Oakland Raiders and the As still both play the OCO stadium, fka The Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. Since the new Marlins Park opened up, this is now, I believe the ONLY remaining dual NFL/MLB stadium in the Bigs.

The Bucs have played in the Big Sombrero and the New Sombrero. The Rays have only ever played at The Trop where the Bucs never played.

There has never been a MLB team in Jax, Charlotte, or New Orleans to occupy any of those fields.

The Texans are so new they were given their own new, NFL exclusive stadium...as were the Astros.

The Cowboys have played in The Cotton Bowl, Texas Stadium, and now Cowboy Stadium. The Rangers have never played in any of those parks.
