Potential

  • Our team has a lot of potential... to either BOOM or BUST. Here are some comparisons of some of our new guys, based on measurables and draft positions.

    Trent Richardson - 1st round, #3 overall, RB, 5'9" 228 lbs, 4.45 40-time, 5.9 YPC junior year at Alabama

    BOOM: Ladanian Tomlinson - #5 overall - TCU, 5'10" 221 lbs, 4.46 40-time, 5.9 YPC junior year at TCU

LT had better college stats, but could be said b/c of lesser competetion and worse QB play at that time from TCU QB.

    BUST: Ki-Jana Carter - #1 overall - Penn St, 5'10" 226 lbs, 7.8 YPC junior year

We all know this one. Career cut short due to injury. Hopefully not the fate of our new guy.

    Brandon Weeden - 1st round, #22 overall, QB, 6'4" 221 lbs, 28 years old

BOOM: Mix between Dan Marino - Drafted #27 overall with similar measurables, and Kurt Warner - Made his first NFL start at age 27.

BUST: Chris Weinke - Not drafted until the 4th round, but at similar age, and played pro baseball before entering the NFL. 6'4", 235. Cannon arm, but never developed into an NFL QB.

    Mitchell Schwartz - 2nd round, #37 overall, OT, 6'5" 318 lbs, California

BOOM: Matt Light - 2nd round, #48 overall, OT, 6'4" 305 lbs, Purdue

(or Jon Jansen - Redskins - made 51 consecutive starts in college @ Michigan)

BUST: Hard to find a real bust at OT around this draft position. Many of the guys drafted here were journeymen lineman, but seemed to overall have good NFL careers. A lot of average talent. Many of these guys switched to G before finding their niche - Flozell Adams for example.

Josh Gordon - 2nd round (supplemental), WR, 6'3" 224 lbs

Only really one comparison - Rob Moore - 1990 supplemental draft (1st round) - Played for the NY Jets. 6'3" 202 lbs. 2 time pro-bowler in 1994 w/ the Jets and 1997 w/ the Cardinals.

Travis Benjamin - 4th round, #100 overall, WR, 5'10" 175 lbs, Miami (Fl)

BOOM: Steve Smith (CAR) - 3rd round, #74 overall, WR, 5'9", Utah

Similar size and college stats; however, Smith was more sought after coming out of college

Other comparisons include: Yancey Thigpen, Derrick Mason, Tim Dwight)

    BUST: Craig Yeast - 4th round, #98 overall (1999), WR, 5'7" 165 lbs, Kentucky

Played 3 years in the NFL for Bengals. Best year was 301 receiving YDS, 0 TDs.

Was a KR/PR specialist for 2 of those 3 years he played w/ 2 return TDs.

Other comparisons include: Ryne Robinson, Eric Crouch, Danny Farmer, and many more

Just think, we may have added LT, Marino, Light, Moore, and Smith to our roster, OR

Carter, Weinke, journeyman OT, nobody WR, and Yeast.

Or more likely a combination of those 2 lists.

    Thoughts???

  • I love the comparisons. Of course we'll never know until the games are played but its nice to think about some of our draft picks booming like in your examples.

Training camp in a few days.. so stoked for this season

  • great list of comparisons. i would've thrown in the josh gordon/michael irvin comparison just for giggles. but it's kinda hard to crack on a guy that you want to work out in the biggest way.

the season start? hell i can't wait for training camp......just to get some in-depth looks at how our picks, squads, coaching and everything in between is looking from some of our forum members sideline reviews.

i want to know everything. let's get this thing going!
