Senior Bowl

A couple months ago, Scott Wright put up a post on his blog about Mr. Spin Move, Missouri's Evander "Ziggy" Hood:
There is a chance that the senior defensive tackle class won't produce a single first round pick next April but that doesn't mean there won't be some very good football players available. One guy who I like a lot is Missouri's Evander Hood.
Had he entered the 2008 NFL Draft after his junior season the NFL's Underclassmen Advisory Panel felt "Ziggy" would have been a third round pick and that may be a worst-case scenario for him in 2009. In terms of measurables Hood is more than adequate across the board at 6-3 and 295 lbs. with 5.00 speed but it's his quickness, intangibles and motor that really set him apart. Simply put, this guy never lets up and it's that hustle, toughness and intensity that allow him to make so many plays in pursuit. Just to give you an idea about his work ethic in the weight room, "Ziggy" has added 40-45 pounds to his frame since he first set foot on the Mizzou campus in '05.
Hood most likely projects as a three-technique at the next level [translation: penetrating one-gap 4-3 DT -Alo] and while not many are talking about him as a first round possibility I think he could be right on the fringe when all is said and done. In fact, if I were Bill Polian and the Indianapolis Colts I'd be looking very closely at Hood. He may not be flashy or get a lot of pub on the national level but "Ziggy" is one of the best senior defensive tackles in the country and in my opinion he should compete with guys like Peria Jerry and Terrance Taylor for the top spot in the months leading up to the 2009 Draft.
Since then, B.J. Raji has surged and Terrance Taylor regressed. Jerry likely will be the first three-technique taken, but Hood made a strong case today that he should be the second.
nfldraftscout projects that he'll be a 2nd Round pick.

Some players Browns scouts spoke to today:
- Max Unger, C, Oregon (Projected: late Round 1/early Round 2)
- Eric Wood, C, Louisville (Round 3)
- Keenan Lewis, CB, Oregon State (late Round 2/early Round 3)
- Shawn Nelson, TE, Southern Miss (Round 5)
-
BC d-lineman Ron Brace's marginal athleticism showed up in the stack and shed drill. He's probably limited to playing NT in the pro's.
Conversely, Iowa's Mitch King looked like a linebacker out there - not surprising, given that was King's position before he packed on forty pounds to play DT. I wonder if he could drop weight and be a serviceable 3-4 linebacker.
Cody Brown and Larry English looked like guys capable of making the transition to 3-4 OLB. Mike Mayock said he's been "intrigued" by what he's seen of English. The Browns sent a lot of scouts out to Northern Illinois games this year; he could be a target of ours in early Round 2.
-
Marcus Freeman is struggling getting off TE/FB blocks in one on one drills.
-
Oregon State CB Keenan Lewis has been looking great. I'd say his chances of being a Brown next year are slightly higher than DA's.
Brian Robiskie can't get separation. He couldn't beat a slow CB (Macho Harris) or a safety (Patrick Chung).

Interesting about the centers. The Browns clearly feel that Fraley is toast.Yeah, though it could we that the guy we draft will play RG for a year before sliding in to center. I think the Panthers did something similar with Ryan Kalil.
-
Just saw Marcus Freeman get blocked out of a play by receiver Juaquin Iglesias (6'1", 204 lbs.). Dude doesn't shed blocks well.
-
Safety Louis Delmas has looked good today, making a nice hit in one on ones and deflecting a pass in 11 on 11's. According to Brent Sobleski, Delmas was also great on Monday:
Some eyes should have been opened with the play of Delmas today. The Western Michigan product made good reads throughout the day, covered well in the slot, and broke on the ball extremely well from his safety position.
-
It's odd how Cody Brown can't get around Phil Loadholt in one on one's, but he doesn't seem to have any problem beating him in full scrimmage.
-
Ziggy Hood destroyed Alex Mack with his patented spin move.
-
Purdue DT Alex Magee is looking good. He's an interesting mid-round 3-4 DE prospect.
Cody Brown bull-rushed the hell out of former teammate William Beatty, but Beatty stopped him the next time.
-
B.J. Raji took out two blockers on a run play, allowing linebacker Scott McKillop to make a tackle behind the line of scrimmage.
Love both of those players. Unfortunately, Raji's a 3-4 NT (we've already got Shaun Rogers), and McKillop isn't a good fit for playing inside in a 3-4.
-
Culling from various sources, here are some guys our scouts talked to on Monday:
- B.J. Raji, NT, Boston College (Round 1)
- Max Unger, C, Oregon (late Round 1/early Round 2)
- Eric Wood, C, Louisville (Round 3)
- Kraig Urbik, OG-OT, Wisconsin (late Round 2/early Round 3)
- Andy Levitre, OG, Oregon State (Round 3)
- William Moore, S, Missouri (late Round 1/early Round 2)
- Patrick Chung, S, Oregon (Round 2)
- Keenan Lewis, CB, Oregon State (late Round 2/early Round 3)
- Zack Follett, LB, Cal (late Round 3/early Round 4)
- Shawn Nelson, TE, Southern Miss (Round 5, but he's making a case to go higher)
- Cedric Peerman, RB, Virginia (late Round 5/early Round 6)
- Nathan Brown, QB, Central Arkansas (Round 5)

Nice little blurb about the safety prospects:
Among safeties, David Bruton (Notre Dame) displayed better lateral movement than William Moore (Missouri), who actually looked more like a linebacker. Both are good closers when a play is in front of them. Oregon's Patrick Chung is a bit more versatile, looking smooth for his position in drills and able to play in the box without fear. Louis Delmas (Western Michigan) also exhibited sideline-to-sideline range as a free safety.
Delmas is a guy to watch; I've only heard positive things about him.

Nice little blurb about the safety prospects:I keep coming back to Chung...he is versatile, has the headhunter instincts of a Polamalu...and slightly better size.
I am not sure why he is still 2nd round material, as he supposedly has good speed as well.

some people don't trust chung because they think he's too small. he's listed at 5'11" and 207 and people wonder if he can hold up in the NFL and if he'll be able to cover the larger TEs in the league.
any slight deficiency, especially for a guy whose position requires that he have excellent size and speed and be a hybrid LB/CB who can stuff the run, rush the passer and cover, is going to drop a guy's draft stock.
which is good news for the team that gets him. chung's a gamer and possibly the best prospect in this class, though it seems like delmas is closing in on him.

Like I said, he is Polamalu's size. Polly is 5'10" and 207 now...so Chung is taller and can still fill out a bit. Anyway, I have been on his bandwagon (along with Lucky at RB) for a while. Hope we snag him in Rd 2.

5'11" and 207 and pretty close to average for an NFL FS....Beathea, Reed, Nelson, Wilson, Dawkins, Rolle, Griffin.
All these Guys are in the 5'10" to 6' range and are around 200 lbs.
