A few things you should know:

    1. The Cleveland Browns have 8 titles, only the Packers and Bears have more

    2. The Browns under Paul Brown and Otto Graham appeared in 10 consecutive championship games. 4 in the AAFC, all victories, and 6 straight after joining the NFL, splitting them 3-3. No pro football team has ever appeared in 6 consecutive title games as the Browns did in the NFL so much as 10 straight.

    3. The Dolphins are NOT the only team to go undefeated untied in a season. The Browns did it in 1948.

    4. Jim Brown is considered the greatest player in football history, only Jerry Rice gets some talk in that category.

    5. Northeast Ohio has won the most football titles of any metro region in the nation, tied with Green Bay.

    6. There is a reason the Pro Football Hall of Fame is in Northeast Ohio, the NFL was founded here.

    7. Cleveland is the only city to keep its franchise after the attempted move by a greedy owner.

    8. And note: the Cleveland Browns franchise NEVER left Cleveland. That team in Baltimore was NEVER the Cleveland Browns. It was a new franchise created by the NFL, it was NOT a "moved" franchise", thus it is totally unlike the Colts, Cardinals, Titans, Rams, and others that have moved. The Browns never moved.

    9. The Browns have the largest organized fan base in the sport. Maybe not the largest following, but the largest fan base.

    10. The Steelers suck, be most assured of that. A large portion of their fan base are FRAKS...FrontRunnerAssKissers who will abandon them after a year or two of losing.

    11. Brown and Orange are the colors of fall, the colors of dirt and jack o lanterns, the colors of football.

    12. Browns fans don't need logos/cheerleaders/mascots. They just need a good football team, finally.

    13. Browns fans are the most loyal fans in the NFL, to a fault perhaps. Only maybe the Packers fans can compete with them on that score.

There is a Baker's dozen to get you started. If you need more data, feel free to ask.

So are the Steelers your biggest rival now? O knew they were before Art Modell "moved" the team to Baltimore but I thought that might have boosted them to your biggest rival

Most Browns fans consider the Steelers the biggest rival, but most Steelers fans see the Browns as an afterthought. We've only beaten them 5 times since returning to the league in 99. The Browns franchise is storied, as Gipper has pointed out, but for young fans like me, all I've ever known was the Belichick years (where he made his mistakes before transcending human existence in New England), followed by Modell moving the team (and not caring about football for 3 years), then the return of our dysfunctional franchise with a front office carousel. Hopefully this regime gets it right. I'm a huge fan, but really, the history of the franchise doesn't do much for me. The videos I posted, while funny, pretty much sum up the majority of autumn Sundays.

It's just been two decades of disappointments and let downs.

I don't have to convince myself of anything. These are simple, actual facts, like 2+2=4. And as I understood it, the guy wanted facts.

Do you dispute any of these facts?

Edit: OK, maybe the "Steelers Suck" is an opinion...but an enlightened one πŸ˜›

The Steelers were never not the Browns biggest rival. The Ravens, while worthy of scorn and disparagement, were never our big rival. We hated a couple people associated therewith, i.e, Modell and son, but that team was never on a par with the Steelers. It would be like a guy who had a life long rivalry with a brother, who then acquired an insipid bastard stepchild. There may be justifiable disrespect for that bastard, but the enmity he holds for his life feud partner is still paramount. You have respect, and even a little admiration for your brother, none for the bastard.

Edit: And at this point, though the Ravens may still be bastards, they are no longer our stepchild as we have divorced their mother (with Modell's death), and they are just another entity out there that we have to put up with.

I am 61. In my conscious Life I can only remember the 1964 title. Too young for the mid-50s title, yet I know the history of this team. Perhaps you need to illuminate yourself on that history so that you can appreciate it. Apparently, for you, that would include the 80s and the Kosar years. That said, there is no doubt that it is time for this team to start making some new positive history

  • By the way, perhaps I should claim copyright protection on my thoughts and information, after all, if you use any of this in your novella I should perhaps be compensated? πŸ˜‰

The time I really started remembering the Browns was when Testaverde was under center. I'm very aware of the history. We were an unstoppable force when Groza and Graham had the field. In the 60's it was Jim Brown. I guess in the 70's we weren't that great, but Turkey Jones threw Terry Bradshaw on his head, so there's that. The late 80s it was Kosar, Minnifield, Dixon, and Byner and fuck John Elway. By the way, when I was an undergrad, he and his daughter visited my campus, I saw them on tour and told him to never return to Ohio.

While I don't remember the games, I remember my family's excitement during the time. I acknowledge that we had some great teams. For me, however, we've been anything but. The most exciting teams I've had to cheer for were the Couch/Holcomb first round exit and DA, BE, and K2's fluke year (the 2007 Seahawks game was the most exciting game I've ever seen in my life). We've had two winning seasons since 1999, and that's all I've really known, so you'll have to excuse me if I don't really care to hear about how great we used to be. Our team and city has been the laughingstock of sports entertainment for as long as I can remember. I'm sick of this place being the butt in every sports joke.

Dude, which of those points would you dispute? Gipper speaks the truth. He could expand on the tradition of Northeast Ohio football to the most successfull college football program in NCAA history (Mount Union), but that would take up oodles more space than your brain could absorb.

I think the fact that we used to be competitive with the Steelers and owned them during the 80's makes us latch onto them as our biggest rivals. The fact that we've never really been competitive with the Ravens ever caused most fans to give up mentally and write the rivalry off since it's always been so one sided and that's all we've ever known.

The Ravens were most hated at the beginning of the new era Browns, but it has died out, same with the Bengals because we view them as even keel .

  • Hello all, I'm writing a fictional story about a die hard Browns fan and I would like to ask you all what it means to be a Browns fan. I'm doing my research now, but if you think there's anything pertinent about the Browns' history I should know,I would appreciate any insight. Thanks in advance!

Clevelanders are blue collar people, made up of mostly 2nd,3rd and 4th generation immigrants,Irish,Polish,Italian, if you only count the whites.

Cleveland sports in my lifetime (born in 80) has been filled with what ifs and almosts, full of let downs.

    Jordan killing us, the drive,the fumble,Browns moving,Lebron leaving, 95 world series,97..

If you are going to make a story about a Browns fan I would suggest making the character a Clevelander first, based off of the more popular Boston characters we've seen in movies but with a Cleveland theme.

And when you are doing that don't forget beer drinking and Rock n' Roll music. Two things that are deeply woven into the fabric of most Clevelanders.

  • Thank you guys for all your help. If there's anything else you think I should know I'd appreciate it. Thanks a lot.

  • People like myself don't give a shit what Jim brown and a team in the 50s did. I'm 30 and have seen nothing to put on the fridge. Seriosly when my milestones surpass that of the sport teams I root for Its just plain sad. We are cursed!!!

  • When I was thirty the Browns were struggling through the Belicheck era and I had never seen Otto Graham or J Brown play, but I respected the tradition, learned everything I could about it and am very proud of it.

The Browns don't owe you anything to put on your fridge. Either you are in 100% or you're not.

  • browns fans are diehard no matter what the era they grew up watching and falling in love with the team. some are geographical fans (such as myself) growing up fans of their high school teams, college teams and then progressively moving to the browns, like i said geographically. if you grew up in southern ohio i'm sure you would lean towards the bengals (ohio university, cincinnatti, and even louisville) as your college bball and football teams.

i grew up in sandusky so of course i root for the blue streaks (HS) toledo, bgsu, kent state, akron etc (cleveland state bball) and nothing but the browns in the nfl.

you have to have solid fortitude rooting for the browns. but that's a part of being a man. seen some good times in the sipe and kosar era, and have seen glimpses of something that coulda and shoulda worked if not for the leadership and indecision from ownership and their FO.

we constantly hope and pray that the next 'person' hired will be the solution to getting this team over the top. well since '99 it's been a gut wrenching situation. i swear some people on this board could have done better in decision making in player and coaching personnel and timetables to each and..............

most of us live and die for sunday browns football. it can either end up in a fun filled high fiveing party or a trail to the bathroom where you are going to hurl all the draft beer and bad chicken wings up into the toilet as you scream weeden sucks.

  • Cleveland Browns fans are eternal optimists. The older fans know first hand the glory of the Browns. They've lived the pride and exhilaration of their team going to war on football Sundays and coming home victorious. The emotional rush of that moment is powerful and impossible to forget....akin to an euphoria producing drug. The younger fans, as mentioned in an earlier post, while maybe not remembering the actual game, recall the pride, happiness and celebrations associated with the Browns doing great things. Their minds are forever imprinted with the positive emotions they observed and felt from their family members and their friends.

For me, rooting for the Browns is analogous to having a significant relationship with drug addicted or alcoholic family member or close friend.. No matter how often they slip up and cause grieve you still hold on to those memories of them when they were healthy and not strung out. Deep in your heart you are optimistic they can beat their demons and regain their self respect and dignity. Time after time you tell them to get out of your life forever, only to take them back for one more try at redemption.

The Browns of the eighties have left me with the most memories. The "Cardiac Kids" of the early eighties followed by the Kosar led Browns of the late 80's have a spot in my mind that will be difficult to duplicate

Once a fan, it is impossible to disavow the Browns. The light at the end of the tunnel, while sometime obscured by the smoke of frustration and despair, is always visible to those who continue to believe. Go Browns!!!!!

usually I don't disagree with u Z. But calling me a jilted school girl cause I refuse to hang my hat on somethin the browns did a half century ago is getting old. We are the only franchise in all of sports that does that. Show me something in my lifetime.... anything.

We watch a team win there first superbowl every 3 or 4 years and we shit the bed with 4 and 5 wins religiously. And people who weren't even alive throw out well we used to be this good like they've actually thrown their arms up in celebration after the last game of the season.

I respect our traditions that I've come to read from books and from my elders. And I know as much as anyone on here scoreboard wise when it comes to browns historic milestones.

But GD I would like to have something of my own to tell my grandkids yea they used to be good when I was ur age.

I'm as big if not a bigger fan than anyone on here and I believe this with all my heart when I say I don't think ill ever see the Browns win a championship!!!!!

Just don't act like a jilted school girl.

    Z

usually I don't disagree with u Z.
