Truncated Careers

  • Darrian Connor..outside LB who was a bust for the falcons ...

  • Sucking can ALSO truncate ones career.

  • Bo Jacksons career may have been cut short, but it was long enough to sustain the legend....Bo was as good as it gets in a couple of sports.

and he also got out of the game before they started testing.

    talk about a steroid freak.

  • WR- I even mentioned it before- Lawyer Tillman.

  • there was a WR who was in his prime and played a game at the old philly stadium (whose turf was the worse in the league...carpet over concrete) caught a ball up in the air, came down, landed and blew out both knees.

anyone remember that and who it was?

    googled it:

    5. Wendell Davis, WR Chicago Bears

Davis is the one guy on our list whose injury actually occurred during a play. While running deep on a pass route at Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium in 1993 in a contest between the Eagles and Chicago Bears, Davis blew out both knees at the same time when his cleats got caught in a seam in the Astroturf. The devastating injury forced him to miss the rest of the '93 season and all of 1994. He attempted a comeback with the Indianapolis Colts the following year, but never made it into another NFL contest.

  • With all of this injury talk, I began to thinking about various players whose careers really were vastly curtailed by injuries. These are the "what coulda" been guys.

    Start with this list:

    Jahvid Best

    Chris Beanie Wells

    Curtis Enis

    Robert Edwards

    KiJana Carter

    Blair Thomas

    Marcus Dupree

    Bo Jackson

    Rickey Bell

    Duane Thomas

    and finally these two:

    Joe Delaney

    Ernie Davis

What do you think coulda/shoulda been with any of these guys? And can you think of other RBs?

Ernie Davis' career was cut short by Leukemia, not by an injury.

Ernie Davis would have turned Jim Brown into a second team player. He was bigger, faster and more versitile. The decision to draft him was what initiated Jim Brown's campaign to get Paul Brown fired. What PB did regarding Bobby Mitchell was indeed enough to cuse his firing.

But I thought, you said in another post that you didn't like living in the past............ This entire topic is based in the past.

Well, not so sure about Ernie Davis, we'll never know for sure.

However, I did come up with two more Browns- Gary Baxter, & Le Charles Bentley. How could i have forgotten so fast?

    it's called age my friend.

i have an ADD practice now i HAVE to do before leaving the house.....keys, phone, cigs, lighter, wallet, sun glasses then while walking out the door i do the macarena hitting all my pockets to make sure everything is there. then remembering to turn off everything off and make sure the dog is in his place etc. etc.

then the worse is driving a mile or 2 after leaving your house and remembering that you forgot to bring your briefcase or camera or laptop considering where you are going and potentially who you might meet.

aye' yi yi. it gets worse every year.

RBs seem to have the worst of the injury situation. I can only think of a few QBs whose careers were derailed by injury:

    Tim Couch is one

    Jack Thompson

    Greg Cook

a few others had derailed careers, like Todd Marinovich/Vince Young/Jamarcus Russell/Ryan Leaf....but there problems were either a suckage appendage, or drugs.

Can you think of any others?

    Bert Jones

    Chris Miller

    Miller played 10 seasons? Really?

How about WRs/TEs. Can't think of many. Perhaps K2 could fit here. Anyone else?

No one knows how good he could've been in the pros but Patrick Rowe was very very good at San Diego State and never played for the Browns.

I remember the Browns drafting him....but I don't recall what happened to him. What happened?

Yea, but that is not the theme of this thread.

You think? (The same can be said, I think, about Albert Belle, perhaps?)

No, I said I don't want live in the land of regret...which has nothing to do with memorializing the past.

By that I mean I don't think we should constantly be bemoaning the fact that "we coulda drafted Superman, instead we got Wally Cox" (you gotta be old enough to remember that reference...think,like the Urkle of his day)

I don't remember the details but I think it was an injury in a preseason game and i'm pretty sure he never played again.

  • Gayle Sayers first came to mind for RB's. Played only 3 complete (14 game seasons) and 13 games in one other. No telling what he would have done had the modern day Dr. Andrews been around back then.

For QB's my top one is Greg Cook. But others that I don't think have been mentioned would include Dr. Frank Ryan and Chad Pennington.

EDIT: Almost forgot my main man on the D-line... Jerry Sherk.... cut down by a knee in his prime.

  • At the risk of starting something that should never be started, you wonder how good Colt McCoy might have been if he didn't destroy his shoulder before coming to the browns.

He might have had the cannon arm of Ty Detmer instead of the pop gun arm of Charlie Frye...

The fragile McCoy got injured in his first preseason game with the 49ers after going 3-7 for 41 yards and a pick.

Can we just toss the dirt on that grave now?
