If the playoffs started today, here is who would be in:
AFC
East Patriots 10-4 #2 seed
North Bengals 9-5 #3 seed
South Colts 9-5 #4 seed @
West Broncos #1 seed % (by virtue of head to head over Chiefs
Wildcards Chiefs 11-3 #5 seed %, Ravens 8-6 #6 seed (by virtue of head to head over Dolphins)
In the hunt: Dolphins 8-6, Chargers 7-7
NFC
East Eagles 8-6 #3 seed
North Bears 8-6 #4 seed
South Saints 10-4 #2 seed (by virtue of head to head over Panthers)
West Seahawks #1 seed %
Wildcards Panthers 10-4 #5 seed (by virtue of head to head over 49ers), 49ers 10-4 #6 seed
In the hunt: Cardinals 9-5, Packers 7-6-1, Lions 7-7, Cowboys 7-7
@ Colts only team to secure division title to date
% Chiefs/Broncos/Seahawks have clinched a playoff spot
-
Race for the #1 overall draft pick:
1. Texans 2-12
2. Redskins 3-11 (pick held by Rams)
3. Browns/Jags/Raiders/Bucs/Falcons all 4-10
8. Vikings 4-9-1
9. Bills/Titans/Giants all 5-9
-
Games between contenders this week:
Panthers vs. Saints for supremacy of NFCS
Colts vs. Chiefs If Chiefs to have a chance for AFCW title and #1 seed, they must win
Cardinals vs. Seahawks Cardinals fighting for WC spot
Patriots vs. Ravens Ravens need to stay in WC spot and for chance at AFCN title
Bears vs. Eagles Both need win to stay ahead of division challangers and for seeding.
Other games with some impact on playoffs:
Dolphins vs. Bills Dolphins need win to stay in challenge for WC spot
Vikings vs. Bengals Loss by Bengals jeopardizes their lead in division....and a playoff spot
Broncos vs. Texans Broncos need win to stay ahead of Chiefs/Pats in division and in seeding
Cowboys vs. Redskins Out of it Redskins would love to serve death knell to Cowboys playoff hopes
Giants vs. Lions ditto for Giants vis a vis Lions playoff hopes
Steelers vs. Packers Steeler win could hammer Packers playoff hopes
Raiders vs. Chargers Raiders would like to send Chargers playoff hopes to oblivion
Falcons vs. 49ers Falcons want to save some pride and put a damper on 49ers playoff status...plus get revenge for last year's NFC title game
Games for Draft seeding:
Bucs vs. Rams Rams already sitting pretty with the Skins first round pick.
Titans vs. Jags
Browns vs. Jets
-
Here is the hell of it....for the Bengals.
If they lose Sunday to the Vikings, and the Ravens beat the Pats, then the last game of the season between the Ravens and Bengals will be for the division title, winner take all
...and actually the same applies even if the Bengals win vs. Vikes.
However...if Bengals lose to both Vikings and Ravens...Ravens win division title, and the Bengals are likely sitting home for the playoffs, as they could easily be surpassed by either the Dolphins or the Chargers.

Aren't Steelers still in the hunt as well? Or are you just mentioning the teams that realistically have a chance?
Aren't Steelers still in the hunt as well? Or are you just mentioning the teams that realistically have a chance?
I think they are mathematically eliminated. They are 6-8....which means they can do no better than 8-8. The Chiefs/Broncos have clinched one WC spot.
The Bengals are 9-5 and at worst can fall to 9-7. The Ravens are 8-6 and can at worst fall to 8-8, the same as the Steelers. The Dolphins are also 8-6 and at worse can go to 8-8
Steelers cannot catch the Bengals. They need both the Ravens and Dolphins to lose both their final games and finish tied with them at 8-8. They also need the 7-7 Chargers to finish no better than 8-8.
Chargers play KC and Oakland
Pitt plays Green Bay and Cleveland
Bengals play Vikings and Ravens
Ravens play Pats/Bengals
Miami plays Buffalo and the Jets (they have the easiest schedule obviously)
If somehow they could get to a 3-4 way tie at 8-8 for that final playoff spot...maybe they would have a chance on some down the line tiebreaker.
They lost to the Dolphins.....so any tie breaker that would involve taking that head to head game into consideration, they lose.
They split with the Ravens. The Ravens beat the Dolphins
So: Dolphins beat both Steelers and Chargers
Ravens beat Dolphins
Steelers/Ravens split two games.
Chargers did not play Steelers/Ravens.
Ravens beat Bengals in first meeting.
Bengals/Steelers split.
OK, I have no clue right now on what would happen if 3-4 teams tie

What are the tiebreakers? Are we 3 or 7? If Cousins wins, will we pick ahead of the Rams?Race for the #1 overall draft pick:

Ok, Right now we pick 5th. The first tiebreaker is sos.
Jax and oakland beat us in the tiebreaker.
If the redskins win we could pass them in sos and possibly oakland. Highest we get is second though. No chance of us picking lower than 5th if we lose out also. Oak and Was sos is easier by one game. Jax has us by 3.

if the playoffs started yesterday we'd be watching other teams besides the browns participate in them.

Yea, you would think that the tiebreakers for the draft order would perhaps be somewhat the same as for making the playoffs....but it is not. Example, If Jax and the Browns were tied, you would think the Browns would get the better pick because Jax beat us......but no. It is strength of schedule.....and, to me, even that is questionable. How do you figure strength of schedule? Is it just the overall record or your opponents, or what?

Up until a week ago or so...until our defense decided to take naps in the 4th quarter, at least we could say that the Browns were "in the hunt".
Figure this: If the Browns hold on to those 4th quarter leads they lost the last 3 weeks, they would be 7-7. They should be 7-7 if not better..... and none of these 4th quarter failures can be laid squarely on the hands of the messed up QB situation....but rather on the supposed solid defense, that turned from a brick wall into oat meal.

If we somehow manage to end up picking 3rd, and for some reason it goes
1: Texans - Bridgewater
2: Rams - Matthews
And we end up with a bunch of trade offers for Clowney, how far down would you be willing to go? A scenario you could envisage is the giants trading their 11th pick, plus next year's pick, plus maybe their second rounder for Clowney. Take it and run? Laugh in their ears?

yep, worst record picks first. I wouldn't wanna go down that far....I'd really consider taking him. Trade Sheard. If we somehow manage to end up picking 3rd, and for some reason it goes

Point differential is dodgy, since it's related to SOS. In direct head to head between two teams, then result against that team obviously should be first. But when it's between 5 teams, who might not have played each other, it's difficult to do a mini-division scenario to determine pecking order.

agree. Second tb is conference record and divisional record and then its point differntial I think. If tied after that its a coin flip.Point differential is dodgy, since it's related to SOS. Not sure I like that. Conference record is very subjective - for example, St Louis are 1-4 in their conference, because they have a dominant conference. They're 6-8, but dead last, with three teams having a winning record. I suppose you're looking to even up conferences, but you're really only making them stronger. After SOS should be point differential, IMO.

You are confusing division with conference. Conference is the entire NFC, not just the NFCW.
