Phil Taylor - 5th Year Clause
-
Something that doesn't seem to have been covered here, the browns have until next weekend to take up the 5th year option on Phil Taylor, for something like $5.5m, apparently. Should they?
If they don't, then perhaps they might look to trade him? Or just hope they can renegotiate this year?
An overview of who's up for extension:
No. 21 overall, Phil Taylor, DT, Cleveland ($5.5M): Taylor made an immediate impact as a rookie, he is diverse and can anchor the Browns line. The Browns need to retain a building block. Taylor's massive size -- even though spotted in a rotation -- and potential is enough that, if it were me making the decision for the big-spending and cap-loaded team, I would pick up the option and then weigh his long-term future down the line. But from what I gather, the Browns aren't as high on him as they used to be. He's seen as more of a situational player, and going over $5 million just might be too steep.

He hasn't been exactly the player he was thought to be. I'd still pick up the option and then see what he's looking for on his future contract.

Those are the top 50 average salaries this season for 2015 for NFL Defensive Tackles.
As it stands this season, Taylor is 35th, earning just over 2 million this season. Picking up the 5th year option would skyrocket him up to 11th, tied with Kendall Langford and ahead of Marcel Dareus, Brandon Mebane, Star Lotuleilei and some other quality defensive tackles. Granted, some of them are still on their rookie contracts and will certainly be earning more.
Picking up the option would be smart, but if his next contract is going to have him paid in the top 15, I say we let him walk. He's a situational player right now, a good one at that, but I don't think he's going to be much more.

Glad he is staying

First-year coach Mike Pettine said after watching Taylor during a three-day minicamp this week that Taylor "is a great fit for what we want to do on defense."
Taylor says he hopes to be in Cleveland for his entire career and "be part of the team that turns this franchise back into a perennial winner and championship contender."
Hope this works out on both fronts as quoted above.

So doesn't Pettine run a hybrid multiple front scheme? I figure they'll bump Rubin in next to Taylor on the inside for 4 man fronts?

Yes, Rubin and Taylor should be pretty fucking nasty. I love me some big Phil too. I think he is sorely underrated. Ismaaly (sp) Kitchen isn't too shabby either.
