    Navy?

You are on the right track. It was the Great Lakes Naval Academy in Chicago during WWII, where he first coached OG.

  • OK, the last group of trivia I did for the newbies didn't do that well with them. Hopefully it is not a fact that al they know about is Johnny Football. Here is a chance for them ...and the rest of you, to show a little knowledge about the history of the teams in the AFC North. Carry on:

    1. Where did the Ravens defense rank in the league in their 2012 Super Bowl season?

    2. There are 4 teams that the Ravens have played the most times in the postseason (3 times each).

    Name these 4 teams.

    3. From their inception in 1933 until they won their very first postseason game in 1972 the Steelers played, and lost, to only 1 single team in the postseason. What was that team?

    4. When the Steelers finally did break through to win that first postseason game, who did they defeat?

5.A. Who is the last team the Steelers have defeated in the postseason?

    B. Who is the last team the Browns defeated in the postseason?

    9. Who is the leading passer in yards in Bengals history?

    10. Who is the leading passer in yards in Browns history?

    11. For purposes of this question "Pro football titles" refers to those titles won in the NFL, or in those leagues that merged with the NFL (those being the AAFC and the AFL, not included are like USFL or XFL etc. )

    A. Name those teams from Western PA that have won a pro football title.

    B. Name those teams from Maryland that have won a Pro football title.

    C. Name those teams from Southwest Ohio that have won a Pro football title.

    D. Name those teams from Northeast Ohio that have won a Pro football title

    12. Name those members of the "Steel Curtain" Dynasty that are members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. (do not include owners Art and Dan Rooney...which I just gave here, but do include the coach). Hint: 10 names

    13. Names those members of the Browns 40s/50s dynasty that are members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame (including coach). Hint: 9 names

    Final Answers:

    1. Where did the Ravens defense rank in the league in their 2012 Super Bowl season?

They were 17th ranked. As noted eisewhere, that really was far from the best team in the NFL...but as we see so often in the NFL Tournament as in the NCAA tournament, it is not the best team that wins, just the one that gets hot at the right time.

    2. There are 4 teams that the Ravens have played the most times in the postseason (3 times each).

    Name these 4 teams.

    Steelers/Patriots/Colts/Titans

    3. From their inception in 1933 until they won their very first postseason game in 1972 the Steelers played, and lost, to only 1 single team in the postseason. What was that team?

Philadelphia Eagles to whom they lost 21-0 in a playoff game in 1947.

    4. When the Steelers finally did break through to win that first postseason game, who did they defeat?

The Oakland Raiders in the Immaculate Reception Game. That is why that game came to be considered so memorable, not only for the final play, but also because it was the very first postseason victory in Steeler history

5.A. Who is the last team the Steelers have defeated in the postseason? The Jets in the 2010 AFC title game.

    B. Who is the last team the Browns defeated in the postseason? The Patriots in 1994.

    C. Who is the last team the Bengals defeated in the postseason? The Houston Oilers in like 1990 (have lost 5 in a row)

    D. Who is the last team the Ravens defeated in the postseason? The 49ers in the 2012 Super Bowl

    6. Who did present Bengals coach Marvin Lewis replace as HC of the Bengals?

Dick LeBeau, current DC of the Steelers.

    7. Named the 4 entities that Paul Brown coached before becoming the HC of the Bengals?

There are actually 5, but one...his first High School gig is not ever thought of. Here they are:

Forrest Gregg and Sam Wyche, Bengals. Brian Billick and John Harbaugh, Ravens. Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher, Mike Tomlin, Steelers

(Note: Blanton Collier took Browns to 2 games if won would have put the Browns into the SB, Marty Schottenheimer also too the Browns to 2 AFC title games but lost, and Bud Carson took Browns to one AFC title game but lost)

    9. Who is the leading passer in yards in Bengals history?

Ken Anderson 32838 yards. (Esiason 27,149)

    10. Who is the leading passer in yards in Browns history?

Brian Sipe 23, 713.....but only by 129 yards more than Otto Graham at 23,584. Kosar=21,904

    11. For purposes of this question "Pro football titles" refers to those titles won in the NFL, or in those leagues that merged with the NFL (those being the AAFC and the AFL, not included are like USFL or XFL etc. )

    A. Name those teams from Western PA that have won a pro football title.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are the only team. In fact the Steelers are the only NFL/AFL/AAFC team that has resided in Peetown.

    B. Name those teams from Maryland that have won a Pro football title.

There was also a Baltimore Colts AAFC team that, other than name, is not the same franchise as the current Colts.

The Akron Pros...1920 NFL champs, The Canton Bulldogs 1922/23 NFL Champs, The Cleveland Bulldogs 1924 Champs (technically considered a separate franchise, for some reason), The 1945 Cleveland Rams, The Cleveland Browns 8 titles in AAFC and NFL.

Note: other teams that have played in NEOhio include: Cleveland Indians, Oorang Indians, Dallas Texans.

    12. Name those members of the "Steel Curtain" Dynasty that are members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. (do not include owners Art and Dan Rooney...which I just gave here, but do include the coach). Hint: 10 names

Paul Brown, Len Ford, Frank Gatski, Otto Graham, Lou Groza, Dante Lavelli, Mik McCormack, Marion Motley, Bill Willis

Note: Only the Packers of the 1960 have more Hall of Famers inducted from those team than the 70s Steelers and 40s/50s Browns.

    14. Name the 5 Hall of Famers who played on the Browns last title team in 1964.

Jim Brown, Gene Hickerson, Paul Warfield, Lou Groza, Leroy Kelly only Groza was the holdout from an earlier era.

    15. A. Name the two Hall of Famers who ever played for the Bengals. Anthony Munoz, primary, and Charlie Joiner(secondary)

    B. Name the 4 Hall of Famers who ever played for the Ravens.

(these last two lists can include players who only "had a cup of coffee" with those teams)

Jonathan Ogden, primary. Deion Sanders, Shannon Sharpe, Rod Woodson secondary

  • Historical Note:

There have actually been 4 NFL teams in NE Ohio that have gone by the name Indians. The original Cleveland Indians also were the Tigers for one year and played from 1920-1921. Then another Cleveland Indians team began play in 1923...but changed their name to The Bulldogs after the Canton Bulldogs went out. (absurd that a team would fold after winning 2 consecutive championships)

Then in 1931 a Cleveland Indians team played in the NFL for one year....but apparently lost its ownership group and folded.

Then there were the Oorang Indians who played out of Mansfield, Ohio...and were founded by Jim Thorpe. It was an all Native American team, and the "Oorang" was actually a corporate name that came from a dog Kennel.

Perhaps the most unusual team to ever play pro football.
