  • Reds-Pirates was going to be my first answer on NL but I switched it.

You sure Tark didnt play in four conference titles?

He played in 3 SBs and it seems they got knocked out in an NFC championship during that era as well.

  • Don't follow the other sports, but I'll take a crack at couple of the football ones:

    2A: Cowboys

    9: Elway

You should have stuck with your first instinct. Reds/Pirates is a Check.

My thinking is the same as yours, but my source didn't have him in 4.....but we can double check.

    Check on both.

  • Your source is right on Tarkenton. They made the conference championship in 77 but Tarkenton was out with a broken leg and The General, Robert Lee, started.

  • Here is a set of Trivia to work on over the weekend. All kinds of different sports stuff:

    1. The NHL and NBA playoffs are in their final four in each sport. Simply tell when was the last year that each of these 8 teams won a championship...in any league:

    NY Rangers:

    Montreal Canadiennes:

    LA Kings

    Chicago Blackhawks

    Miami Heat

    Indiana Pacers

    San Antonio Spurs

    Oklahoma City Thunder:

    2. A. Which NFL team has appeared in the most league/conference championship games leading up to the Super Bowl since 1966?

    B. Which 2 teams have lost the most league/conference championship games leading up to the Super Bowl since 1066? Hint: neither is the same as the team in A.

    3. A. Which two AFC teams have met the most times in postseason play?

    Final Answers

    1. The NHL and NBA playoffs are in their final four in each sport. Simply tell when was the last year that each of these 8 teams won a championship...in any league:

    NY Rangers: 1994

    Montreal Canadiennes: 1993

    LA Kings 2012

    Chicago Blackhawks 2013

    Miami Heat 2013

    Indiana Pacers 1973...ABA

San Antonio Spurs 2007 (beat Cavs)

Oklahoma City Thunder: Never... in my view....though in some quarters the Thunder is considered the same franchise as the Seattle Supersonics, which won the NBA in 1979. I don't think that issue has ever been resolved.

    2. A. Which NFL team has appeared in the most league/conference championship games leading up to the Super Bowl since 1966?

    The Dallas Cowboys 16 (Steelers=15)

    B. Which 2 teams have lost the most league/conference championship games leading up to the Super Bowl since 1066? Hint: neither is the same as the team in A.

The 49ers and Raiders have each lost 9 conf. title games

    3. A. Which two AFC teams have met the most times in postseason play?

Broncos and Steelers have met 7 times.

    B. Which 2 NFC teams have met the most times in postseason play? For this, there are actually 3 matchups that are involved. Name them. Also, this includes pre-Super Bowl play as well.

    Cowboys/Rams

    49ers/Giants

    Bears/Giants.

    4. Since 1869 which school has won the most Division I (or the equivalency thereof) Football National Championships?

Yale has won 18 championships. Most obviously in the 1800s, early 1900s. Still, they have been naming a champ one way or another for the last 145 years.

    5. Which state has had the most schools win the NCAA National Basketball Championship tournament? Name state and schools.

California with 4 schools: Cal/UCLA/Stanford/San Francisco. North Carolina has had 3 schools Duke/NC/NCSt..

KY, Ohio, Mich., NY, Wisc. PA have each had 2 schools win.

    6. Name those 7 cities that have won a Championship in all four of the Big Four sports: baseball, football, basketball, Hockey

New York, LA, Chicago, Philly, Boston, Detroit, Pittsburgh. As noted, Dallas came within one strike of joining this group.

Of course, not all cities have teams in all 4 sports. The other cities that could join this group besides Dallas are:

Bay area SF/Oak/SJ, (lacking only hockey title)

Phoenix, (has only won in baseball)

Denver, (won hockey and football, but not basketball/baseball)

    Minnesota (won only in baseball)

    Miami (won all but hockey)

    Washington (won all but hockey)

    7. Name the only city in history to have all 4 of their pro teams make the Finals in their sport in the same calendar year. (note: calendar year for basketball/hockey is year of the playoffs. For NFL it is the year of the regular season)

Philadelphia 1980. Phillies/Eagles/76ers/Flyers all made the finals. ....but only the Phillies won. The other 3 all lost)

8.A. Since division play in baseball started in 1967 which 2 AL teams have met the most times in postseason play?

The Red Sox and the Angels have met 5 times

    B. Which 2 National League team?

The Reds and the Pirates 6 times

    9. Name those 12 Quarterbacks who have started 4 or more league/conference championship games in the NFL since 1966.

    Brady 7, Montana 6, Elway 6, McNabb 5, Staubach 5, Kelly 5, Bradshaw 5, Aikman 4, Favre 4, Peyton 4, Roethlisberger 4, Stabler 4.

    10. The NHL and NBA play their playoffs simultaneously. NO city in history has ever had teams win titles in both sports in the same year. What was the last year in which a city had the opportunity to do so by having a team participate in the Finals in both sports. Name the city and teams.

It is the NY/NJ area in 2003 which had the Nets play in the NBA finals, losing to San Antonio, and the NJ Devils beating the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.

So, in the last 11 years no city has had 2 teams even playing in the Finals.
