Is this the deepest roster we've had?

You tell me... These guys all seem viable to make a 53-man roster (and I don't just mean making a crappy "same 'ol Browns" roster, but a real NFL roster)...

QB - Hoyer, Manziel, Thigpen, Shaw

RB - Tate, West, Lewis, Ogbonnaya, Baker, Crowell

WR - Gordon (sus?), Austin, Hawkins, Burleson, Bennett, Benjamin, Johnson, Armstrong

TE - Cameron, Dray, Barnidge, Gray

OT - Thomas, Schwartz, Wallace, Faulk

OG - Bitonio, Greco, Pinkston, Gilkey, McQuiston

    C - Mack

DL - Taylor, Rubin, D.Bryant, Winn, Hughes, A.Bryant, Kitchen

LB - Dansby, Kruger, Sheard, Mingo, Kirksey, Robertson, Carder, Eubanks, Diles

CB - Haden, Gilbert, Skrine, Desir, Trufant, McFadden, Berry, Poyer

S - Whitner, Gipson, Bademosi, Slaughter, Aubrey

    Italics - rookie

    bold - pro bowler

That's 61 players right there, and I would be confident with any of them on the roster. Sure, we may have a big hole at WR if Gordon is suspended, and our starters may not be THE BEST unit, but the roster looks like it is going to be deep. 7 former pro bowlers + 2 first round picks, and add in a a solid 2nd round pick to solidify the o-line... On paper, and barring injury, this might be one hell of a football team...

Or, it's just more of that post-draft June optimism... I just hope our guys who are hurt get healthy, and our guys who are healthy stay that way, otherwise it could be a huge blow

I don't know if it's the deepest. I think we were pretty deep when we Kosar, Mack, and Byner. I think it's the deepest since 1999 though, at least on defense.

at certain positions yes. we got a ton of guys in the D backfield to compete for spots. RB as well. we brought in a lot of WR because of the gordon situation and the fact that we didn't draft one.

i think a lot of those names will be gone by the end of TC.

I think he means of the new-era Browns and I think he may be right. I was just noticing how deep we are in certain areas. I still think we have a ways to go but I'm excited by what this management team has accomplished in the off-season. I give the Browns 2014/15 as another building year with playoff expectations for 2015/16 and certainly beyond. We still need to improve at QB, WR, OL and the LB's. QB might just be experience (let's hope!) and WR may need the return of Gordon with either a surprise #2 (already on the roster) or a 1st round pick next year. OL still needs to prove it can ground-and-pound running lanes, but again, the players may be already on the team. We could probably use another stud OG. And we need to find a stud ILB in next year's draft while the OLB's improve. We already had a deep DL, TE, and a few key players. But now we're also pretty deep at RB, CB, and safety.

It won't be long, Browns fans, and this year may surprise you!

oh, i agree. just some of the guys that will go to camp obviously will get cut.

i'm very excited (as i am every off-season at this time) with a new found trust in the brown's FO and the organization as a whole. something i haven't felt since the 80s and their structure (yeah it was modell but that team built winners, don't kill me on that). i think haslam is letting these guys NOW do their jobs. lerners failed with all their hires. haslam saw the light real quick with heckyl and jeckyl and settled on a serious football minded group who I think will have this team in the playoffs if not this year, next year.

You are going to have to include a kicker/punter/long snapper for those 53 spots......so lets see you cull that 61 down to 50. (while know that a few can be relegated to the Taxi Squad.)

I totally agree with the above. These guys just instill a confidence that they know what they're doing & they are determined to keep improving. We sure can't gripe about this off season & what they have done for the Team's depth.

I am really looking forward to post game interviews (win or lose) this season. Something tells me it's not going to be the old excuse making, "we'll try to win a game" type bullshit we have had to tolerate for years. The air is smellin' a whole lot better in Browns' Town.

Yes... at least 11 of them will be gone at the end of TC, 10 if Gordon ends up on the SUS list...

Can you find 11 to cut? It's not as easy as previous years...

But we may also add a few who are cut by other teams as well...

For me, it first needs to be broken down by how many guys will be kept at each position. In some, I see only 3 backs being kept. Not realistic IMO. I see it as such.....

    QB....3

    RB....4

    WR...6

    TE/FB..3

    OL...9

    25 total on O

    DL...6

    LB...8

    CB...5

    S.....4

    23 total

    LS....1

    P......1

    K......1

    3 total

Thats 51 slots....2 more open...best of the bunch....one will probably be another corner type....those guys are good on special teams...the other probably a backer type...again, they offer special team value.

That is definitely NOT the way it works. You fill the required spots, then you keep the BEST PLAYERS on the roster. Every team does it different, and it depends on the offensive/defensive systems and the primary positions your best STs players play. If we are going to be a "run heavy" offense, we may keep 5 RBs on the roster, while a team like Denver might keep 7 WRs. Same on defense. If you're running a 4-3, you might keep 10 D-lineman, but if you're running a 3-4 you might keep 10 LBs...

Good coaches can fit the roster to their talent, not the other way around...

We could go position by position with this.

QB should be easy. I think it's a safe bet the Browns start the season with 3. Hoyer and Manziel are locks. The Browns would probably like Thigpen to outperform Shaw in TC so they can surround Manziel with a couple vets and try to stash Shaw on the PS. Other way around? Shaw probably gets the nod as QB 3 because they feel they would lose him otherwise.

RB is a little tougher. 3 or 4, not totally sure. Waddya think? Tate and West are locks. I'd be wondering who could catch out of the backfield, like as in a 3rd down back.

Crowell not known as a catcher. Ogbie is and played that role a little bit last year, l think. Baker seems to have the speed, not sure about the hands. Lewis is the dark horse for me. The Ourlads depth chart on another thread seems to indicate he can catch ok and seems to have the size (as in about 20 lbs lighter than Tate or West).

I'll stop with that to avoid a marathon post and see if any other interest in this direction.

How do you know? I think you have position minimums.

Sure, some teams may go with 2 QB's or massage the numbers I presented, but to say that isn't how it works is ignorant. I don't care how many players are better, a team isn't going in to the season with just 5 offensive lineman on the roster.

If you agree with that, then you agree with me and know your previouis comment was stupid. How many times have you read a guy got cut because he got caught up in the numbers? WTF do you think that means?

You can disagree with some of my numbers.....cool...that's open for discussion, but to say that isn't how it works tells me you don't understand the game.

Isn't it nice to argue about who will be cut? We finally have some viable depth thanks to Farmer, Pettine, et al.

In the recent past it was basically, "Oh, he's ALIVE? Wow! Let's keep him".

It's best football players regardless of position.

Last year we had only 4 CB's on the roster for game1.
