New Free Agent Combine....
-
Theyre gonna take applications and choose 100 or so to come and work out.
-
I'm pretty sure they said it's open to ALL FA. So older players have the opportunity to show they still have it, as well.
Overall, I think it is a great idea. It could probably give some CFL guys a chance, too. Guys like Hawkins (who came from the CFL and competed on a reality TV show) could get their shot at making the NFL by auditioning for every NFL team at once.
EDIT:
From the ESPN article, "You're talking the NFL free agent who is one year out of college and was in a training camp, or a 10-year veteran who has been a starter in the league," Birk said. "It will be very diverse, although at first it probably will tilt toward the younger guys."

I think its a damn good idea. Lets some of the talent that might have gotten a raw deal one way or another, have a 2nd chance at hooking up with a team instead of falling through the cracks into the void.

And it's possible teams might have some game tape on these guys. There's a case the they got cut because they didn't fit the team's system.

So the NFL just announced that they'll be holding a second combine each year which will host all the unemployed 1st-2nd-3rd year free agent players....
I think this is a GREAT idea!!
The way it is right now, marginal players are cut & dropped by teams all the time.....but there is no system to keep track of them or know who all is out there....and then the only way those players can get another look is through their own marketing efforts or by just hoping the phone rings....
So....NOW.....there is a structured event for them all to train for and a second opportunity to show their stuff to all the teams....
Im gonna guess there will be a lot of duds there.....BUT, there will be gems too!....
Bottom line.....I think this is a win win for both the players and the teams......looks like the NFL got one right...

I agree. You have to give baseball credit. Teams hold try-outs all the time. Still gives these guys who think they have someting a chance to showcase. Not many even get signed, let alone make it, but some do. Many of you have seen the movie "The Rookie", about a HS coach and teacher who at the age of 34 or so was signed by Tampa to a minor league contract, then made the parent club for a couple of seasons.
Granted, it is easier to spot baseball talent in a tryout situation. In the Morris case he started throwing the ball 97 MPH, and he was a lefty. That gets you signed, but I applaud the NFL for reaching out to keep track of talent. A lot of good players simply quit because after their first shot, there really aren't anymore. Unless you are a name type player, Canada is a long shot, and arena league is just that.
I can really see this as helping kickers. Being a NFL kicker might be the hardest job to gain in sports. Seeing as those guys typically play 15 years once in the club, not many jobs open up in any given year....maybe 1-2 at best, and they are only 32 of them to be had. This gives those kids 3-4 year more of hope before finally giving up

Wonder how many cfl players are going to show. Guys from the arena teams?
-
Welcome back to the NFL Terrell Owens
-
This is a great idea! Long overdue since some disappear to CFL or Arena League that really are NFL material on some level.
-
They had the European league for a couple of years. The whole ncaa acts like a mini farm league.

I see they are going to hold this at the end of March in Phoenix. Well isn't that nice to get in a nice spring break in the Arizona desert. At least it is not being held in Indy.
Yes... very good thing.

Timed to coincide with an NFL confab. All the GMs will be there already.

All... by invitation up to around 100.

Only if they are veterans of the NFL, I do believe....so, theyd have to have been on an NFL roster at some point....
The only thing better than this is if the NFL had a farm or developmental league.
They do....the NCAA ....and it's free!
