Browns Going To Play Less In FA

The Browns Board

  • You build through the draft.. not FA...

  • Signing free agents only makes sense when value meets cost. You see teams on a yearly basis spend stupid money in the first days of free agency without getting any better the following seasons (Dolphins '13, Bucs '14). How many big time free agents signings pan out? Very few. The ones that are worth it are usually the signings made later on in free agency (Charles Woodson in GB).

And this is what Farmer and his new scouts must start to get right in 2015. Round One

Yup, without doubt. They've already had their 1 and only mulligan.

  • Play less in free agency ...we have had 2 pro bowlers in free agency in years ....any less and we will be in reverse.

  • Uhhh FA is where they were supposed to pick up missing pieces. Yes you do technically build mostly through the draft but you have to add FA acquisitions to that mix. Some of our most important positions on the team are filled with free agents. Kruger, Dansby, Whitner. At least last year our starting QB was a free agent pickup and while that in the end didn't work out we were certainly given one of the best seasons we've had since 99. Our whole receiving corps last year were free agents until Gordon came back, did some of you forget that?

This is not the year to lay back in free agency. We can't fill all our needs through the draft. And there's too much talent out there not to take a swing at some of them. I really don't understand that sentiment on the part of the FO if it's true. Especially at WR.

  • then you geniuses tell us where the browns should spend all of their money?

i see one or two guys i would step up to the plate for and none of them are WRs (those still crying about sammy watkins).

  • But just look at the DT talent we could go after, Knighton..Fairley..Docket..Raji................anyone of those guys could be our starting NT, and all of them are going to be better for the next few years than any DT in the draft.

You need to explain to Farmer what a WR is

i'd take a perennial pro-bowl DT over any WR, period.

if you don't think a run stopper is a much more coveted position over a flashy WR then you know dick about football.

  • "I guess the clarity to that is active v. non-active is really just about being judicious, making smart decisions, said GM Ray Farmer. It doesnt mean were not going to play. But its really focused on being really smart with who you add and when you add. Were really focused on building through the draft. You cant keep going and buying and putting guys in front of guys you draft because when you spend a lot of money on a guy you expect him to play."

    Sounds fair

  • This board is full of reactionary bitches.

  • Trade for Sam Bradford

    -Sign Brian Hardline

    -Sign Cecil Shorts III

    -Sign Steven Jackson

    -Let Cameron walk

You think, lol. The reactions after every game last year were insane
  • I understand this whole "build through the draft" mentality, but it can't be the end all be all
Rookies are going to make mistakes, hell even the greats make some when they are rookies. Others may take a year or two to develop into pro bowlers.

With the cap space Cleveland has they can add some quality veterans AND draft some good talent in this draft.

They need to make a splash in not only the draft, but in FA as well. Bring in starters at the key positions the Browns need to fill, draft depth for those positions, and let the vets mentor these newcomers.

Cleveland has the cap space to go after a guy like Suh. The fucker may be dirty, but 8.5 sacks at a position that most quality DTs only get maybe 4 or 5 at is a commodity. AND he draws the double team! Imagine the holes it can open for our LBs and other guys.

Or they get Maxwell to go opposite of Haden, Dude was solid in Seattle and I think he'd be a good fit in Pettine's scheme. Skrine just isnt that good and he gets flagged all the time for PI. Gilbert is a pansy and I dont see him lasting long here with his bad attitude and lackluster work ethic, but maybe he can change, who knows..

I do think Pettine wants Jerry Hughes. Up and coming guy who had 10 sacks last season.

Hell even if we dont get Suh and get someone for less like Fairley. Our front 7 would still be nasty. Fraley, Hughes, Mingo, Krueger, Dansby, Robertson. It would be an upgrade from last year, maybe we would get someone to eventually replace Bryant through the draft and/or Mingo.Mingo has been kind of a letdown and Bryant is decent. Fairley, Hughes, Krueger, and Dansby would be nasty on that side of the ball.

I can see Hartline coming to Cleveland, he would upgrade our receiving corps but we would still need to add a playmaker in the draft because I don't see us overpaying for Randall Cobb. I think Cooper, White, or Parker would be great additions if we can nab one of them in the 1st or 2nd.

OL depth is something that needs to be addressed through either route. Im not sure who the big names are this year in either the draft or FA but we need to pickup some solid lineman to solidify the right side of our line. Thomas and Binito are solid, Mack is a beast and hopefully he comes back full form, the other guys are liabilities.

TEs I think we are ok with Dray and Barnidge, but it wouldn't hurt to add a receiving TE in the later rounds.

This team can be 8-8 this year if the FO pulls a rabbit out of their ass and gets some quality pieces to build around.

Only conundrum that we can never address is our QB. McClown is going to flop which will force Manziel back into the lineup and things may become bad. Hopefully our running game and defense takes the pressure off whoever our signal caller is. Mallet is an interesting QB, but its too late for that now..

  • But just look at the DT talent we could go after, Knighton..Fairley..Docket..Raji................anyone of those guys could be our starting NT, and all of them are going to be better for the next few years than any DT in the draft.

We agree on Hughes... I think he ends up here.

Raji's production has been way down the past three years... 2014 due to injury, I believe.

Fairley is rumored to be at least as dedicated to the game as Albert Haynesworth.

    Dockett is not a NT.

    Don't know Knighton.

Were I to target a DT, it'd be AZ's Dan Williams.

No reason to spend on any of the above with the prospects in the draft.

Hartline is someone we should bring in. Austin should be let go along with Benjamin. Those two we can replace in the draft

  • I think it could be a function of what they lose in free agency that dictates how active they should be.

    @the-gipper said:

Probably so, but if you do that you are working from a defensive position, only reacting to others actions.

That said, we have read all along that we probably weren't going to be big players, and probably have a pretty good feel for who we are going to lose and who we don't care if we lose. Without the full list in front of me, I'd say losing Skrine and Jordon would be the two losses we would feel to any degree.

My guess is we sign 2-3 players...maybe a D lineman or two and a receiver. Maybe a TE as well.

I was initially worried about Hughes' sack numbers when I looked at them. Considering he's playing along side 3 pro bowl players. However I caught he total sacks, pressures and hits from PFF and I'm good with offering him a solid contract. He'd be an instant upgrade over Mingo, fill a need, and allow us to take a shot on a developmental player much later in the draft.

As for Raji, Knighton and Williams ? No thanks. Raji isn't what he was in 09, Knighton is almost 30 and Williams is a very one dimensional player. I'd like Shelton for the fact he also collapses the interior pocket.
