    Grossi (I know) article - http://espncleveland.com/common/more.php?m=49&action=blog&r=17&post_id=42931

I guess it's a strategy that has worked well for the Ravens.

Its not just the drafting of good players...its developing them. We dont develop players well.

If that is the Browns' plan, then I like the fact that we actually have a plan. Past regimes seemed to be just shooting in the dark, signing people just to sign them and taking too many risks in the draft (not that we didn't last year with Manziel). Having a plan is important.

Not sure I'd agree with that completely. We've drafted and signed UDFAs recently who have turned out pretty good. Examples are:

Crowell, West, Gabriel, Bitonio, and K.Williams, and we'll see about Kirksey, and Desir who have shown flashes. Not to mention, we are still developing Manziel and Gilbert which may still turn out ok. We've also continued to develop young players from the past regimes like Gipson, A.Bryant, Hughes & Winn, Mingo, and Schwartz.

That's 15 young players that seem like they will have prominent roles in 2015. Couple them with vets like Thomas, Haden, and Mack and I'd say our offseason moves via the draft, re-signing our own players, and UDFA have been pretty good recently.

I think you're referring to past regimes, which is unfair to our current group. Farmer and Pettine have only had 1 season, while Haslam has only had 2. Our "draft history" and "lack of development" are irrelevant right now until this group has a chance to prove their worth. So far, in one offseason I'd say they've shown they can build a good team... they just need to find a QB to steer the ship, which is not an easy task by any means...

I know it's early but Grossi may have got this spot on judging by tonight.

That is the only way to build a contender. In a hard cap sport you must have the ability to evaluate and draft talent. That's why the Browns have struggled since 1999 more bust than boom in the early rounds. While I think Farmer fit that mold last year he did show promise after round 1 and Gilbert still has a chance at proving me wrong. This year Farmer needs to get a stud at 12 or 19 and continue his spot on evaluation of the later rounds and UDFAs.

that all sounds great,.but when you have as many holes as the Browns do every year at draft time its time to stop tradeing up and wasting picks. How about they use all 10 picks on quality players since they aren't spending any money on free agents.

Right. I just don't understand the failure of some to recognize how much this regime has accomplished in such a short time. They have worked with a passion that had been missing in Cleveland for FAR too many years.

I'm having a great time watching their plan unfold.

Why not been building thru the draft since 99. Guess they can pick up where Heckertt left off.

There's a lot of high priced free agents out there. When a player reaches his prime it's all about the big pay day. Revis just signed a huge contract. His third in as many years. The Browns should fill their needs through the draft. Last year the Raiders signed a ton of free agents and so did the Bucaneers.

They gotta stop trading away their picks and learn how to draft!

DAMN THE TORPEDOES! FULL SPEED AHEAD!

Building through the draft is a fine concept......but when you draft those players who then leave right when they are hitting their prime it sort of undermines the whole concept, no?

I mean, we are losing the likes of Cameron, Sheard, Skrine, maybe some others. Guys we drafted what? No more than 5 years ago?

So....build through the draft and just when these players are starting to get good let them go elsewhere?

It is possible that it is not a function of this team wanting to build through the draft....but a function of wanting to build through THEIR drafts.....and the drafts that were conducted before they got here be damned. I guess that happens a lot. A lot of these pro personell guys and coaches are loyal to the people they have chosen, and are not loyal to people already on their team.

And so far the building through the draft....under Ray Farmer has garnered us Justin Gilbert and Johnny Manziel in the first round....those have sucked so far, and it has gotten us some decent later rounders: Bitonio/West/Desir...maybe/Kirksey.

OK, you have 10 picks.....I expect 3-4 Pro Bowlers to come from these 10 picks.

As I see it, the Browns are on the RIGHT TRACK. Building through the draft requires

drafting players who love the game, and fit your locker room.

Otherwise, they are in it for only the money, and they'll bail at the first chance to go

                              and make more.

Some players want to stay where they are, pay them fairly, and you build a team.

Players who love the game want to win. I'm pretty sure that there has never been a mock draft

that was accurate around here, ever. It isn't all that easy. But at least I finally have a ton of respect

for the Browns coaches and FO to start heading for the playoffs, and I won't be surprised if those

playoffs happen for the Browns this next season. It's great to add a few FA's here and there along the way, sure.

There's no other option to the draft to building a team. The cap sees to that.

The draft is the only place you can accumulate enough affordable, quality players to be competitive year after year. As holes become apparent you temporarily plug them with quality FAs.

This is especially true once you have your franchise QB, who you must pay and retain for his useful life.

                                    That's actually true.

I'm not sure I have a clue what you are talking about.

I think the point I am making is that building through the draft is fine......but we keep "rebuilding" through the draft. We often do not allow the concrete to settle before tearing down and starting over.

it's not to say that at all, but if all you've got is to come on here and bitch then what good are you? is there anything positive about this org that you'd like to talk about? cuz if there is i haven't seen it in as long as you've been here.

you want to be a fan, fine. i don't care what kind of fan. but please can you whiners just stop whining or drink some wine or something because you're unbearable.

sammy watkins, twatwatter, farmer texting, haslam corrupt, blah blah blah blah blah.

you want to yap your negativity so much do us all a favor and take it somewhere else.........pleez. or better yet save up your money from your paper route so one day you can buy a team and do what you want with it. then my grandchildren's kids can go to your team's forum and bitch about how bad you suck.

                                        buster.

Humor, baby ! Kick ass humor!

We're Browns fans, we need that more around here.

                                          That, and a great draft.

I believe Canton Mike and I will be going to the draft party again...

                                          Anybody else planning to go?
