Jets Reportedly Looking For A Quarterback
-
The New York Jets are in the market for another quarterback, and they're not opposed to trading up from the sixth overall pick in the NFL draft, Rich Cimini of ESPN New York reports.
Connect the dots, and the result should intensify the Marcus Mariota speculation.
General manager Mike Maccagnan and coach Todd Bowles dropped the hints Thursday during a conference call with season-ticket holders. The Jets already traded this offseason for veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who will challenge incumbent Geno Smith for the starting job.
Bowles, however, said Thursday that he'd like to add another to the mix."We want competition at every position," Bowles said. "Ryan is going to compete, as well as Geno is going to compete, and we hope to add somebody else to compete with them, along with [Matt] Simms."
The Jets have been linked for months to Mariota, the Heisman Trophy winner from Oregon. On March 28, Bowles and Maccagnan led a six-man Jets contingent to Eugene, Oregon, where they conducted a private workout with him."Sitting at six is a very good spot to be in," Maccagnan said. "It does allow us the potential to move up in the draft because we're not far from the first pick."
Mariota isn't making it past the Jets, I'm sure. Maccagnan has been on fire throughout most of this FA period. Landing one of the top two QB prospects at #6 would only be icing on the cake.
HOWEVER
If I'm the Browns and Mariota slides all the way to the Jets, I'm calling Maccagnan and I'm offering Manziel +12 + a third to jump up and take him. On picks alone, that's only about a 300 point differential for them...and they'd also be getting a QB to compete. If you quantify Johnny based on the spot he was picked, the Jets come out on top in that trade by about 400 points.

Hi everybody. New York Jets here. Just wanted to remind everybody that even though we don't really want to take Mariota if he drops to where we pick we want you to think we really really do so that you overpay for our pic. Thanks don't tell anybody, okay?

one ringy dingy. two ringy dingys.
seems no one is at home.
if i'm the browns i might make that call but i'm not trading both first rounders and who wants manziel at this point and time?
i like mariota but i like petty, hundley and grayson as well and we wouldn't have to give up anything for them.

I agree with this... I like Mariota just fine but I'm not giving up anything to draft him. If my some miracle he makes it to 12 then fine otherwise, good luck to him whereever he lands.

My best Sonny Weaver impression.
Browns move 12 (1200 pts) + Manziel + third rounder (210 pts) for Jets 6 (1600 pts).
Browns draft Malcolm Brown at 6.
Mariota falls since Chicago, Atlanta, NYG and St. Louis won't need him.
Browns then trade their 19 (900 pts) + Gordon (almost worthless but they need a receiver) + second round pick (460 pts) for Minnesota's 11 (1250 pts) + third round (215 pts).
Browns draft Mariota at 11.
From the Browns standpoint:
The Browns moved from 12 and 19 to 6 and 11, and only lost a second round pick. As an added bonus, they've rid themselves of a possible quarterback distraction and a possible WR suspension.
From the Vikings standpoint:
The Vikings turned their 11 into a 19, but a third into a high second, plus they get a potential #1 receiver.
From the Jets standpoint:
Fuck the Jets, they deserve this.
(If you think the above is what I really expect to happen, you're an idiot.)

Brown over Shelton at #6? Now that's crazy...
Too bad we did not have a crazy speculation thread.

I'd trade Johnny and a 3rd to move up for Mariota
