The Grades
Same order as last week as there was no compelling reason to change it.
As I have said before, I have been surprised many times by who ends up with what total. Maybe thats a sign of objectivity? But that still does not mean that I do not get surprised. This week is a perfect example. I would not have expected the grades to fall like they did this week. Nor would I have expected two of our better O-line to grade negative. But as you will see
Mitchell Schwartz: 1st +13-6 net +7 w/ 1D+&1D-; 2nd +6-8 net -2 w/ 3D-; Game Totals: +19-14 net +5
- Reversion to the mean comes to mind looking at Mitchs score for the week. His punch was missing this week.
- Mitch received D-'s for: giving up a sack to a speed rush (S5P1) Im still not sure how McC held onto the ball; not picking up stunt (S8P3); having Double team with Greco split yielding a pressure (S9P3); and being shed by eventual tackler of Crow for short gain (S10P2).
- His lone D+ came for a pretty chip plus 2nd-level, reverse-seal effort at the POA (S5P4) on a Crow negated by a Mack hold.
- A very strong second half by John powered him to his fourth, double-digit, positive performance in a row.
- John received three D-'s this week. Here they are: was absolutely shucked by his opposite stopping an early run by Crow for -1 (S2P1); yielded a pressure when beaten by an inside rip (S5P6); and his half of the split Double-team with Schwartz (S9P3).
- Greco's four, second-half D+'s came for: a beautiful, POA turn and seal on a short run by Crow (S10P4); a great second level block on a second Crow run two plays later (S10P6); a gorgeous chip plus 2nd-level block on yet another Crow run (S11P1); and reverse, drive block on another Crow run (S11P5). Another big finale for this years steadiest OL so far and easily our best run blocking performance of the game, if not the year.
- After getting his head above water in Week 3, Alex submerged again vs. SD under the weight of his 6 D-'s for the game. Six!
- The first two D-'s were earned for line calls or lack thereof. See the Line Calls thread for details, but in a nutshell: First, in a 5-vs-5 we did not slide our protection out allowing a big, free-run hit on McC (S1P3); Second, in a 7-vs-5 we leave a TE (Dray) solo on an LB and a RB (Duke) solo on a DB both were beaten leading to the strip sack of McC (S2P3).
- Here are the stories behind the other 4 D-'s: forgot snap count for the 2nd week in a row (S3P5); holding call when failed to get angle to make block (S5P4); failed to get off chip and get to 2nd level block (S8P2); and failed to make block on screen to Duke (S8P8). On the screen he tried in vain to clean up Bitos whiff, a wasted effort when other makeable blocks were available.
- Alex's lone D+ came for a very pretty and very powerful turn and drive of a D-lineman (S8P6).
- This week was the fourth slow start in a row by Bito. The difference this week was he never really got going.
- Bitos four D-'s are: gave up inside gap shot limiting a Duke carry to 3 (S3P1); bulled into McC's lap on TD pass to Duke (S4P4); a false start penalty (S8P4a); and whiffing on the screen pass block (S8P8).
- Joel's 1st D+ came for stopping two rushers in the pass attempt to Bowe (S6P3). His 2nd and 3rd came for line-collapsing, drive blocks on a Duke run (S10P4) and a Crow run (S11P1).
- I cant remember a game when Joe did not get at least one D+ cant say that anymore.
- Two of Joes D-'s came along with Alexs line call dings. Joe's third was for a clean whiff of an inside rush that almost blew up a McC's pretty cross to Benji (S10P3).
- Nothing of note in a couple of 3TE set appearances.
TEs:
- Barn: +3-5 net -2 w/ 2D- One D- for the block fail on the strip sack and the other for the PI call.
- Dray: +2-4 net -2 w/ 1D+&2D- D+ for pretty kick out block (S5P4). D-s for: whiff at POA (S2P1) and another POA fail (S5P2).
- Housler: MIA
- M. Johnson: +2-4 net -2 w/ 2D- Actually knocked an LB down.. but LB was already engaged by Dray. D-'s for getting blown back as lead blocker (S2P1) and whiffing as a lead blocker (S5P4).
- Crow: +0-0 net 0 Nothing this week... except some good running and some not so good.
- Duke: +3-4 net -1 w/1D+&1D- D+ for blocking blitzing LB into the air (S7P7) and D- for missed blitz p/u leading to sack he ran right by the blitzer (S10P7).
- Draughn: +0-0 net 0 Nada.
- Gabe: +0-0 net 0 Surprisingly nothing noted
- Benji: nope
- Hart: nein
- Hawk: +1-1 net 0 had a cut block and a miss.
- Bowe: +1-0 net +1 I shit you not he screened off a DB (S4P3).
1. Our run game
Some better signs. Still some missed holes and not enough patience approaching the line, but on the positive side this qualified as a hole this week as it should in the ZBS.
The above is the first time I recall seeing our backs pressing the line before making that one-cut that makes the ZBS work.
Flip I saw a Pistol run this week. Bad Flip
2. Our RB Corps
Last week I called for more Draughn. Injury limited him, but he looked good in the one run he had. Also still looking forward to Turbin.
Crow had some good runs, but also made some head scratcher choices. Good to see him break a stretch zone (see Pic above) and also break a big check down pass.
Duke continued to show his value as a passing-down RB both in catching and blocking. Had a couple decent carries, but should focus on featuring him in passing situations.
M.Johnson saw less time due to more SG formation employed. I still want to see Bibbs.
3. Pass Blocking

Is Shanny running the same ZBS? Freeman's vision see's something we don't have? Atl. had one of the worst OL last season, what the hell happened thanxs

I can't address what is going on in ATL as I have only seen highlights.
As for the ZBS... I'm sure there are some subtle differences among teams that use it, but at its core it's the same reactionary, run-blocking scheme wherever it's employed. I can say we ran more stretch ZBS, i.e., "sweeps", last year under Young Shanny.

ATL is the #1 rated OL at PFF

Yeah, been seeing good press about Shanny in Atl. Maybe he's a wiz after all.
What's the fix here? Is it gonna take a full year to get Mack back to his asskicking self? Dude's gonna be a FA after this year, right? Is it time to try Erving at Center?

All during the draft it was said Cam is not a true Center. More NFL suited for G or T. Cam as a Rookie would be better suited at G with help. You slide Joel or Greco to C you lose Mack that same day. From the grading, Joel better step it up too or Cam may be rotating Joel.

Sweet Tour, thanks. When calculating the final grade for an individual player do you actually subtract 2 points for D-? And add 2 for D+? Always assumed you did but looking over the grades today I wasn't sure. Looking forward to doing these this week.
-
Sorry, war... swore I answered this yesterday.
Yes, D's earn or cost the lineman 2 points.
-
Sorry if I asked already.

Double D scoring.. Nice.
And some people think grading is boring...
