Kruger Knows What You're Feeling Mario

The Browns Board

  • Kruger sucks.

  • one of the worse FA signings by the org since new ownership.

this is a QB driven league and you have to have playmakers............just ask the cowboy fans this morning and the bengals fans tomorrow.

  • bs, unless you were making a joke, Canton Dawg. Kruger doesn't suck... he isn't a coverage lb, unless it's a TE he covers.

Time and time again, this defensive coaching staff keeps trying to micromanage all contingencies with

complications, and they don't do the things that the players are best at. They just have a system, and it

doesn't work, and I think they keep screwing with it more and more ti fix it...and more and more miscommunications

    whatever...

keep happening. If the defense starts working the last three games.... I have to believe they finally realized it's on

them, the coaches, and finally went to the drawing board a bit.

The last game, the defensive line coach came up with a pass rush scheme for that game. Really. After all this time...

it seemed like Pettine said to him "damn, my defense sucks... will you try to fix it before we all end up fired?

and there ya. The Browns finally had winsies with defensies.. no more coaches with blindsies...

  • You're right cal, he isn't a coverage guy, or a RB tackling machine. Come to think of it, he's isn't much of a QB sack artist either. The stats don't lie.

  • okay, that's funny...

    but think about this:

I see a guy who loves the game, who has grown in the league. NOTE: he's listed at 6'4" and 270 lbs.

He is not a guy who can run with but there are a lot of other factors that are in play here -

competition twice a year, scheme, etc. His stats are low this year... and last year he had ELEVEN

SACKS. So, it isn't his ability that is in question, unless he's been playing banged up or something..

I say it's on the coaches,...they implemented their entire defense this year, and it ends up

being a counter-productive business. It isn't that Kruger can only get one sack and one tackle like

    he did in 2010....

  • 2.5 sacks thru 13 games from the team's sack specialist is pathetic.

  • look at last year. Eleven sacks is not pathetic. Think about that.

WHAT CHANGED? It isn't that Kruger did.

    So?

The coaching staff didn't change either.

My guess is Kruger benefitted by having a strong edge rusher coming from the opposite side of the line (i.e. Jabal Sheard).

  • kruger is a guy that needs help getting to the QB, not a bull rushing knock people over or make a fancy move guy. someone on the offense has to miss their assignment for him to succeed.

So is Mario Williams all of a sudden handcuffed to the same scheme.

When Kruger was on a Superbowl Championship team his ability to hurry and sack the passer throughout the post season had us competing with his former DC from Baltimore (Chuck Pagano) and we had more money.

  • Well....you know Im happy to take this one on......

Not sure why you're trying to lay Buffalo and Rexy's problems on Pettines back, considering Buffalo set their sack record at 57 with Pettine and NOW they have 19....heck of a drop off.....

    1) This is an old article that keeps making the rounds. Id first point out that is is a misnomer to say Pettine and Rexy have the same D's. Rexy is running a 4-3 in Buffalo, while Pettine ran his hybrid multi front 3-4 there and here...

    2) Williams is complalining about frequently having to drop into coverage. Id point out the he is a 4-3 DE and Kruger is a 3-4 OLB.....and there IS a difference....(plus, Wiiliams is a heck of a pass rusher and Kruger isnt).....

    • 2013(under Pettine)....Williams dropped into coverage 7 times the WHOLE season....
    • 2014............................Williams dropped into coverage 13 times the whole season....
    • 2015............................Williams dropped into coverage 20 time so far....

So.....CLEARLY.....Rexy is having him cover WAY more then Pettine did, but still only 20 times(just over once a game)(whiny)

Kruger has the EXACT same #'s he had in 2013 & 2012....so it's not like he's fallen off. He's had one good season ever(in terms of sacks at least) and that was last year under Pettine.....the other 6 years he's played, he's basically sucked......and, LAST YEAR, he only had 11 sacks and nothing else.....terrible against the run......

NOW.....lets look at Krugers coverage(Ive posted this several times, but it seems not to be sinking in)......

    • 2012(Baltimore)....Kruger dropped into coverage 97 times or 6.0 times per game....
    • 2013(Chud)...........Kruger dropped into coverage 109 times or 6.8 times per game....
    • 2014(Pettine)........Kruger dropped into coverage 65 times or 4.0 times per game...
    • 2015(Pettine)........Kruger dropped into coverage 58 times or 4.4 times per game...

And the facts dont lie.....Kruger is covering LESS now than he ever has.....and whats happening in Buffalo is NOT what happened in Buffalo when Pettine was there.....Plain and simple....

Now,.....Please.....Stop making up stories Cal.....I thought you were more objective than that.....

    What changed from last year???.........

    1) Sheard isnt pushing the other side, which got Kruger 4 sacks last year......

    2) He;s getting blocked out. Last year 2 were unblocked sacks.....(there's 6)....

    3) Our DB's are not defending well, meaning the opposing QB's are not holding the ball....meaning not enough time for Kruger to get er done.....

    4) Finally.....his snaps have now been cut drastically....WHY???.....cause Orchard and Armonty are getting to the QB at 2 and 3 times the efficiency that Kruger is....and they can do it within this system, while Kruger apparently cannot ....

OK, I answered your question "what has changed?"....so my question is....WHAT CHANGES when Armonty goes in ????

Buffalo is not Cleveland....Rexy is not Pettine.....A 4-3 DE is not a 3-4 OLB....and Paul Kruger aint no Mario Williams....

  • Kruger may not outright "suck"...cause that would imply he doesn't belong on an NFL field and he's clearly shown he can hang. He's just not very skilled. He made his contract with us by playing basically as a dropback DE for Blt. That year that Suggs got hurt, I read the article of how the infamous Blt 3-4 began lining up predominantly as a 4-3 over 60% of their snaps. They used Kruger as a pure pass rusher that would drop back every now and then but only in zone.

Kruger was a different cat when he played for Blt. You can see it in footage of him. He was listed at 280 when we signed him, he was probably well into the 280's. Dude used his strength to go through or around tackles. He can't do it anymore. He had already lost enough weight, ie leverage, his first year under Horton that he couldn't power around the edge anymore. Still had his bulrush though. So when we signed him we said now Paul, you have to become a complete 3-4 OLB'er for us. And he tried, i'll give him credit. But he was never a 3-4 OLB'er. Somebody possibly ruined what might have been a decent career for him as a pass rushing 4-3 DE, by telling him he should try being an OLB'er.

There's another kid that I think the same happened to, Bjoern Werner for Indy. He was a "stud" 4-3 DE for FSU, at one point they thought he might go #1 too. He played with all kinds of leverage in college. I saw tape of him holding off a pair of enormous offensive lineman that tried to wash him out. He held them off for a second, than got low and disappeared...then reappeared somewhere off to the side. Was fucking ridiculous, until Bosa I hadn't seen a college player squat the edge like Werner. In run defense he would jump off the edge like he was pass rushing but then just stop and squat down like an immovable Golem and you'd see the tackles shoulder pads popping up. And his reaction time off the line in pass rush was "world class", even in the NFL. But someone said hey Bjoern talk about how you'd be happy as a pig in shit to play 3-4 OLB'er.

Fast forward to his first game in Indy and I'm watching a completely different player. He's getting washed out by a TE. His pads are higher, he looks smaller...etc, etc. They completely ruined the natural leverage he played with in college. I'm not even sure if he's still on Indy's roster. I guess he became a pretty good run stopper last I read of him but just nonexistent as a pass rusher. I don't understand who the fucktards are that keep telling natural DE's that they need to play standup and go out into deep coverage against slot WR's. I'm gettin real tired of this 3-4 BS to be honest. They've gotten way too gimmicky. Pgh and Blt's 3-4's...and SF's 3-4 from a couple years ago when they had Aldon and Justin next to each other....of course yes. But those were defense's with rational player allignments. Aldon was their jack strong side like Harrison was in Pgh. Zone was about all they did in coverage with those guys. SF also had the luxury of having two of the best ILB'ers playing of course, but they also didn't have another jack type on the field opposite of Aldon. In fact I couldn't name who their will was. I think they just used 2nd string types. They were only asking them to do so much.

So I don't know what Pettine is trying to run here. And apparently some of the cats in Buffalo are wondering wtf Ryan is trying to run. I remember when we played Buffalo in preseason where they werent' doing nothing fancy with their front 7. I was just like wow..this is another food chain. They were "effortlessly" in our backfield it seemed like. I thought him and Hughes would have over 20 sacks between them at this point. But a couple weeks into the season I saw that their defense was having issues and I looked it up, and sure enough there's an article wondering just wtf is Ryan doing with this defense. I think I watched the first NE game and I was like who are these guys? They were hardly doing anything from what I saw them do in pre season. This is what happens when coaches over complicate the fuck out of defense's. Ryan has a unit "very" comparable to Carolina's in terms of talent....and look at the difference in production.

Is it easy to sack people in coverage or did Mario Williams have a legit scheme-induced gripe? If you understand the point of the article - you understand the same exact drop off in sack volume.

If you understand Buffalos Defense, you also understand it set records under Pettine for sacks....not the same D....not the same coach....and not the same alignments......

Kruger has had 310 opportunities to rush the passer and only hit home 3 times......thats once every 100 rushes....and thats pathetic for ANY system and far and away the worst on the Browns.....Armonty gets there every 39 attempts...Orchard every 50....

    and they cover too.....

I also noticed how important it was for you to leave out Kruger had 4.5 sacks in the post season punctuated with a Superbowl Championship against playoff caliber competition, which helped him write his own ticket in FA following his best extract of football against his highest level of competition in a world where timing is everything.

Just another effort to discredit Pettine....but without any stats or facts.....just the same innuendo weve been hearing for weeks, without any backing....

Probably the reason he's using the Buffalo article to back his argument, because there are no facts, stats or articles relating to Cleveland that will support this Kruger coverage argument....

  • Another thing I don't understand is why does Pettine get the blame for Kruger's poor performance on the field, yet he doesn't get any credit for Kruger's career season in 2014?

    Makes no sense.

Right.....and the same can be said for many other players......it's called "an agenda"......

Lynch mob mentality is rarely rational....
