If BK had played under today's rules
-
As we all know the last really top notch QB the Browns have had is Bernie Kosar. And as we all know, he career was vastly shortened injuries suffered from the many hits he had taken in his career.
Now, just think how well perhaps he could have performed if the rules protecting QBs today were in place in his era. The guy closest to Kosar playing today is: Tom Brady. Tall, lean, not athletic partiularly. Extremely intelligent and accurate. Could the Browns have taken the step up to win a Super Bowl if these kinds of rules were in place? No way of telling....but his career would likely have been lengthened.

Rivers is a better comp, 6'5 with a bit of a sidearm sling.
Both (brady and Rivers) move a lot better in the pocket, Bernie was dreadful in that department.
And it only takes one hit to fuck up your shoulder. You still get hit. He fucked up his shoulder, they didn't. Yes, it could have been reversed under any rules.
But I don't think he would have had a particularly long career under these rules because he still would have been a target with his slow feet and wind up. But he sure threw a nice, accurate pass when he was healthy. Beautiful deep ball.

Well, its just a theory. The plain fact of the matter is that he got the hell beat out of him after Cody Risien retired...and today's rules may have helped to keep him healthier longer.

The killshot happened on a day Cody Risien was starting though, in 1988 on a blitz from Derrick Thomas.
Kosar's arm as never the same, he needed more wind up time and he did indeed get killed behind a weakened offensive line as he got even slower and the defenders got even faster.
I think if the Browns would have replaced Cody Risien with a stud and the current rules were applied at the time, you still would have seen Kosar decline rapidly because of slow feet and slow release. That still gets you killed today. Brady has neither.

If I may inflect...you can more rules also. Like the pass interference calls and loosed rules of covering.

the game today may be too fast for Kosar too.. the defensive linebackers are bigger and faster. I was always pissed that Modell didnt go all out to protect Kosdar with the best possible lineman .. The line we had was ok.. but it was not elite.. Mike Baab was a pretty average center
IMO.. Cody risen was too slow.. Greg Rackozy was a bitch and John Reinstra was a mental case.. Freddie Childress was a fat tub of goo!
