OT question

  • I have a similar take on the OT, in that most teams place their best OT on the QB's blind side(usually LT)......which would mean most college tackles that find themselves in the NFL draft are LT's. The best ones stay at LT and the others get rotated to RT.....

A simplistic description, that Im sure has exceptions. but I would wager it is by far the rule in the majority of cases.....

I see safety as a position that needs to morph or play like an associate position....so, for me, the simplistic description is FS has the skill set of a hard hitting CB and can cover well and tackle well;.....he will have speed and range....coverage skills and open field tackling trump run support

SS, on the other hand, is closer to a linebacker who can cover......so I see a harder hitter, who plays up and can take the roll of LB in running downs.....probably a thicker body and less speed than your average FS.....tackling and run support trump coverage skills and hands...

One proviso though on the L or R thing. Some teams like the OSUs Bamas, etc. are so loaded with talent that their RTs are just as talented as their LT and it's a coin flip on which plays which side.

Well when you have an embarrassment of riches so great that Parade All-Americans are S/T'ers...

Are there still Parade AA's or is it McDonald's now? Retiring minds want to know...

A lot of them started on the right side in college.

True... just as in the Pros you put your best at LT, 2nd best at RT and see if the RT develops enough to assume the LT mantel.

And if you get a rotation going where your LTs are Jr/Sr and your RT Jr or under... mores the better...

And that 5* LB they wrote up is the best player we've signed on D since........................MG. He's already early enrolled and I will be watching him in the spring game this coming Sat.

  • Just struck me that the powerhouse Catholic football school thing is a northern thing...

Sitting here trying to think of a Texas version of a Cleveland St. Josephs or St. Eds... Is there a Shake(?) Jesuit either in Dallas or Houston?

  • One proviso though on the L or R thing. Some teams like the OSUs Bamas, etc. are so loaded with talent that their RTs are just as talented as their LT and it's a coin flip on which plays which side. Also some of their Gs make the transition to OTs as they lose players to the draft. Had to play that talent somewhere on the field, so they get "parked" until their time comes.

I can agree with this......and, in those instances, rather than the "best" guy on the left.....Id expect the faster(more athletic) player to go left and the stronger-slower player on the right.....

Jake Matthews played RT while Luke Joeckel played left and switched to LT his senior year when Luke went pro. Jake is now Atlanta's starting Superbowl LT.

And "little brother" Luke Matthews, the 4th of four sons of Bruce to play at A&M, has verbally committed to sign with us in 2018 and is considered by the other 3 brothers to be the best of the bunch.

It's not done here. Private school prospects are approached with great caution south of about Tennessee.

  • Gary Kubiak came out of one of those in Houston.

From Wiki: "Kubiak passed for a then state-record 6,190 yards as a quarterback for St. Pius X High School of Houston, Texas, where he was given the nickname "Koob". Twice named to the all-state football, basketball, baseball, and track teams, he was inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame in 1999. Kubiak graduated St. Pius X in 1978."

  • OTs...

LTs tend to be drafted more and higher as they tend to be the better of those at the college level... same as the pros. Doesn't mean a college RT won't be drafted, e.g. our own Shon Coleman, but many aren't... at least not to play OT.

Most LTs, due to their superior athleticism, can make the transition and flip to the opposite side, but some can't and more are diminished by the move. Kind of a righty-lefty thing.

Ever try brushing your teeth using your other hand?

    Safeties...

Not really my area, but I see the classic FS and SS skill sets being different. I think of FSs being more suited to pass support and zone coverage. Meanwhile when I think SSs, I think run support and man coverage.

One thing in common is that both should be very sure tacklers being in more last line of defender positions during play, but even in that SSs are more often comparative "thumpers" to FSs.

As the game has changed, passing has increaased though, it seems the differences have lessened and interchangeability has increased in value.
