Browns president gives insight into new season
By Steve Doerschuk
CantonRep.com staff writer
Browns President Mike Keenan, somewhat an invisible man since joining the team amid the Phil Savage-John Collins storm of 2005-06, turned face man during a visit to Canton.
The boss of the team’s business side came across as very plugged into the football domain.
Keenan’s speech Monday to the Hall of Fame Luncheon Club and an interview afterward left a few grass stains. A few key topics:
THE RECEIVING CORPS
The 2008 Browns averaged a paltry 148.8 passing yards per game. Only Oakland (148.1) was worse.
Yet the Browns traded away tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. Keenan explained:
“We feel comfortable having Steve Heiden, who’s coming off a hand injury, but he’d been healthy; Martin Rucker, who we drafted last year; and Robert Royal. The production among the three of them compared to what Kellen put in there. ... We feel that’s something we can work with, as well as getting a draft pick.”
It was the first public indication that the team thinks highly of Rucker, a Round 4 pick last year.
The Round 2 pick turned into Georgia wideout Mohamed Massaquoi. Earlier in Round 2, the Browns picked Ohio State wideout Brian Robiskie.
“He’s an academic All-American,” Keenan said. “I don’t think we’re trying to win the Quiz Bowl, but we are looking for intelligent players.”
Braylon Edwards remains the No. 1 wideout.
“People forget, Braylon got spiked by another player in training camp,” Keenan said. “He missed a lot of training camp. ... We hope he has a great season.”
Keenan did not mention Donté Stallworth, other than to allude to his role in the spiking.
GOOD 32, BAD 32
The Browns are getting some depressing press. Peter King of Sports Illustrated places them at No. 32 in his first preseason power ratings.
In the face of such negativity, the team is looking to famous faces from the past. Jim Brown, who wore No. 32 during a glorious Browns career, addressed rookies during a minicamp. According to Keenan, Brown told them:
“Give me a chance to be 21 again. Give me a chance to get among you. I may not be as big. I may not be as fast. But I’ll be tenacious. I’ll bring it every single day. I’ll take responsibility for being good.”
Brown turned 73 on Feb. 17.
STILL IN TRAINING
It is astounding that Charlie Frye appeared in 20 games and threw 567 passes in his first two Browns seasons, whereas Brady Quinn played in four games and threw 97 passes in his first two years.
After all, Frye was a third-round pick, Quinn a first-rounder.
Quinn’s inactivity is a big factor in how the new regime is representing its quarterback situation.
“Look back at last year,” Keenan said. “Brady was in 21⁄2 games, so there wasn’t a whole lot of game film for (Head Coach Eric Mangini and General Manager George Kokinis) to look at. I think once we get out on the practice field, they’ll be able to assess this, so I ask you to be patient and may the better man win.”
Brown, incidentally, is among those who were sold on Quinn as a winning quarterback by early last year.

Quinn has never competed for the starting position of QB for the Cleveland Browns.he's on the team, so he's competing for a starting position.
I think what you're trying to say is that he hasn't been competitive.

when Anderson runs to the media cryingyeah Anderson runs to the media.... good one.
Hey has Quinn made his ANNUAL TELEVISION STATEMENT ABOUT WINNING THE STARTING JOB YET?
He's ZERO for TWO so far, by the way.

I know in your imagination you want to believe that Anderson beat out Quinn, but that's never happened. After the ridiculous contract Savage gave Anderson (the one that got him fired) he was force to start Anderson no matter what. You can't give somebody that type of money then hold an open competition. By default Anderson was the starter, and the disasterous results that came from that decision is mainly what led to our 4-12 record.
Anderson gets coaches and FO fired.
Quinn is going to beat the snot out of Anderson this summer, but hey at least when Anderson runs to the media crying he can at least whine about how the offense was tailored to suit Quinn and not him, then refer to the fact he beat Quinn in college. Hahahahahaha....
I don't believe Anderson being the starter for this team is what "mainly" led to the 4-12 season. His poor play was a factor, but even worse was the fact for what was it? 5-6 games the Browns had to start either Ken Dorsey or Bruce Gradkowski. Those guys were far far worse than DA. And the fact that our defense sucked sewer water was no great help either.

In three years of Preseason play, DA has had the opportunity to throw roughly 3/4s the passes that Quinn has in two years. BQ even got more pass attempts than DA in '07... 45 pass attempts vs. 42. Maybe Anderson didn't beat him, but it's curious that Quinn got more work and couldn't beat DA.

choco, please explain what you mean? What blame is Quinn supposed to take exactly? He outperformed DA in the preaseason yet still didn't start,
He played more. Quinn managed all of one TD in preseason '08... despite playing good portions of 4 games, you call that outplayed? It's sad that he didn't play well enough that the Brown's had to start a QB they said had issues with sunlight due to a concussion come regular season.

an here's my point.....
head in the sand. lemme guess, now we're going to hear how crenel held him outta practice and duct tapes a baseball bat over his elbow so he couldn't throw.....
its everyone fault but quinns......and yet, when engaged, you can only deflect.

Truthful and realistic is more like it. BQ played all preseason, threw only 1 TD pass, had a 1/1TD to int ratio - something DA was criticized for doing the previous year. DA missed most of preseason, started practice again on the 1st of September for a game on the 7th, practiced INSIDE because he still had light sensitivity, Crennel was quoted that week as saying they wanted to try DA outside for one practice before making the call... sounds as though his health was pretty questionable for a starting NFL QB to me.
You've got idiots on this board acting as though DA was game ready, as well as others who were battling injury and swollen gonads at the time, all along coming into that first game. Quinn should have started, is it possible the coaches weren't overly impressed with his preseason?

And again your using the argument against Quinn that since the last coach/FO didn't think he was all that great then it must be so, when that last coach/FO is no longer with the team. They were fired due to poor performance, so really dude how can you use their judgment as a valid marker for where Quinn is in his development?
And again man, nobody on here is saying it's a lock that Quinn is going to be the answer. Nobody has made that claim on this message board except maybe in passing when chicken shitting with Lumnuts to get him riled up. However we have to see what we have in him, he's a first round QB that has not gotten a fair shake. We already know what we have in DA and that's not nearly good enough to get us where we need to be.
Very good point many of us hope BQ is the answer because we know DA isnt the answer and i dont think mangini will start BQ if he doesnt think he can win but nobody has said BQ is the answer he could be and we would like to see what he has....

That makes no sense. Ok, DA was criticized for having a 1/1 ratio, and Quinn did the same thing yet he wasn't deemed "good enough" to start? No, this goes back to the stubbornness of RAC to play his "vets" over unproven young guys. Are we to believe that Jerome Harrison also wasn't good enough to challenge Lewis for more playing time?

Many posters here pointed out DA's preseason int in '07 and that he "lost" to Charlie Frye. He wasn't deemed "good enough" to start in '07, so why should it be any different for Quinn (who had a lot more playing time preseason '08 than DA did in preseason '07 by the way, but couldn't improve on DA's '07 preseason results) in '08.
I do agree that RAC had a stubbornness problem, especially in his sticking with Frye, who at his best was mediocre. It would be nice to see Harrison, especially when Lewis isn't moving the chains (I don't think it's over for Lewis just yet though, the guy's got ability).
I'm waiting to see what the current Coach/FO has to say on the QB's this fall, hopefully earlier. My guess is they'll choose who they think gives the Brown's the best chance to win. Many here just want to see Quinn, period, based solely on their dislike of DA, who hasn't played a full preseason schedule for the Browns the last couple of years, yet won more games than any QB in recent Browns history. Let the coaches decide, it may very well be Quinn, and good for him, but giving it to Quinn just because there's a bunch of idiots unhappy with the last Coaches and DA's results under them without a competition doesn't make sense. My guess and hope is that the coaches will make their decision by mid-summer after some OTAs/camps and dump one and give whoever they keep the benefit of a full fall preseason as the number 1 guy.
