    You referring to Ray Ray's potential victims? Tour says he is a shoe-in. Normally I would say "no doubt"....and supposedly "off field" matters are not supposed to play any part in the HOF selection process (aren't they?)....but....I still say that perhaps a sufficient number of the voters could still give Lewis a "time out" on his HOF induction because of the suspicion of his involvement in those deaths.

    Does character matter for HOF consideration at all? MLB somewhat thinks so. Good luck year one there with "flaws" in your background the way their balloting goes.

    But with this 2018 class 1. Moss 2. Lewis? 3. Everyone else.

    Lets put it this way: does character matter? Perhaps not in the written rules of HOF voting procedure....but do you think it does not come into play when those guys cast their ballots?

    Think about Terrell Owens. About as good of HOF credentials as you can get...yet he has been waiting for 2 years now simply because he has been viewed as a bit of an asshole to his teammates. What else is there? And think about the OJ situation.

    I think these voters may exercise some conservatism when it comes to things like this.

    Lewis...no doubt, based on on field performance is first ballot material.

    Nevertheless.....Hello!

    Almost 18 years worth of water under Ray's bridge... not going to hold back the 1st-ballot election when he is in the discussion of the greatest to ever play his position... especially considering his charitable work.

    T.O.? "Bit of an ass-hole" is being pretty generous. His team disruption led more than one to judge his talent as just not being worth the trouble. They drew a different conclusion for Moss. One is in his position's GOAT convo... one is not.

    Not following the OJ reference... he was inducted in '85.

    MLB HoF Guardians seems to primarily concern themselves with players who have chemically enhanced their performance with gamblers a close second.

    So, doing charitable work (perhaps to atone for his role in a double homicide) and being a great football player trumps concerns about his role in those murders? We shall see this coming January when it is time for the debate on the selections to come up.

    T.O.? "Bit of an ass-hole" is being pretty generous. His team disruption led more than one to judge his talent as just not being worth the trouble. They drew a different conclusion for Moss. One is in his position's GOAT convo... one is not.

    T.O. actual numbers are as good as Moss:

    Receptions:

    T.O. 1078 #8

    Moss 982 #15

    TDs:

    T.O. 153 #3

    Moss 156 #2

    Yards:

    T.O. 15934 #2

    Moss 15292 #3

    Not following the OJ reference... he was inducted in '85.

    Yes, but...if the accusations against him had come out prior to his induction...what would that have done to his chances of making it? They don't take people out...but I have heard some...even HOF electors say that they would like to.

    MLB HoF Guardians seems to primarily concern themselves with players who have chemically enhanced their performance with gamblers a close second.

    And murder...a distance what? 3rd? or further down?

  • I doubt there is significant concern over Ray's "role" in something for which he was never tried.

    Numbers don't automatically determine GOAT discussion inclusion or exclusion.

    Safe to assume OJ would have hurt his chances.

    MLB statement was in contrast to NFL, who has both the enhanced and gamblers in their HoF. I'm pretty sure both sports' voters would hold a murder conviction against a nominee.

    We shall see. I seem to recall one time that Tony Grossi.....a HOF voter, brought up the possibility at some point that this thing could be held over him.

    Numbers don't automatically determine GOAT discussion inclusion or exclusion.

    Not automatically....but in THIS case I think it is fair to look at them....because these guys are contemporaries. They played in the same era. If you were talking Don Hutson vs. Randy Moss, that is one thing. But at times these guys were on the same field opposite each other.

    But...lets end the argument: Neither is the GOAT. Neither has the numbers that Jerry Rice has. Neither had the work ethic that Jerry Rice had. (work ethic being Moss's biggest critique), Rice had no issues with his teammates...like T.O. had.

    Rice IS the GOAT....case closed!!! 😮

    Safe to assume OJ would have hurt his chances.

    Steroids is practically irrelevent to Pro Football HOF voters. Gambling? It didn't keep Paul Hornung out....but did it keep Alex Karras out? Not likely...he was borderline anyway....even though he should be in just for being Mongo!!

  • The speeches I don't strongly care about as most are pretty generic. If one is exceptionally good, it's pretty easy to catch it at a later time.

    The game though? Hell yeah, football is back. Pre-season gets a little boring, but you bet your bottom dollar it'll be on the TV.

  • Did they finish the HOF game last year or year before? Or am I thinking of something else?

    Are you referring to the paint on the field not dry and the NFL HOF Game was canceled?

    What a PR and logistical disaster for the NFL. Maybe next time hire someone to check the details like what paint they're using on a nationally televised season opening game. 😆

    ~~~~~~~~~~~
    SINCE YOU ASKED.....
    .....The official return of pro football will have to wait another four days. The NFL canceled Sunday night's Hall of Fame Game because of poor field conditions. The Green Bay Packers and Indianapolis Colts are headed back home.
    "I was notified at about 5:30 that there was a problem at midfield and in the end zones with some of the painting that it was kind of congealing and rubberized, which meant players might slip on it," Pro Football Hall of Fame president David Baker told NFL Media's Steve Wyche. "The folks with the field tried to remediate that by dropping some other pellets but after talking to the coaches and staff for both the Packers and the Colts, there was a concern they might be able to remediate it but they would have to do something underneath the surface.
    "We think we could make it playable, that it might be playable now but if there is any concern, anything in the minds of players we want to err on the side of player safety. This is the Pro Football Hall of Fame. You've heard me many, many times talk about our values of commitment, integrity, courage, respect, and excellence. If we don't have that integrity to respect our players and respect their safety, then we shouldn't be doing this job. It was a difficult decision to make. ... But in some respects, it was an easy, ethical decision.
    "When the field was put down -- this was a brand-new field that had only been used one year at the Superdome in New Orleans -- when it came here, it passed the safety tests. This morning when the cover was taken off, it passed the safety tests then. But I think the concerns were really about the painting and the rubberized surface."
    Fans will be offered full refunds from the Hall of Fame, according to Baker.
    The turf at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton will be replaced for next year's Hall of Fame Game, according to Wyche per a Hall source. All logos will be stitched into the surface so there will not be any issues like there were Sunday in which the field was deemed unfit for the Packers-Colts preseason opener.
    The change in turf was already planned and was not a reaction to Sunday's game problems.
    The NFL and NFLPA issued the following statement:
    "Due to safety concerns with the condition of the playing surface in Canton, tonight's game between the Indianapolis Colts and Green Bay Packers has been cancelled. We are very disappointed for our fans, but player safety is our primary concern, and as a result, we could not play an NFL game on this field tonight.".....
  • Wet paint caused the cancellation of a football game? What kind of hairy high school horseshit is that?
  • FWIW... Andy Reid said yesterday that the HoF field is in great shape... everyone knew what he meant.
  • They ripped out the turf in the Superdome to bring it to Canton to use it 1 (one) time in the HOF game.
    Seems excruciatingly stupid to me, but when the guy (Tom Benson) donates $30 million...he got what he asked for.
    @the-gipper said:
    Yeah like the NFL is some two bit rum dumb fly by night operation.
    "Sorry tonight's nationally televised game is cancelled due to <hmmmm> wet or congealing paint or somethin' on the playing field". 😕
    Oh Christ I'd love to try something lame like that in the places I worked, you would be checking the want ads that next day. 😆
    Don't know much football? Lewis and Urlacher were maybe 2 of the 6-8 best MLBs to ever play. Antoine Winfield was a great cover corner (better than Charles Woodson). And others
  • Here are the Hall of Fame Presenters for Next Week's Induction Ceremony:
    Morten Andersen....his son Sebastian
    Terrell Davis...his agent/friend Neil Schwartz
    Kenny Easley...his high school coach Tommy Rhodes
    Jerry Jones...His wife Gene
    Jason Taylor...his coach with the Dolphins: Jimmy Johnson
    LaDanian Tomlinson...his Charger teammate Lorenzo Neal
    Kurt Warner....his wife Brenda
    But....here is a fresh Irony: Jimmy Johnson is presenting Jason Taylor.....but Jerry Jones is being inducted into the HOF.
    I am sorry, but that is a fucking travesty in my opinion.
    Isn't it fair to say that the success the Cowboy's have had on the field in the last 25 years was due to Jimmy Johnson and NOT fucking Jerry Jones? The Cowboys have won maybe a couple of playoff games total in those 20+ years ....since Barry Switzer won the SB with the players that Jimmy Johnson put together.
    Why is Jerry fucking Jones getting elected anyway?
    I guess some say he has been great for the game.....IF counting money is the only thing that matters in the game. Maybe it does to a lot of the HOF voters.
    While this asshole has apparently been instrumental in bringing a lot of money into the league...that is ALL the motherfucker has done. Mediocre teams. Brought in a lot of sketchy characters to his team. He promoted the franchise movements that have gone on...such as the Rams. He said a big fuck you to loyal fans, just so that....in his words "the good fans of Los Angeles could have a team". Where is hell are you going to find these "good fans of LA". The two teams that are now in that city don't care about those teams. Per MarkO, LA is a Raider town....a team from a different city...be it Oakland or Las Vegas. Jerry Jones is just a celebrity ass sniffer...and he wanted a team in LA just so it can be said that the NFL is in town with a lot of celebrities. (yea, like OJ and the Cardassians). Or, maybe just because he wanted a Super Bowl to be played in LA because he thought there was more money in it. That is all he is about....more money.
    Jimmy Johnson built the reputation of the team he owns...and it is Jimmy Johnson who should more properly be getting in, not Jerrah. Yet Johnson has to be a presenter instead of an inductee. Ridiculous.
    ^^^^ This. You're preaching to to choir Gip. I've always said, as in baseball- there should be a section for players and coaches- and then one for "contributors". As you point out- about all Jones has done is contribute a lot of $$$ to the other owners pockets. Don't get me started on how he encouraged Carpetbagger Kroenke to screw over St. Louis and head to supposedly greener pastures in LA. Thankfully, I have to believe Art Modell's ship has sailed on getting in, kudos to Tony Grossi for standing up to the voters and explaining the reason he should never be inducted.
    To my mind there's probably only a couple owners who really belong- George Halas, Curly Lambeau. They get the nod because they coached too. Grudgingly have to accept Rolling Stone Al Davis for the same reason, though it could be said the Crypt Keeper was an even bigger a-hole than Jones. .
    Really- anyone got a valid reason why these guys are in? Wellington Mara, Art & Dan Rooney, Pete Rozelle?
    PS- after contributing Million$$$ to the HOF site- just watch for the push to get Tom Benson in. 😕
    OK Mr Trivia Guru- technically- Lambeau was never the "owner" of the Packers- just the "founder\creator", which back then made him the owner- short of a $500 buck loan. You got any proof the team was always "owned" by the city of Green Bay? Seems like that would belong to the Indian Packing Company that fronted him the money, not the city.
    Of course I knew Rozelle was never an owner- my point being- just because you're the NFL commish- that entitles you to a bust in Canton? There was a push to get Tagli-a-boo-boo in for the same reason. I'll puke if they try and nominate No-Good-ell.
  • Clearly you needed more separation between "owner" and "Rozelle" than one paragraph...
    Rozelle was the architect of the NFL "boom"... TV deals... the merger. He did more to put eyes on the game and $$$ in the owners pockets than any other individual. That's why he's in the HoF.
    ..
    Pretty lousy criteria for getting in then. Same reason for Jerry. Make big $$$ for NFL, get into the HOF. That was the reason for trying to get Modell in too. He negotiated those big TV contracts. The merger would have happened with or without Rozelle just MHO.
    In 30 or so years it won't matter. I'm betting soccer will take over as the #1 sport in the US, we'll just catch up with the rest of the world. Those millions of kids playing now say so. That $262 million for Neymar is a pretty good indication of the money in the sport.
  • @boo-fagley said:
    Like Jerry Jones? Can someone explain why he is great?
    Jason Taylor was solid, but great? No Super Bowls and kinda a choker in big games.
    Saturday - 6 pro bowls, 1 Super Championship, undrafted. Can you write the story of the Manning era without Saturday? No, he was the Colts most notable O lineman.
    Jerrah... as h pointed out, it's $$$ in owners pockets... same as Rozelle. Rightly or wrongly, Jerrah is seen as a major reason that franchise values have skyrocketed.
    There is an 8-year stretch in the middle of Taylor's career where his impact was HoF worthy and on par with the best period of another Taylor's HoF career... but overall, no, I don't think of the two Taylors the same way... and has nothing to do with playoff success... or an OLB "choking". Not even sure how you determine that.
    Saturday? You are giving him a lot of credit for Peyton's success... seemingly in contradiction to your over-weighting of the QB position.
    I liked the player and enjoy his comments on ESPN, but IMO he's borderline HoF worthy. While OGs came and went with regularity during Jeff's time, the OTs were relatively constant and pretty damn good. Tarik Glenn was the LT for more than half Jeff's early career with Ryan Diem holding down the right side. Point being that Jeff was not alone. Both OTs were there for the team's lone SB win in the Manning era.
    Class of '18's Steve Hutchinson... now there's a HoF no-brainer...
