Why are we looking for an offensive coordinator?

I tend to agree more with Ghoolie (God, did I say that?😆). The OC hire will be just as meaningful as the GM hire. The real fight to watch this season will be over whether they serve Starbucks or Kona Coast because neither will be doing any other real job.

EDIT: Back to draft fantasies because Browns fantasies are discouraging (other than the cheerleader thread).

Do we know whether or not the new OC will be calling plays, or is that a stupid question? Hence, OC not doing real work?

That is my guess based on Hue's apparent ego problem and a need to control. If he had realized how poorly he was doing that was leading to 0-16 he would have addressed it during the season. The excuse of not wanting someone else to take the blame besides himself just does not hold water for me. If you're drowning you need to find lifelines or you just go down. That is what is happening to this stubborn fool. Adding an OC will not cure the problem that he is too blind to see, but is obvious to even the least educated fan. He is a poor playcaller in the redzone and is a horrible game & clock manager. And take away that red flag. All it does is lose timeouts that he tends to squander anyway.

    Therein lies the question.

My guess, if he can get away with getting a puppet OC where he can still call the plays.....he'll go that route.

The theory now is that management is going to hire an OC with a ton of head coaching experience, and then basically promote that guy as our new coach when/if Hue struggles. The last few names we've heard being kicked around all have a crap-ton of head coaching and OC'ing experience, and we'd probably be happy to have any of them.

Now, I'm not a conspiracy guy like many around here, and I'm not so sure Hue is going anywhere. People need to realize that he made a bunch of mistakes, but he hasn't exactly been an embarrassment either. We started a 21 year old qb, we had some bad injuries, and let's not pretend Hue had the benefit of a great defense. The players like the guy, he's going to another draft full of high picks, and we might even have a legit all star at WR. I'm not trying to make excuses for Hue, and I know 0-16 is beyond reprehensible, but we're going to look different in 2018. Laugh at me all you want, and I won't blame you for being pissed off, but right now I'm feeling like we've got something coming up that will shock people. Starting with a QB, and I don't think we'll stop there.

A number of HCs have OCs, but retain playcalling... O'Brien in HOU, Reid in KC and McCarthy in GB spring to mind.

There are examples of DCs who don't call the D as well.

Point being there is "real work" for Coordinators to do besides call plays on gameday... if the HC empowers them to do that work. Assembling game plans, running practices and the Offense's "room" are among them.

But...WE need an OC that calls plays......and assembles a game plan...and runs practices...and etc. etc.   We need Hue to just be a coffee fetcher.

    Fair to say?

Whatever he does keep him away from redzone calls, TOs/clock management and the little red flag.😁

    Not really fair... just fashionable.

Sadly, even if he DOESN'T call the plays he'll still be in charge of TO's, clock mismanagement and the red flag.

    We're fi'n doomed to 3 or 4 losses on these alone. 🥷

  • How about a Pittsburgh castoff? Well he might be good.

CLEVELAND, Ohio --  The man who helped Ben Roethlisberger dominate the Browns over the past six seasons will now try to turn the tables on the Steelers.

Former Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley, who didn't have his contract renewed by the Steelers last week, has been hired by the Browns as the first offensive coordinator under Hue Jackson, a league source told cleveland.com.

Haley, 50, is expected to call plays under Jackson because of his vast experience in that role. He'll also have an opportunity to coach a new rookie quarterback such as Sam Darnold or Josh Rosen, who are candidates for the Browns at No. 1 overall.

Word out of Pittsburgh is that Haley clashed with Roethlisberger, but Big Ben didn't admit to that during a radio interview on Jan. 17th. Instead, he described a positive interaction he had with Haley after the Steelers lost 45-42 to the Jaguars in the divisional playoffs. In that game, Roethlisberger threw for a franchise playoff record 469 yards and five touchdowns.

"We talked and laughed about the season and how proud we were of how we improved as an offense," Roethlisberger said on 97.3 The Fan in Pittsburgh. "To be able to come out as the top three or five offense...just how proud we both were of everything that was accomplished with this offense."
