POLL: When will Baker start?

The Browns Board
153 43 5.2k
  • Yes, that was the case with RG3. That was the case with Kizer. Like you, none of the Browns coaches or management "saw" that happening. All due respect bro, life seldom happens as we " see" it. This is indeed one of the main reasons the Browns continue to suck. There is absolutely no contingency planning. Each and every year we put things into a nice, neat, little analytical package, and create a storybook fairytale for how things are going to just fall into a nice, orderly progression.

Then, life happens and I get to read schidt like......."IF ONLY THIS DIDN"T HAPPEN WE WOULD HAVE......"

I just must live in a different world than most of you. Seriously, My water system designs are never the low bid. I have duplicate pumps, parts, instrumentation, access for support/temporary equipment, and all the schidt that "nobody sees happening". But life DOES happen, man, it always does.

You need to consider these things.

TieRod has never taken a single snap in Cleveland. He has never played with our players or staff. Mayfield is his equal in this. Now, id Tie Rod had already been at the helm for a few years and was established with the offense and coaches? yes, THEN you have a point. But the only thing he brings to the Browns is a few years of experience. Sorry man, but we have seen first hand how a QB with some years of experience doesn't necessarily amount to a hill of dog schidt.

You can say all you want that you are happy with the girl you intend to ask to the prom, and then Jennifer Lopez walks in wearing a miniskirt and tells you she needs a prom date. BOOM.......what you "saw happening" is no longer reality. I don't care who Mayfield practices with if he shines like Lopez in a mini, it creates mayhem in the camp.

Furthermore, if ie Rod gets hurt, which is a great possibility for a run-first, Hue Jackson QB, OR.............. if the Browns are sitting at  0 - 6, remembering that Tie Rod has no previous track record with the Browns,  the QB controversy, and disorganization is alive and well in Cleveland. You watch, this is going to be a mess.

  • first off, this idea that mayfield definately sits the whole first year out of some kind of pre-camp plan is lunacy.

If baker doesn't beat out tyrod for the starting spot, that means one of two things:

    1) in the middle of his career tyrod just made some unprecedented leap that nobody expected

    2) Mayfield isn't showing much

Look, mayfield is a 23 year old guy who spent 5 years in college and has a bazillion games of major college experience.  He's not some raw project.  Im not saying he will/should start game 1, but in all likelihood he will take over the starting role this year.  And if he doesnt thats a bad sign.

I also dont think we will have to wait that long to see how mayfields game translates to the nfl.

I think counting on mayfield to be 'the guy' for the next decade is far from a sure thing/even good bet.  But we'll see....and I think we will see pretty soon.

  • Should Mayfield start before he's ready no matter how good or bad Taylor or Stanton do? (short answer no)

Do it right. Play some yes, start not for at least 6-8 games if that.

  • I'll be shocked (as of today) if Mayfield hasn't started by the bye week, which is after the 10th game.

I don't see it that anything was said about Bakers sitting the whole season.  Where did you read that?

My understanding is there is no camp competition.  TT is going to start from the get go, Stanton is the back-up.

If things are going well, Baker might not get in, if not, I'd say late Oct, early Nov. might be about right.  Baker might not even be active the first 3-4 weeks.

  • i don't think browns fans will have long to wait before seeing mayfield with tyrod's injury history.

  • Its Tyrods to lose. Unless people are at all the training camps and see a Mayfield above and beyond the best qb of the group. Then he will sit for a while. If TT gets injured Stanton has to start, Baker will get the very next start. Seems like every year the back up breaks something as soon as they are put in.  Hues coaching career is on the line with this year, he has been given some really good weapons and a coordinator. He personslly doesnt want to rush Baker unless he sees Brees/Wislon right away in camp.

I think Tyrod is better than some of your are giving him credit for

  • Would Taylor be satisfied to stay in Cleveland as our backup QB? Or, will he split once Mayfield takes the job? If he does leave who is the backup then? Do we specifically go and draft a backup QB next year? It'll definitely be different to have a QB that we have for more than a year or two, one that we can build around and move forward- good or bad- with.

or how any teams do things...

#1 overall(or hell just high round 1 in general) qbs dont sit the whole year anymore....they sit a few games, if that

  • This is the same line of thought I initiated the Mayfield Mayehm thread. Redundant.

As I replied to Orion, you can create your little scenarios about how we should proceed... blah, blah. blah.. let tie rod do this....then let Mayfield do this......

Sorry, but you just cannot predict when Baker will start. There are a ton of variables involved and nobody here knows when the right time will be. Not even the coaches nor Dorsey know that. All this bullschidt about starting him when he is ready is absolute Browns, self-deprecating, annual stupidity.

If Mayfield shows up Tie Rod in camp and preseason, that means he is better. Period. It doesn't matter what his experience level is........... if he beats Tie Rod then CLEARLY, Tie Rod's "experience" doesn't amount to a hill of schidt. How much NFL experience did Sipe have when he rescued the Browns? How much " mentoring" did Brady have? Is the ideal situation to let Tie Rod help build the team, maybe win 7 or 8 games and then hand it off to Mayfield? Yeah.....for you pussies.

It doesn't matter if you think Mayfield is ready or not. If the Browns are 0 - 7, Haslam will face testicular amputation. NOBODY is going to put up for another year like that. We go 0 - a bunch, Mayfiled is going to be baptized by fire. That's just how it works. Nobody in their right mind sits their better QB. YOu can slobber all you want about the pro set, and blah blah blah,  but football is the game even a mental moron (Kosar) can master. It is 99% athleticism and natural instinct. If Mayfield is the schidt................. nobody in their right mind is going to play Tie Rod Tarlenton.

  • I don't know if some of you guys are Millennials and Gen-Xs or what, but honestly, and I mean this respectfully, a lot of this tentative Baker stuff is really lacking testosterone and courage.

Baptism by fire doesn't ruin Quarterbacks. In only fast forwards the timeline for exposing schidt QBs. I disagree with Hoorta that Browns fans are impatient. 1 - 32 and we still show up? Schidt since 1999...................and we are impatient? WTF?

Look, if you are one of these people who believes in sitting a QB for a year to let him learn and develop, then honestly, you have to be critical of Dorsey. If bringing up a QB methodically was Dorsey's plan, then he should not have drafted a QB this year. He should have let Tie Rod establish himself with the team. He should have let all these new cats gel together, and THEN brought in a young QB in 2019, once the team was stabilized.

What we have to hope for is that the Browns come out an knock out a few wins, 2-6 at the split is not going to do it. 3 - 5 guarantees that the fans will accept the new regime's results as FINALLY being on the right track. I don't know what the 0 - ? number is, but God Forbid the Browns proceed 0-1  0-2  up to 0- something disgusting, Mayfield is going to start. There is just no way around it.

At that point, he either rises up as a savior, or fails amid a new argument of whether or not the Browns threw him to the dogs, or if he just wasn't big enough for the NFL.

Either way, the path to whether Baker is allowed to sit and be groomed will be directly proportional to whether or not Tie Rod can engineer some wins and create a team we care to watch.

I agree with that sentiment. I don't think the guy sucks by any stretch of the imagination. I do wonder what it was about him that made Buffalo so eager to dump him. Maybe whatever quarterbacking problems we had last year will at least seem a little bit better this year with him.

On the other hand sometimes I wonder what a kid can learn sitting on the bench as opposed to getting tossed into the fire. Not sure whether that hurt Kizer or if he was just not up to it.

    Yep.

  • Kizer was thrown into the fire with literally no help for over half of a season.

  • My guess is week 11 after the bye unless Tyrod is killing it.

    Yepp. That was consistent.

It's offseason, the days after Draft gifts. You cannot ask a 1-35 team fans not to wonder when will they see their new toys in action.

I just think the front office wants to try things different, not rush a qb like they have. I love your points on Baker and Taylor both being zero and zero with the playera and coaches we have. The only difference right now is the time Taylor has put in. Baker is our future and if he shows he is ready then maybe the last 4 or 5 games. If we are gonna be shitty, its not gonna be because of Tyrod.
