  • Maybe so, but it's important to try to discern the true cause.

If it is entitlement, then the path in house using benching and other humbling could ultimately work.

If it is pressure as a trigger, then outside help in the form of more rehab followed by continued support is the path.

I don't think that has much to do with it. I think the kid was handed a job he's been striving for for almost 2 years and was celebrating that promotion with his dumb ass friends in a club. He probably didn't think he was doing anything particularly wrong and paniced when somebody showed the video to the coach and realize the coach was taking it really seriously, so he made a bad decision to try and bullshit his way out of it.

I have told bullshit lies that I regretted the minute they came out of my mouth.

  • WSS you are right one about Johnny. He's just a kid and he's always been just a kid. People need to realize that if they want to find fault in somebody all they have to do is look hard and long enough and they will find it in ANY person. Manziel will be called on, probably after halftime in the Bengals game. The Bengals are in first place and the only third string QB in the league with a chance in hell to beat them is John Manziel.

It will be a quick and painful fall from starting QB for Austin Davis. Hate all you want. This is Manziel's team, like it or shove it.

  • Well Po it's hard to second-guess the coach.

None of us are privy to what goes on in the locker room so...

And we don't know which of the players are behind Johnny, which don't like him and which are scared to speak out against the coach who has the fire power to boot them at the end of the season.

Because I have to admit the head coach has to be the authority and if he loses that...

I wish I had more knowledge of what that ultimatum might have been but we don't. Still no matter what it was mishandled in my opinion to the detriment of the team.

I won't take the Bengals lightly until they have clinched the division but stranger things have happened.

If the team rallies and pounds the shit out of the Bengals Pet comes out smelling like a rose. If the Queen City kitties rip us to shreds he looks like an even bigger dick head.

Actually I think Pets best hope was letting Johnny finish out the season. The team does well and everybody forgets about the feud between coach and quarterback if the team fails he can always blame Manziel.

  • It's not dissimilar to the dust up between Ezekiel Elliott and the coaches. Urban Meyer might have been pissed off and run the same damn game plan as he did against Michigan State. But he blinked and took another route now he and the running back are best pals and all forgotten.

The difference is that Meyer is a HC NOT resistant to change or looking in a mirror & making adjustments. THOSE are big reasons he is the winner that he is.

    Mike

  • I wish we knew the whole story with JM and Bowe....whose doghouse are they in? Pets? farmers ? Haslems? Just doesnt make any sense.

  • Justin Gilbert as well. There is no reason that we shouldn't let this guy sink or swim, he's never going to get it on the bench.

The Players aren't utilized properly or sometimes not even playing the right positions. If I was the coach, we'd have won at least 8 games with this same exact team. Pettine has cost us dearly with bad decisions all season long. Questionable calls on timeout usage, play calling, scheme and roster depth chart.

So, the idea was to go with McCown because he gave us the best chance to win NOW... well, we're are what we are. 2-9.

We've wasted ANOTHER YEAR and on the job training at the QB position. Pettine obviously can't handle big egos in the locker room. That is a clear sign that this job is TOO BIG for him.

He's an average level DC, nothing more. He should not have the POWER to make roster decisions or determine who plays or sits. He doesn't or simple can't look at the bigger picture or think outside the box. Any successful coach is going to have to be able to work with all the different types of personalities, the way they come, talent isn't going to always fit inside the tiny perfect box you think it should come in. A coach has extract all the raw ability and production they can with what they have to work with. You can't simply put it on the shelf until it turns into something you can work with.

Everyone knew what we were getting when we picked Johnny, how can you pick him and then act like you didn't know what type of character he is. The point is people are only going to hate him if he doesn't win. If all he does is win, fuck the critics. But, it is unfair to take him in the first round, and then not play him until he changes his ways. Maybe the reason he is so different on the field and exciting is because he is a different type of guy OFF THE FIELD.

I don't think anybody, and I mean ANYBODY, thought that Manziel would come in, learn from the bench for a couple years and then go out and act like Peyton Manning ON THE FIELD and Colt McCoy OFF THE FIELD.

It's UNFAIR to Manziel to select him and then not play him until he changes into something he's simply not.

It's UNFAIR to the NFL and Other Teams that could have picked him and given him a chance.

It's UNFAIR to the Fans that were shown a product and then given something else entirely.

It's UNFAIR to the Browns to play other QBs over the QB that gives you the best chance to win.

You have to be able to handle big egos and personalities. Do you think Pettine would EVER played Ocho Cinco his entire career had he been his coach. Coaches are not Fathers. The coach players to be the best athlete they can. These are grown men with NFL salaries, with their own fathers, some are even fathers themselves. Pettine ain't nobody daddy and he loses all credibility trying to act like one.

All plausible until the underlined bit, Steve.

Other thing it is not... similar... at all.

One was the emotional venting of a key producer moments after a tough loss.

The other was a calculated attempt to deceive his "boss" by covering up a lie with the enlisted help of others.

Aside: Ever wonder how the Browns came so quickly to know about JM's effort to enlist others in support of his lie?

  • I guess I do wonder about that tour.

I figure as soon as a mafia underboss gets arrested a lot of the rats start running for cover. 😉

But I think the other scenario was more similar than you'd like to admit. Mouthing off against your coaches in public and among your team mates is also insubordination. I certainly understand the kids frustration but...

Some people seem to think that if a player misbehaves by disobeying a suggestion or yapping to the press that if it goes unpunished other players might think they can get away with more shit.

  • A thought I do not remember seeing discussed anywhere.

Did the pressure of being named starter drive JM to party over the Bye week? Question rose out of reflecting upon what his father, IIRC, said long ago about JM drinking to deal with pressure.

Not offering the thought as an excuse, just exploring as a potential reason why he would break his word.

Or is it a sign of falling off the wagon, dating back to the roadside deal with girlly friend??....zero incidents involving alcohol for 6 months, then suddenly, 2 things happen in just a few weeks.....coinkidink?.....I think not.....

Something else not being discussed is his ex high school coach, who was hired by Johnny to live with & mentor him following rehab.......well, when he spoke publicly after the roadside incident, he said "its big big trouble if Johnny even had a single drink"...

Now...this is from a trusted source who is super close to Johnny and the situation......so, for those who insist that its "only a drink with friends" and we dont know the truth...you are in denial.....

Look....if it was just a young guy drinking, no one would care.....certainly not the Browns....and none of this would be happening...

But when you have a guy who says I have a problem, his boss says he has a problem, his Dad says he has a problem, his college coach says he has a problem, his HS coach says he has a problem and he starts lying to cover it.....then MAYBE he has a problem.....eh?

  • Report: Manziel expected to regain starting job before end of season

    Dec 6 2015, 10:26 AMDan Wilkins

Johnny Manziel will reportedly have another opportunity to showcase his talents before the 2015 season reaches its conclusion.

The Cleveland Browns quarterback, who was recently demoted in a disciplinary move just days after being named the full-time starter, is expected to regain the lead job at some point down the stretch, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

Rapoport added that head coach Mike Pettine's decision to start Austin Davis isn't something everyone in the organization is on board with, and the change could come as soon as next week.

As yet another lost season winds down, the Browns will certainly begin to look to the future. In doing so, the most sensible solution would indeed be to evaluate Manziel and determine whether he'll be brought back for a third season.

The former Texas A&M star had rebounded from a disastrous rookie season, making some positive strides both on and off the field, prior to his latest setback.

Davis will start in place of an injured Josh McCown on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals, and Rapoport's report suggests that Manziel will earn consideration for that role relatively soon after.

Did anybody really think he wouldnt play again this year?.....

The Browns certainly never said that.....😉

  • I saw and heard that report. You forgot to mention they also said dependant on how Davis plays today..... Context counts

If Davis plays well I think he continues to start as long as that remains the case. Pet would gladly let the circus fold if he had an alternative.

  • Or it could be like a used car lot when they get a clunker. Wash, wax, new rubber and get more than it's worth. I do figure we see the kid play again and things will be very skewed to make him look better than he is. I wish he was Tark but I've only seen Weeds on crack

  • Pulling for AD today since great play by him is a prereq to victory, but I have no doubt he'll open the door for JM to get starts before year's end. Really is nothing in his past or our make-up to suggest otherwise.

I am assuming that JM will keep his shit together to warrant consideration. If he does, I have no doubt that Pet will not hold him out.
