  • The hardest part of rehab is when you are out of the controlled environment. He needs a strong support base and to stay away from any friends that party. He needs to concentrate 100 percent on working out, learning the playbook and keeping clean.

  • Good for him. Now let's move and play some ball son.

    Eggsactly!

Another trigger of concern is how has he always celebrated success? Like many college-aged kids, he partied heavy on the weekends/after games. In Cleveland, he celebrated fame after all the hard work he put into the draft process that landed him on an NFL team as a 1st round QB. I guess you could say it was a work hard - play hard early on. Pettine actually praised Manziel's early work ethic when he had to respond to why he okayed Johnny's trip to Vegas. Unfortunately, the path of his chemical dependency/illness in Cleveland progressed past the "work hard" part to skipping record on "play hard." Even when Hoyer was playing his way out of the starting lineup - Johnny's priority seemed to be watching the Cavs at night in lieu of mastering the playbook or going Russell Wilson on the film study of upcoming opponents. As a result, an undrafted Conner Shaw ended up looking like the guy with the more promising future.

This story isn't as funny as some people or national media make it out to be. We drafted the Johnny Football that could lead his team over Nick Saban's #1 team in the country on their own turf; and ended up with the next Johnny Blutarsky. If anyone knows how the Blutarsky story ended - a very talented entertainer became impossible to work with before his chemical dependency ultimately killed him.

This draft doesn't look like it has a decent supply of eventual football messiahs at QB so we're currently in the first chapter of Manziel in the NFL. The first paragraph of the story took place on a day our offense couldn't cross the 50 the entire time we had a 3-0 halftime lead. When Manziel entered the game, regardless of alibis and excuses - we were in the end zone within 4-5 plays. Any question regarding arm strength DIED when he threaded 2 defenders with a completion to Austin. The times he looked like he lacked arm strength thereafter were when he was throwing off balance. Brett Favre threw quite a few INTs throwing off balance over the years - especially in his first year starting in season #2 (also his first year sober right?). Not saying they're the same guy - just saying they had the same demons. Some people that thought vicodine was Favre's first bout with chemical dependency don't know about how he almost died at So Miss when nobody in his car was sober enough to drive. A few years later, Favre was frequenting happy hours in Atlanta, not learning the playbook and sleeping at team meetings and in the film room. Rumor had it, he didn't ask what a nickle coverage was until he was Ty Detmer's teammate in Green Bay. Maybe the alcoholism as well as the art of improvise are the biggest reasons why Favre always said he felt like the QB that resembled him the most was Manziel. Who knows? None of that changes this drafts seemingly limited supply of QBs for however many of 32 teams desperately need one.

Sometimes people get so caught up in what they predicted/promised - they end up rooting for the "told you so" more than the guy Cleveland drafted. Colt McCoy is a classic example. He was a 3rd round draft pick that played like a 3rd round draft pick with THIS on the perimeter: Brian Robiske, Mo Mass, Chansi Stuckey-at-the-line-of-scrimmage, etc. Who's kidding who with that opportunity? Even more, many people exercising their "told you so" ended up acting like they were the most disappointed/surprised he wasn't performing like a 1st round QB. That said, the 2 guys (Delhomme & Wallace) eating far more cap space had us playing down to levels of crappy opponents. Meanwhile, McCoy had us playing up to the levels of NE, New Orleans and the AFC Championship Game-bound Jets. We beat the first 2 teams while Stuckey fumbled the ball away at the Jets 30 yard line in OT.

Take a guess at what the QB alternatives were to McCoy? Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford (which would have required a Daniel Synder type of trade), and Jimmy Freakin Clausen. As of 2014, what QB outperformed RG3? Colt McCoy. Unfortunately for Washington, the entire fan base, coaching staff and teammates are being held hostage to 1 more episode of Daniel Snyder wants to be right this time. That's a franchise that participated in quite a few Superbowls under much better ownership previously.

  • HA!

it might seem to some people that people are BITCHING about manziel. give him a break. now you all can go along now and sing the praises of this kid who did nothing but waste a year of his life and 16 sundays of mine.

oh btw, i guess it's called bitching when it's about something that you don't want to bitch about and it's called a disagreement when you go full force frak on those who hold other opinions than you do, hmm....let's say on the political board.

    talk about bitches.

  • John Blutarsky eventually became a US senator.

    WSS

  • and the real actor died from banging heroin and coke..........

Well....Manziel blew his first year, admitted he was being a jackass, went to rehab.

You know who has had over six years of being far worse than a jackass, has no honor about himself to admit it, six years of chances to go to rehab and man up, but won't admit he needs to...

I would bitch about a second year of manziel being the same, but he went to man up after one yr. The political jackass will never man up and go to rehab. And it's looking exactly like it's going to keep going on for all eight years of

you know who being an outrageous self destructive qb of our country without one "I'm sorry I suck".

I reckon the point some of us have made has hit home like a boulder off a tall cliff landing. Big ouchie.

  • Hopefully we will only talk about him when he plays

wow, usually it takes 3 or 4 of my posts to make someone stark raving mad.

no wonder it's frowned upon to talk politics or religion in a bar.

  • I'm not mad at all. Stark ravin goofball ....well, that goes without sayin....

still 12 days to the draft. Like this past winter, I've never waited so freakin long

for spring and the draft, and both are really going to be great. 😎

  • Don't really care much about Manziel. If he shows up to play I hope he's better than last year

  • Okay - it sounds like part of our fan base wants Manziel to hear this:

It was very nice of our Steeler fan Vag to hold up that sign of affection for the American Idol kid singing along with One Republic at 1:46 into the video.

  • He will still have the best arm of all the options we'll have next year.

I hope he does work out - but I will believe he can be a success at only one point: After he's selected by the coaching staff to be the starter, and after he's won a few games. Until then, he's still proving himself.

I could care less, though: Last year's draft is at this point a sunk cost. Either he works out or he doesn't, I'm so over it. If he doesn't work out, McCown and Shaw won't be embarrassing.

  • I honestly think that him making an ass out of himself during his rookie year is the best thing that could have happened for his career. A lot of times people need to fail at something before they become truly great at it. It still remains to be seen if he has the skill set for the NFL. Hopefully he pans out, but I think he can be adequate enough to take the job from McCown.

    Yup.

I hate to say it, but I don't think he'll even make the start of the season before he screws up somehow. Not a believer that he's changed.

He's at least made a sincere effort. Not everyone succeeds on the first try.

    @kvoethe said:

Rofl, you people act like he wrote that or meant any of it. It's a Publicist hired by his agent to try to salvage a few bucks. He will be selling cars with Josh Gordon by week 8.

Maybe, maybe not. I sure hope not- because if he is- we just blew another first round pick.

  • Just imagine how awesome it will be if he is good. I miss cashin' out to all my rival friends (even if Johnny stops doing it himself it will still be a fan thing).

2 Key unanswered Questions-- 1. Lost trust in some players when he was announced Starter late in season and was it due to his performance or 2. I am young and not going to change my lifestyle for no one ???

    1. was named starter because of Brian Hoyers poor performance.

2 that's a paraphrase and his grammar is better than yours.

3 a lot of you bitches will hate him no matter what so who cares?

My reaction? Fair enough kid, let's play football.

Pretty much. He either succeeds or he doesn't. It's better for the Browns if he succeeds (obviously) so I'm rooting for him. I can't say that I'm convinced that he has what it takes, but I would sure love to be proven wrong!

  • I like Johnny as he showed me a lot of determination & mental toughness in the college game. Obviously, he failed to do what he needed to do last year, but he DID enter rehab. If he carries that commitment forward, I think he has all the tools to succeed.

Bottom line is, as Mark has stated, Johnny IS a Brown & deserves our support. What's good for him is good for the Browns.

REAL Brown's Fans will support him as a part of this TEAM. Many who won't support him think he will fail & just want to be proven right. That's not being a true Fan IMHO.

The one good thing I see here is that JFF took it upon himself to get fixed before anything truly serious happened. We see players getting busted for DUI, drugs and other various felonies everyday.....and usually they do nothing but deny....and its very rare to see them seek help(think of JG for instance) for themselves.......

But JFF didnt get busted for anything and never got in "real" trouble as a Brown....yet, while still in his first year, he recognized he needed to do better and make changes to his lifestyle.....then he took a HUGE step to correct these things....

To me....that says he IS getting his head straight and I fully expect him to be a hard working committed player come training camp...

Now, whether he can play or not is a completely different discussion....but I have faith he'll at least have his head in the game....

The philosophy of OC DeFilippo is spot on in my opinion when he states that an NFL quarterback today has to be sold out to the game and have a 24/7 commitment. That is the kind of commitment that will be expected from JM. With the Browns coaches and JM having his head in the game he will have a decent shot now to prove he is capable.

    This.^^ THIS, goddammit.

Johnny has talked a good game since day one. Shut the fuck up. Stop talking.

    SHOW ME SOMETHING.

Fine. I accept your apology. Now, move your ass into the facility in Berea, make DeFlippo your bestie,

and SHOW ME you're willing to do what it takes to be a successful NFL quarterback.

Please don't refer to cal's insane ranting as "talking politics".

  • thing that bothers me most about manziel's departure from rehab, thinking he might have learned something else besides sobriety is that picture taken at the tx rangers game. sure go to the game, have a great time BUT to sit in the front row when you know all the cameras will be pointing at you? c'mon man! wasn't the media half his prob last year?

JF the celebrity all over again.

what was pettine's quote last year "we'll find out if the kid wants to be a celebrity or a football player."

    well.........

the browns should have mandated he stay across the street from the facility in berea where pettine lived. sure it's not your swank celebrity digs but if you really want to prove to the team you are in it, wouldn't YOU do something like that?
