I don't know whether to laugh or cry at that one Syd but I'll guarantee you're not alone.  All we can do if he does get close is hope it's the Hue that got the best football out of Dalton in their 12-4 season.  David Carr recently brought up on the NFL Channel that Cincy's offense and Dalton haven't been the same since Hue left.  True or not, that's the coping mechanism I need to keep when it comes to Hue.

At least he hired Haley and let him install his offense.  I think I'm pumped about that.  Although watching us throw 4 passes after we got 1st and goal at the 1 yard line felt a lot like seeing a deer cross in front of me on the highway at the last split second while traveling 65 mph.   These bunched up cross/rub routes with that little room to maneuver didn't need to be called twice in a row.  Those didn't work all game even with more room.  In previous games, we've been flagged on those for offensive interference as we should have been.  Hopefully that's all trial and error stuff he boycotts when the regular season opens.

  • ogbah and orchard are superfluous at this point imo. Our edge D immediately tightens up when Nassib comes in. He's still "meh" as a pass rusher but Avery looks like he should see some serious time at LDE this year so we know what we need and dont need in next years draft.

Since when has our edge D tightened up when Nassib came in?   That's a frat boy keg party commentary.  Look, I'll be the first to tell you I enjoy Nassib on Hard Knocks.  His college coach described him as not NFL material while Williams described Ogbah as excellent against the run as does PFF no matter how much Sigma Tappa Kegsies disagrees.

Yes, Ogbah hasn't looked the same since a foot injury put him on IR last year.  Then again, did Myles Garrett playing on a pogo stick look anything like the healthy version we're watching this pre-season?  Hell no!  If you didn't see massive improvement in Ogbah last year - it's because you didn't want to or you predicted he'd suck so he needs to....  Sometimes, you also have to factor in Hue will x-stunt one of his defensive ends which excuses the DE from outside contain on that assignment.   That's not him free lancing or getting pushed/sucked inside - that's him playing TEAM defense his coordinator is asking of him.  When that happens, he has to trust someone else takes on the outside contain leverage.  I don't need you to recite what your last football coach taught you as if no-one else on this board ever played football or attended countless football camps.  None of that is required anyway if you're a football junkie.

I'm glad we have guys that can step up but it sure seems like injuries keep phucking with the momentum of guys showing progress whether it's Ogbah last year or this brand new version of Lawrence Taylor we just power stealthed out of round 5.  Orchard's career never launched after closing his rookie year strong when he finally got action. The next 2 years he landed on IR to stunt his growth and development further.  His window of opportunity under a new regime is slamming closed as we speak. The main thing is we have some guys that can play; and more of them than you're willing to give credit to.

  • Orchard hasn’t done anything since he’s been here other than cash his check

I cringe every time he substitutes for Garrett because I know they will run right over him if they have a lick of sense. I think he has the right spirit of a Brown, but just not the talent to go with it.

like i previously described...he fights upfield and gets the stack. Often he can shed as well and obstruct the runner, but he almost always forces the runner inside. Thats what the edge is supposed to do. Ive been listening for 3 years now about how thats not ogbahs job, yet when nassib comes in its noq the LDE's job?

Ur a coach flugel, if u see one of ur edge defenders  jersey number while a run is breaking to the outside dont u chew him out fir getting turn blocked?

I was a coach in the late 80s early 90s.  I usually started the guys that performed the best at their positions exactly like Williams did when he started Ogbah over Nassib.

Nassib looks good on Hard Knocks when he's not facing Hubbard, which means our guy drafted 65th overall does well against backups.  I like his work ethic and get a kick out of him on the show. That comes in handy when we need fresh legs and O2.

Again, last year, PFF ranked Ogbah as elite against the run which Gregg Williams brought up in a presser last year.  I also shared this about Ogbah's 2017 season before he went on IR in another recent thread about DEs from a guy that coached defensive line at the college level - Brent Sobleski @brentsobleski "...Ogbah is having a season similar to Clowney's 2016 campaign. ... no one has made more tackles at or behind LOS against (run) this year."

Next to Joe Schobert, I thought he was our most improved guy in the front 7 last year.  Therefore, I don't agree with you that he sucks no matter how many times you try to sell me on it.   Just out of curiosity, why do you want me and everyone to think he's so terrible?  I think his foot injury has impacted his camp this year; but Gregg Williams has great expectations for him when/if healthy again.

ive been pointing out how badly he gets turn blocked for now the 3rd year. I keep seeing the same play everytime a run breaks over our left side and #90 is in there. He gets his pads turned sideways and thats that its over. Ive yet to hear an explanation from anyone for why that keeps happening, all i hear is charlie browns mom mumbling "whaawhaa pff whaawhaa".

and i dont want to hear about being hurt, bosa started his rookie year with a bad hammie and his tech was as good as it got in the nfl. Myles hopped out onto the field last year on one leg but he still got upfield into the lanes. He couldnt always shed, he would allow his arms to get folded, and i was here critiquing him for it. But he at least had his body as an obstruction to the off tackle run.

PFF are professional fanbase trolls, not sure why anyone hasnt caught that yet.

Seriously, what's the rationale for the love for Nassib at this point? OK, he's worth having as a backup.. at what point has he ever done anything better than below-average in a non-preseason game? What type of ahistorical scotch are you drinking to celebrate the arrival of Monday?

His actual performance to date as a 3rd-round pick is barely meeting expectations..

agreed. if u read what write about him, his only use is as edge protection. His pass rushing is below avg. Ive critiqued him and ogbahs edge rush for over 2 years now. Which is why i put averys name first in the thread title as he should, right now, be splitting reps with nassib at LDE and then we'll see in a couple games if he can just taje over that spot full time.

we need to see what we have in avery now because i still think we need to target a LDE in the draft next year

    Defenses need edge setters, too...

Put Nassib in for run situations... trot him off in passing situations.

If he gets trapped on-field,than we blitz... not that Williams needs a reason to blitz.

Seriously... it's not as if run-stopping sackmasters fall from trees.

top tier DT would finish off this defense...ogbah's not the slouch you seem to think he is.  cant have all pros at every position.

    The Pro Bowl does! 🙂

Seriously, yours is the point. As long as the rest are very good role players you can have a lot of success with a couple 1st team All-pros and a couple 2nd teams as long as your QB and a pass rushers are in the 1st team conversation. (Sounds a lot like the Pats doesn't it?)

Nassib can fill a run stuffing role. And if trapped on-field, then Kirk outside Carl can supply the pressure. It's not a bad situation. Especially if there's a decent push up the middle.

ive been asking that question for 3 years. Ogbah is a better pass rusher, thats it. And not by really a whole lot he's just stronger than nassib. Had nassib addressed his physical deficiencies coming out of college better, i thi k he'd be starting. Imo, At 6'7 he gives up leverage that he doesnt make up for with improved leg drive.
