You have asked this question many times. Pretty much every time unsympathetic tells you not to believe the people who say we have tons of money.  Those people are either intentionally spreading lies or are simply misinformed. It's hard to tell their intent.  The one thing that is true is that they are wrong

Then why do we have an entire  6,7,8 page  thread about the possibility of JJ Watt coming to the Browns?   Shut it down if that is the case.

There is a possibility of jj watt coming to the browns if we are going all in and believe jj watt is the thing that brings us a super bowl. It would severely screw us over financially and make it very hard to resign chubb and baker and teller and others like ward if interested. Just like there is a possibility of me winning the lottery if I dump my life savings into lottery tickets but it would be a bad financial decision and put me in a rough spot where I have to start over if i don't win it.

Side note I'm not equating the chance of the browns winning the super bowl to me winning the lottery and obviously the browns could do some things to free up the space to sign watt via restructures or trades or cuts.

It is likely that We don’t have to commit to JJ long term.

    That’s part of the appeal.

But it's not a long term commitment thing. We basically would have to use rollover cap for his entire 1 year contract which means we don't have that extra money to sign all our young guys who are up for extensions

  • Keep the following in mind when you look at Spotrac and see that their 2021 total is less than OverTheCap.

    1) Spotrac does not include Blake Hance or Michael Dunn.

    2) Spotrac has Chubb nearly 2M cheaper than what's listed on OTC.

    3) OTC has Richardson 500k cheaper than what's on Spotrac.

    4) OTC has UDFAs Dorbeck 5k cheaper and Green 120k cheaper.

    5) For those of you counting, OTC shows the following more expensive next year than Spotrac: Garrett 120, MJ stewart 1, Harrison Bryant 1. Spotrac has Elliot and Phillips $1 more expensive than OTC.

    Excel's Vlookup.. never not useful.

Saw that^^  yesterday too...also OTC is missing JoJo Natson for a 1M..

Doubt Keenum has any trade value? but his contract has 1 million dollar esculators the longer he stays..still a fair price for a back-up QB

it would help if OBJ & or Richardson would reconstruct? Still don't see Njoku going anywhere, using 3 TE sets.. Hubbard & Clayborn could save us 3M each..Keeping & paying 1 FB ? ok.. but paying for 2 seems thick?

CB Terrance Mitchell i think we can get done at 5M/yr.. Higgins & Ogun? i don't see Berry matching any deal but his set number.. and it may start with a 3 or 4?

many solid cap cuts will be coming.. A 2nd NFL draft 🥷 I saw a Rams writer, saying the league has team roster max limits.. The Rams may test the Minimum roster limits..

Natson is UFA at present and isn't on Browns roster for 2021.. he's not in Spotrac either.

  • OTC's rookie salary estimates based on their draft slot.

Browns expectation is 7.9M.  Remember that for each pick there's a 50% chance Browns salary would come in higher than listed.. that's the fun with using averages.

So if you plug in 8M as Browns figure for 2021.... that comes out of our one-year cap.. so our one-year cap space is down from 21 to only 13M

I don't see any mention on the linked page of the salary figures being "averages". Where did this come from?

At least we don't have any compensatory picks to add to our total beyond the 9 picks we own which add up to the $7.845mm total. 🙂

  • Speaking of weeds to dive into..

I was saying average to reflect the potential differences from the "slotted" value in rookie negotiations over signing bonus schedule and the potential for offsets.

An offset clause allows a team to reduce the guaranteed money owed to a player when he is released by the amount of his new deal with another team.

So our listed is 7.845; i've only been saying 8 because it's easier and allows a bit of wiggle room.

Browns Salary Cap Picture Becoming Clearer

Although the salary cap hasn't become official yet, the picture for NFL teams is becoming clearer as their adjusted salary cap figures have become official.
It provides additional clarity on where the Cleveland Browns will be operating from later this month.
Pete Smith - 9 hours ago

Despite the fact the NFL salary cap could lose as much as $30 million relative to what was expected due to the pandemic, the Cleveland Browns were still in a pretty good position to operate and Field Yates of ESPN provided the most up to date look at where teams are in terms of adjusted salary cap.

    h

The lowest the salary cap can be in 2021 is $180 million. Even in that framework, the Browns, because of their ability to continue rolling over cap space, would be operating with an adjusted salary cap of $209,409,691, the most in the NFL. If the cap is $185 million or goes as high as $188 million, that would only give them additional breathing room.

As it currently stands, the Browns have $189,626,600 in salary committed towards that $209,409,691, which would leave them with $19,783,091. Again, this is if the salary cap is at the absolute lowest possible. With the legal tampering period set to start the 15th, the official number will be out sooner than later.

The Browns have room to operate, but they are going to need to create money if they want to be aggressive in adding talent to this team, be it through free agency or trades. They have a number of ways they create cap space, including restructuring players or deferring money down the road.

Basically, the Browns are only as cash strapped as they want to be as they pursue a Super Bowl. In his press conference, Browns general manager Andrew Berry said the team would be aggressive, but that it may not be necessarily in the way fans might expect.

With so many teams needing to reduce their cap burden, the Browns could be in position to benefit. Perhaps rather than getting into bidding wars for top free agents, the Browns might opt to buy lower on players teams need to move to be in line with the lowered salary cap.

This article is actually a great example of why you simply cannot "trust" the dollar numbers in publications unless they're referring to 10,000-foot NFL benchmarks like last year's salary cap.

Seriously, how hard is it to log into either spotrac or OTC and look at the sum as listed on their page? Neither one of those two has everything [because apparently neither group wants to tick-and-tie to resolve/clarify conflicting info with each player's contract even though one presumes that's what they're asserting they do] but.. both of them are more precise than this guy getting paid by a major news outlet.

as of 12:47p on 3/6 == Spotrac total salary : 197,506,660 // OTC total salary : 196,623,447.  And none of the breakdown numbers on either site match this guy's 189,626,600.

189 has not been the 2021 salary total on either site since the season ended.  It's out-of-date enough to make me wonder what else in the magazine is months behind.

2021 NFL salary cap reportedly set at $182.5M in first decrease since 2011

    Cassandra Negley

The 2021 NFL salary cap will be $182.5 million per club, the league informed teams Wednesday, according to multiple reports. It is a decrease of 8 percent from last season, but the cap didn't fall as low as initially feared.

It is approximately $15.7 million less than the 2021 cap of $198.2 million because of the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and not having full stadiums last season. There was a 92 percent drop in overall attendance due to attendance limits. Some stadiums and teams did not allow fans into games based on local restrictions.

The cap is the lowest since 2010 when the NFL launched its first uncapped year since 1993. Cap limits had risen every year since 2011 with rising league revenues.

The NFL and NFL Players Association agreed last summer the cap would not be any lower than $175 million. They told teams last month to anticipate a cap of at least $180 million, per ESPN, with some reports it would be upward of $185 million.

The cap is determined based on negotiations and projected revenues, among other factors. Per ESPN, if there had not been negotiated projections the cap would have been at $160 million based on the 2020 projected revenues alone.

Under the new cap, the final franchise tag values range from approximately $10 million to $19 million.

Teams have until March 17 at 4 p.m. ET to be in compliance with the cap. That's when the 2021 NFL calendar begins. Many teams will have to make difficult moves to get under it. The cap finalization for franchise tags is less than 24 hours after the deadline passed and one week before free agency begins.

The cap is expected to increase next season when attendance moves back to normal as the country slowly pulls out of the pandemic. The NFL is also working to finalize new broadcast contracts that boost revenue.
