Go Sign Mo Hurst
-
This is my homer pitch for the off-season. Raiders just waived Mo Hurst. There were concerns regarding his health screening causing him to plummet. Assuming his heart is healthy, this could give us a great addition on the interior DL. Elite inside pass rusher at Michigan with a top level first step. More suited for pass rushing than run stopping, but that's today's game. Highly regarded by PFF out of college and still ranks well with them now.
Thoughts @tiamat63?

On an admittedly limited snap count, he graded out as the #19 Interior Defender in the NFL for 2020 (per PFF).

If he was so good in 2020...why is he now dumped, unless he is a cap casualty. And if that is the case, why was he considered so expendable by the Raiders to be that cap casualty over other players? You say there was some concern about his heart? Why would not the Browns have the same concerns.

Good players get cut all of the time because of cap reasons... That's why it's called being a cap casualty. According to the Raiders board this opened up a little over $4m in cap to get then to about $6m in space total, so it sounds like they're tight on cap. The board also seems fairly surprised Hurst was cut for what it's worth.
Something was found in his pre draft process regarding his heart and it took him from a first round grade to the 5th. As I just said in my original post, IF he is healthy he's worth a spot.

You are saying that the "heart issue" was something in his pre-draft medical evaluations. But he has been in the league now for 4 years. So, I assume that issue has been resolved?
And sure, players, even good players get cut all the time......so I asked myself: "self, why is THIS supposed good player the one the Raiders determined to cut?" And the answer I seemed to find is that the term "good player" may not apply to him. The term "not very productive" player...at least for the last two years, seems more apt. Here are his stats:

Could have even beat out any of our currents second string DTs.

This is where I start correcting you and we see how you respond:
- He's been in the league for 3 years, not 4
- He didn't play a full season last as he was placed on the COVID list
- DTs generally aren't producing major stats, even outside if the fact that just looking at sacks is a very poor and old school way to evaluate DL (hence the PFF grade).
-
Youth. Bring in youth please

He's 25. Not exactly that old. Out of the 5 DTs listed in the roster he'd be the 2nd youngest.

This would be his 4th year...which is what I meant.
- He didn't play a full season last as he was placed on the COVID list
So....he had Covid AND a possible heart issue? Sounds like a very high risk situation that the Browns can easily say "No Thank you" to.

No, I would not just look at sacks for a DT (I would not just look at sacks for a DE....Clowney proves you can't do that). He just seems a mediocre at best producer.

Besides, just yesterday the Browns signed another backup DT Sheldon Day. Here are his stats....proving he is a real backup:

My opinion? Rookie 2d or 3rd round draft pick, IF we even need one:
We have Sheldon Richardson, Malik Jackson, Andrew Billing, Jordan Elliott (or is it Elliot Jordan), and Day
But, it would also not be out of the realm of possibility that the Browns could go with a Christian Barmore in round one.

@tiamat63 never mind, found your original and most recent thoughts
Going to answer your post several ways.
- Would I Take Mo over Sheldon Day? Yes
- Would I sign him just to have him? No. Cost is a real question here, but he sure wouldn't be expensive.
- What is happening with Richardson? Restructure and Mo likely becomes a pipe dream. Release and a combination of Mo + a mid round target (my early name is Alim McNeil) and I feel you can really get some quality snaps and scheme flexibility with redundancy from those two. Then Malik Jackson becomes the elder statesman on the IDL with that playoff veteran saavy.
- Would MH be our best interior pass rusher not named Clowney or Myles in subpackates? Yes
The answer rooted in true realism is entirely dependent upon what transpires with Sheldon Richardson. Mo is a fine player who could be a breakout candidate IMHO. But health permitting, might not get that shake.
And going back to read my eval, I was effusive in my praise of Mo and what he does well. Even said his talent (save for his health) was worthy of a high(er) pick. Which likely would have happened if not for his heart.
....and you said I was wrong.
Edit: my IDL building philosophy values players like MH. In case that wasn't clear.
-
I'd be interested in kj Wright instead
-
they also waived key.

Looking at that thread, I don't think I said you were wrong. I think I said someone else was and that post no longer exists. It looks like I was more or less agreeing with you...

Browns just released Richardson.
So.......

they brought back freddie kitchens as a personal evaluater
