The Penguin

  • This is a spinoff series of The Batman movie starring Robert Pattinson, which if you saw it, maybe you liked it or maybe you didn’t. The Penguin, played my Colin Farrell (though you wouldn’t know it looking at the character) has a decently significant role in that movie. He plays a sort of upper level henchman in the film, and after some things went down in the film a power vacuum was created to set the stage for The Penguin.

This mini series on Max is basically the story of the Penguin’s rise to power in the underbelly of Gotham.

Farrell does a hell of a job leaning in to the role. It’s evident he gave it full throttle due diligence similar to actors before him who embraced the role of the Joker.

There’s some very fine acting in this series, not only on the part of Ferrell but also some of the supporting characters as well. I was particularly impressed by a fellow named Rhenzy Feliz, who plays Farrell’s main sidekick in the series.

That said, the series was a little slow moving in parts, so l wouldn’t say it was riveting, but it did a good job where it counts.

There were good cinema elements throughout the series too, like the use of music and a few great camera shots that created some great artsy moments.

I’m admittedly a pretty big fan of all things Batman, even the stuff that has little to do with Batman but is set in the world of Gotham. This series did a fine job stoking those embers for me. I’ll give it an A-.
