The Gorge

  • This most recent action flick du jour dropped on Apple+ about a month ago and stars Miles Teller, who l most recently know from Top Gun: Maverick (character Rooster) and Anna Taylor-Joy, who l remember as the drop dead gorgeous young chess prodigy in the Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit.

In this flick they play sharpshooters, and they’re among the best in their respective hemispheres. Teller plays an ex US military guy who had been doing contact work in recent years, and Taylor-Joy is sort of depicted as the same, except working for Russia.

Both of them sign up for a super secret mission where they essentially stand guard on different sides of a ginormous spooky gorge, about a mile apart from each other, and aside from a monthly check in there is zero contact with the outside world and they are forbidden from contacting each other. The mission is to keep whatever is in the gorge from coming out.

You get some backstory on how this place came to exist. It was created around the end of WWII so their respective watch towers have a real cold war feel to them, and by the time the flick is over you get the full scoop on what the big deal is with the gorge and why it’s such a big secret.

Among their respective rations is potato vodka, which is a contributing factor to them saying “to hell with this not contacting each other shit. We wanna flirt!”

And the whole thing basically devolves into a sort of sci-fi action love story. They both have high powered binoculars to peep on each other, and they always seem to know when the other is watching even without the binoculars.

On one hand it was kinda cool. Anna Taylor-Joy is flat out dreamy, so getting to see her be cute and flirty and dance around to the Ramones was kinda cool. Her character sort of has a Black Widow-lite vibe, so don’t get me wrong, she has ample amounts of badassery too.

But on the other hand the love story aspect sort of turned the movie on its side for me. Aspects of it were a little unbelievable, and it was an awkward mesh in to the rest of the sci-fi action stuff. Teller and Taylor-Joy’s chemistry is just ok imo.

I’ll give it a +1 for the music in the film. It’s PG-13 so it doesn’t get real steamy or gory. Action scenes are solid, but you gotta wait half the movie to see them.

    I give it a C

and for good reason, it is not a concert line up, it is just some of the bands that have played there.

    Roger Waters

    Radiohead

    Rush

play there, all were magical experiences
