Can Caleb Downs block big fat guys?

The Browns Board

  • ...or can he catch touchdown passes?   Then drafting him will not improve the Browns chances to win any more games than they did last season because it was the OL & WR positions that kept the team from winning.

Now if we bolster those two positions in FA, then sure, you can add the exceptional defensive player and go back to the OL & WR positions with subsequent draft picks.

A little while ago I saw a clip of Haslem talking to reporters.  He mentioned how he's aware of many people saying that the Browns play ugly football...and he said that We don't want to play ugly.  We're going to make sure that we're not ugly to watch.  So, with that in mind, does anyone really think that Haslam is going to allow Berry to draft a defensive player with the first pick in the draft?  That is just NOT going to happen!  UNLESS, like I said, that we make strides with the OL & WR's in FA.  He hired Monken (offense) and not Schwartz (defense).

Haslam is a marketing type guy.  He likes glitz, shiny, new & improved.  I think that long before he drafts Caleb Downs, he'd trade up to draft Mendoza...the shiny new QB.  And that includes trading away the draft assets required to fix the OL and/or WR's.....because that's just the type of guy he is.

Who does the homeless guy want him to draft? That there is the key.?

And if we add the info in this cut and paste below to the 2 vacancies at OT - there could be as many as 5 new staters needed.  That's what all this waiting until next year gets us to.  Anyway, I got into this in more detail in my earlier post today in the thread titled D.Jeremiah has Browns taking TT Edge Rusher... What BPA advocates conveniently forget is that every year there is usually a run on positions with limited supplies where teams draft players in those positions ahead of their projections.  I have me a feeling there will be an early run on OTs (and LTs in particular).

That last part is scares me more than the Exorcist did in the 70s...

Yup.  There's nothing we can do about it.  The team has to win in spite of it's owner thinking he's smarter than everyone else (sound familiar 🙂 ).  Texas mentioned the homeless guy.  Well, we know (at least I HOPE we know) that Haslam did not draft Manziel because of the homeless guy's endorsement.  But the reality is, he hired and paid Bill Parcells 100k to evaluate the QB's in the draft...and basically Parcells told him, Whatever you do, don't draft Manziel.  But of course, Haslam could not resist the momentary glitz that drafting Manziel afforded him.  Haslam IS the problem...and there's nothing that we can do about it.   🙁

  • Bucky Brooks spoke on Move The Sticks about the Browns’ draft situation, and he made it very clear what needs to be done. He believes No. 6 has to be used on an offensive lineman.

“Pick No. 6 needs to be an offensive lineman. You need to get the best offensive lineman you can get. Twenty-four, maybe we think about wide receiver, but to me, I have to commit the capital to get this offensive line up and going. It was tragic what they trotted out last year in that offensive line. You should never put anybody behind that kind of offensive line. That has to be the priority,” Brooks said.

Brooks added that, given Monken’s background, signs point to O-Line being the first priority. Monken captained some dominant offensive lines at Georgia and clearly made it a massive priority with the Baltimore Ravens to ensure Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry were well-protected.

Cleveland has four starters on the offensive line hitting free agency in Jack Conklin, Joel Bitonio, Ethan Pocic, and Wyatt Teller, with oft-injured left tackle Dawand Jones serving as the only returning starter. Wide receiver is obviously a huge need, but the receiver room doesn’t have actual voids like the line does.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Browns double up and go offensive line with both of their first-round picks. Monken certainly has options, and the fans all can’t wait to see what he and the front office have up their sleeves to fix this offense.

I totally agree with this take on our OL.

'at 24, MAYBE we think about WR'  🙂   in other words, he wants another OLineman at 24.  Again, the only caveat being what gets accomplished during FA.
