Hello
I am a member of this forum. I would like to share this article about India in Africa: an alternative to the Chinese presence. Jean-Joseph Boillot, associate researcher at the Institute of International and Strategic Relations (IRIS), highlights the emergence of Africa as a crucial asset for India in the face of China. Compared to Chinese or French strategies, India’s ambitions are marked by very distinct interventions and approaches. Unlike a central role of the state, Indian companies took a major turn about a decade ago. After setbacks in Western markets, these companies have shifted to and around developing markets, including Africa.

India, although still far behind China in terms of numbers, is today the second largest trading partner of the African continent. Yet his presence remains quite discreet. This relationship relies in part on generations of Indian communities on the continent, as well as NGO activism in areas such as microfinance or the provision of affordable health care. India, through its companies and organizations, has thus begun to play a major role in several economic sectors in Africa, offering alternatives to Chinese dominance while meeting the growing needs of local populations.
