  • PLUTO: CLEVELAND, Ohio – Talking to myself about the Browns’ draft now that a few weeks have passed:

QUESTION: How many of the rookies will start this season?

    ANSWER: Probably one.

Q: One? ONE? I thought they had a great draft.

A: Browns fans have to adjust to a shocking fact of life – they really do have a good team. There are some people who can claim the 11-5 record was fluke thanks to a weak schedule, a few breaks, etc. Let’s say they were 10-6 or even 9-7......

And they're not picking 1st anymore.  We BROWNS fans still have to adjust to that.   🙂

  • I was almost going to take a sip of coffee, and didn't. Sure enough, I laughed out loud at this one:

    Not one of Terry's best...

Getting burned is always possible, but there are degrees. It's not as if we are prohibitive favorites to "win it all".

And nothing burns like 0-16... except maybe 1-31... 🙁

Exactly. I'm not buying into all of the hype about our defense, or any other hype by the media - and some fans, regarding anything.

I'm expecting a winning season and will be disappointed with anything south of 9-7, but it would have to be a total shit show for me to be 'burned', and I believe in Kevin too much for that to be a fear of mine.

The Browns have lots of new faces and they'll have to dodge the injury and COVID opponents, get some lucky bounces and calls, and beat some really good teams just to live up to the lofty hype that has been bestowed to them... none of those are gimmies.

^ So that was a long winded way of saying I'm hoping for the best, but expecting the realistic and will be wearing 100SPF all year.

One could argue that THIS upcoming season might be the best opportunity for the Browns, though...

Tough decisions and salary cap cuts will be in the future, with Baker, Chubbs, Teller, Ward, et al all coming up on free agency.

This upcoming season might be the highwater mark for talent surrounding Baker in his Browns starting QB career.

We all would be because that means the Browns forfeited the 17th game.

The Browns defense should be way more athletic than it was a year ago. The secondary should be light years ahead of the injury-riddled unit for 2020.

But, as I've mentioned numerous times, I'm baffled by all the talk of a very good to great defense, considering IMO the most important thing a defense needs to do in football today is consistently rush the QB, and I just do not see what moves have helped them do this. Clowney is not a pass rusher. Ask Falcons fans if McKinley is, and after their laughter dies down, apologize for asking. The new DTs aren't a force in rushing the passer.

Technically, 9-8 would mean a forfeit. 9-7 suggests that either I was talking about being happy with the Browns 9-7 record before the last game was played, or the 17th game was removed by the NFL if I was actually talking about 9-7 being the Browns' ending record..... and like any good author, I will leave it up to my readers to decide on their own of my true intention.

That would be the improvement made in the secondary.  Again the separation perceived between pass rush and coverage isn't really a separation at all - it's an ecosystem.   Either of them being out of balance will be exploited to great effect by the right offense.

As for Clowney, I suspect his more lean look in that pic posted would clue us to what the coaching staff wants to see from him - a little more speed and bend to the corner.   I won't comment much re: Takk but the possibility of seeing a true 4 edge look isn't out of the question IMHO.  And in that case, you need at least an ok body tying up the interior being able to reliably slant and stunt on your more creative looks.

That's where we disagree, at least somewhat.

I don't think a good secondary can help prop up a poor to mediocre pass rush into a good one. I do think a good pass rush can help prop up a mediocre secondary far more often.

Sure, there are coverage sacks, but I wouldn't want to count on that, especially in today's pass-happy environment where the rules favor WRs over CBs.

Look no further than Revis and Crow or even the Patriots the last few years.
