With Jacoby vs Baker,  it isn't so much about the yardage, it's more about avoiding the costly turnovers.

When your playbook is condensed from a new starter, the turnover margin becomes that much more important.

On defense week 1?  I'm willing to let our corners win their 1 on 1's outside and dare Baker to beat them while the Panthers Oline has to hold up in pass pro.  This means a lot of man and match coverage while we crowd the middle of the field to further give pause.   Quarters, 1 Rat, Match 3.  Really give little space for those 2's and 3's to work with and cause frustration throws.

IDL has to hold up against CMC, Hubbard and Foreman.  Of course, eyes need to be wide looking for the screen game.    I highly doubt Carolina comes out and tries to go bombs away downfield early. Their Oline isn't equipped for that and you rarely settle in a new QB with those types of throws.  Look for the horizontal passing and running game. A lot of 3 and maybe some 5 step work to setup their ball action shots.

Unless Jacoby shows another gear he hasn't previously flashed, it'll likely be a war of attrition.  But because of the Browns superior trench play from the Oline and better running game, I like their chances from 3-7 points.   If it's Browns -2.5, I'd be cool placing a wager.

Of course, there is that dark cloud of opening day history hanging over their heads...

So you are saying the wrong team is the underdog?  I think so too.

I think a therapy session is needed for all…Dwayne Rudd isn’t tossing his helmet, Weeden isnt getting caught under the flag, we aren’t missing a chip shot field goal to avoid a tie or the Scottish Hammer isn’t dropping a snap.  The demons have all been exorcised in every possible way.

Don't forget Myles Garrett will be going up against a rookie LT. A very good rookie, but still a rookie.

His hype team was good the Carolina Preseason Analyst crew (Steve Smith and Co.) were hyping him up and raving about his progress but I saw some rough patches too and I saw him get noticeably beat a couple times.   He’s got my favorite background as an offensive lineman he was a highly decorated high school wrestler.  He should hold his own, but how much does he hold up week 1 going against the next NFL defensive player of the year?

I hear the NFL Network talking heads raving about this explosive Carolina offense…I don’t see it week 1.   The smart game plan is rolling away from Myles, short quick pass game to CMC, maybe catching us off guard up the middle on pass downs with running plays and isolating their TE against our backer not named JOK…all of this is playing within a box and rightfully so this is a young inexperienced line with “meh” talent and they are breaking in QB that has been a Panther for two months.

What most non-local media whiffs on? is not talking enough about the Panthers overall #2 ranked defense of last season..

The Panthers lead the league in net passing yards per game (173.7 yards), they're fourth in the league in third-down percentage allowed (33.1 percent) and tied for fourth in the league in sacks (27).

But they're still somewhat susceptible to teams who want to body them up and run the ball, the way the Cowboys and Vikings did. They rank 12th in the league in rushing yards allowed per game (107.0), numbers that got out of whack in a few games. The Cowboys ran for 245, the Vikings 198, and the Patriots 151. In half of their games, they've held opponents to fewer than 82 rushing yards, and under 50 three times.

DT Derrick Brown left the last preseason game with an oblique injury << good news if* he's limited.. the only major Panthers loss on a good defense from last season? Haason Reddick is now a Eagle

The Browns defense will need good LB/DB play Sunday with McCaffrey catching Baker's underneath dink passes..I'd almost prefer Woods shading a quicker Jacob Phillips/JOK combo to shade McCaffery over the slower lateral movements of A. Walker jr... I'd even bang Emerson into McCaffery if he splits outside.. Our Safety group better come ready to swarm tackle

Admittedly I have seen maybe 2 Panther games last season and I watched games 2 and 3 in the preseason this year.

First, Check down Darnold crippled that offense.

Secondly, Burns moves well…has a great first step and good motor in pass rush.  I’ve seen him quite a few times not maintain a good rush lane and take himself out of run plays.  You run right at guys like that…my Panther friend actually wants the Panthers to do the same to Garrett…Garrett is a completely different player against the run though.

Yeah.  They'd want to keep him from just bolting upfield and around the tackle.

On obvious pass downs sure sneak a draw by play him.  Garrett is a stud against the run and diagnoses well.

Burns vs. Garrett against the run…apples and oranges imo

There’s just one problem: His accuracy is horrendous. That may sound a little harsh, but I can’t think of a more appropriate word to describe it. Brissett just can’t get the ball to go where he wants it to. His poor aim and cavalier decision-making leads to some ugly interceptions, which makes it hard for any coaching staff to trust him."

But the not trusting the QB is something that I don't think is new to this year.   When we're up on teams, Stef does everything he can to take the ball out of Baker's hands.  I know we have a good running game, and it's the thing to do to run the clock down, but Stef seems to take it to another level to keep his QB (Baker) from throwing the ball.  And I'll bet that'll be his plan with Brissette.  Mix things up early on...and if ya can get a lead, milk it for the whole 2nd half.  Run, punt, and play D until either the clock runs out or you are forced to do something else.

It's going to be a great game to watch - so tough to predict, so many questions.

Offhand, I think the Brown's running game won't dominate the game at all. The browns passing game -

who knows - the Panthers' secondary is going to be greatly improved, I think, and the qb facing them isn't known for his accuracy. With new wr's, who knows how that will go.

With the Panther's oline greatly improved, qb greatly improved, with TE's being very, very solid blockers, with

McCaffery healthy sp?, I think it's offense - Panthers advantage, regardless of the outstanding duo at rb.

Defense - the Panthers are very much improved, and they were excellent early on last year vs the run, etc.

Defense - don't know advantage for browns or not. It's complicated. Might be a great game for the browns defense...or not.

The biggest problem I predict is Stefanski for the browns.

The biggest advantage for the Panthers is improvements on offense....

and more importantly, Ben McAdoo. OC. he is far more brilliant that Stefanski, with far more experience.

without turnovers dooming one team or the other, I think the Panthers win based on players added and returning from injury, improved defense, and then McAdoo, I think, makes the major difference for the win.

I hear the NFL Network talking heads raving about this explosive Carolina offense…I don’t see it week 1.

The smart game plan is rolling away from Myles, short quick pass game to CMC, maybe catching us off guard up the middle on pass downs with running plays and isolating their TE against our backer not named JOK

Even though they were 4th against the pass, they ranked tied for 26th with INTs; tied for 15th with sacks; tied for 29th in turnover differential; 18th against the run; and 21st at points allowed.   Looks to me like their offense kept them on the field way too much for fresh legs; and much of that was without their biggest playmaker and scoring weapon.

Our biggest challenge is matching up with McCaffrey in the short passing game; and what the plans to do so creates for others in that offense.  All that said, the Browns definitely have the defensive personnel to handle that consistently enough to win.  Now, we add the running game and ball control offense the Browns will bring to this matchup to win the time of possession battle that will help our defense keep fresh legs.

This will be a hard fought game on both sides; but I fully expect the Browns to win.

I welcome the only Defensive Coordinator to earn a Superbowl Ring in New Orleans while understanding Revenge of the Nerds is a sequel. "Come get some!"

Coincidentally, the best way to matchup with Baker might also align with the best way to slow down McCaffrey - match and zone.  Because the kid has done damage to defenses better than the Browns.  CMC is a special talent, it takes a great individual and collective effort to not let him wreck your defensive designs.  I won't be comfortable just walking young JOK out on the field and saying "track the back".

McAdoo was a member of the coaching staff of the 2010 Packers team that won Super Bowl XLV.[4]

In 2014, McAdoo joined Tom Coughlin’s staff as the offensive coordinator for the New York Giants.[5] In his first season as offensive coordinator, the Giants offense improved from the 28th-highest-scoring offense in 2013 under Kevin Gilbride to 13th in 2014. See? McAdoo joined the giants in 2014 as OC. In only ONE YEAR, he raised the offense to 13th highest scoring offense, FROM where they were the previous season, which was 28th. So, in his SECOND year, the offense went to SIXTH highest scoring offense,

and btw, again, he lost his starting LT, starting WR, and starting TE.

So, going from 28th to sixth in two seasons, was bad?

Yes, he had a bunch of struggles with injuries and player scandals etc etc.

I wouldn't underestimate Ben McAdoo's influence at all - don't bet big money on the browns - or you may end up feeling like "doo doo"

"In 2014, McAdoo joined Tom Coughlin’s staff as the offensive coordinator for the New York Giants.[5] In his first season as offensive coordinator, the Giants offense improved from the 28th-highest-scoring offense in 2013 under Kevin Gilbride to 13th in 2014."

Did you fail to understand. He wasn't TE coach, he was the offensive coordinator.
